What was up with that call in the 5th game around 14-12? Sure looked like a net violation on TN. Granted our setter clipped it too, but definitely after TN did. Announcers were no help explaining what happened on that point.
The Texas libero handset the ball in front of the attack line which means no hitter (front or back row) can contact the ball while it's completely above the net (which it was) or it's an illegal attack which is what the R1 signaled. I must admit I missed that at first as I was screaming "She's back row!", meaning the setter who is the one who contacted the ball.

Now here's the tricky part, an illegal attack is usually not called until the ball is either completely across the net or is legally blocked. I'm assuming the replay official came to the conclusion that the ball was completely across the net before the Tennesse player made contact with the net. You're correct, our player did contact the net but the play was already dead thus no violation.

Pretty sure he completed 75% and 200+ yds passing in that game. David Thomas caught many drive extending 3rd and long passes iirc. VY was a good passer, his legs made him a deadly passer.

Absolutely, he passed well in that game. But he won it with his legs. Both of the last two TDs VY was back to pass and chose to use his legs instead.

The only point being, he was way beyond the norm running the football hence the idea that he could run the wishbone like no other.

Seriously, maybe Colt would have been the best wishbone QB ever...

I never meant this to devolve into a "this guy is better than that guy" argument. I only wanted to point out that Street deserved to be in the conversation.

They won it. The defense held on 4th & 2.

As he should

30-40 for 267 and 200 yds rushing. Pretty good game. But on that last drive to win there was one pass VY would have like to have had back. He didn't pass again. It was almost intercepted.

always wondered if that last play was planned or if VY just improvised

Actually, the pass you're thinking about came on the 2nd to last drive that made the score 38-33 USC. He made several pass attempts and completions on the rest of that drive and the winning one.

The last play on 4th & 5 was the same play they ran before on 3rd & 5 that was an incompletion to Sweed. It was a run/pass option and he chose the right option the second time! ;) 🤘

I'm not so sure about that. Remember that Street replaced Super Bill Bradley as quarterback. Bradley was an incredible athlete, but couldn't move the ball well in the Wishbone or the previous offense. DKR pulled Bradley for Street and the rest is history.
The story goes Bill's hands were too small. Had troubles with hand offs etc.

Huh? I have no idea what you're talking about but had a question. :)

If front or back row can't contact the ball, then who can contact it?

Both can contact it however some part of the ball has to be below the net if they hit it to the other side. Good question
