Chalk Talk: Tight Ends

We need another TE like David Thomas. If you watch the 4th quarter of the 2006 Rose Bowl, VY passed to him numerous times, down the middle, when our WRs were not open. These clutch catches by Thomas kept the drives going that beat USC. After the catches, the big physical DBs for USC hit him HARD, but Thomas held onto the ball and fought forward for extra yards and first downs to keep the drives going. A truly magnificent performance by a Texas TE...I honestly thought he should have been Co-MVP of the game with VY. Yes, Thomas was THAT good. I want another TE like him at UT. A dependable option when the other receivers are not open. Sure handed, tough and a good blocker on running plays. Just my two cents worth...

Seems like the hybrid tight end are flourishing in college and NFL.    Will we see old school, big set tight ends like Brent Jones and Jay Novacek dominate the position ever again?

One of my pet peeves in football is when an offense telegraphs playcalls based on which players are on the field. To me, a key to the TE position at Texas this year is finding a blend of blocker/pass catcher. To date, most of the guys on the roster excelled at one or the other.

This happened far too often in the last four seasons for Texas.

Our TE recruiting has been subpar at best. Time to turn that around.

My other pet peeve are TEs that seem to avoid sticking their noses into DLs and block.  McFarland?  Swaim can be that guy for UT if he catches the ball like he did in the spring game.  Alamo Bowl...not so much.
