Following the 49-21 drubbing the No. 7 Texas Longhorns (12-1, 8-1) gave the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Big 12 Championship on Saturday, the wait began. The College Football Playoff Committee had work to do and decisions to be made in sorting out what the final peformances in conference championship games meant for the Top 8 teams that played.

Alabama defeated top-ranked Georgia. Michigan handled the Iowa Hawkeyes and Washington held on to beat Oregon on Friday night. The Florida State Seminoles struggled, but stayed undefeated on the season after beating the Louisville Cardinals.

Only four teams get in, but who?

Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns learned their fate on Sunday morning and that fate includes their first appearance in the College Football Playoff.

Texas lost a lone game to Oklahoma, but at the end of the day, the win over Nick Saban and Alabama in Tuscaloosa in Week 2 carried enough weight for the CFP Committee to put the Longhorns in the Top 4. The Longhorns join Michigan (#1, 13-0), Washington (#2, 13-0) and Alabama (#4, 12-1) as the College Football Playoff teams this season. Undefeated Florida State rang in at #5 with Georgia holding the sixth spot.

Texas, the third seed, will have a rematch of last year’s Alamo Bowl and will face the Washington Huskies in the Sugar Bowl on January 1 at 7:45 PM. Should the Longhorns win, they would advance to the national championship game and play the winner of Michigan – Alabama.

I think probably matchup better against Michigan than Washington. Good thing we are peaking at the right time.
I told my brother the same thing. I’d rather play a traditional Run first team with this defense then pass happy for the secondary. Can’t wait to watch

I understand the match-up sentiment but let's not forget the L we took last year. I have to think this team wants some get back. PLUS Sark getting the chance to put it on the team that gave him his head coaching start. I expect us to put it on Washington. And a Texas/Alabama rematch in the national championship

Hook ‘em!

If Sark keeps our offense as dynamic as it is, we can keep up with Washington’s offensive power. Their offense as explosive as ours but our D much better (except secondary where we are weak).

It will be a high scoring affair!

A month to get Quinn, Baxter and X fully healthy while PK dials up something new for Penix. I trust this staff with time to prepare.

I prefer to play and beat Michigan. That would mean we played and beat the other 3 playoff finalists in the same season.

our Coach/analyst Paul Chryst knows Michigan as well as anyone around Im sure he is planning and scheming for them
Alabama is much improved over the team we played in Tuscaloosa, they will have to spy Millroe on every play
Washington is improved over the team that beat us but there is a ton of film on them, Coach PK has to come up with something different or Penix will tear us a new one, IMO the way to beat the Huskies is to keep Penix off the field, that means we need long time consuming drives, with the new clock rules the number of possession is much less per game

if the games were next week nobody wants any part of Texas or Alabama

a month from now with time to heal and scheme who knows, they will tell you they are planning for the scheduled game but any staff worth its salary is prepping for two games in less than two weeks of each other

Texas could use the time to heal up some hurts, but they are clicking right now especially on offense and I dont know how Sark and staff keep that edge, you're only allowed I think 20 practices so you want them to peak again on NY2024, you also pray to God that nobody does anything stupid in New Orleans to get themselves kicked off the team

I knew the committee didn’t have the cajones to keep the SEC out of the CFP…I’m just glad they screwed FSU and not the Horns.

That being said, what a great season! Now I have a couple of questions: Why not us? Why not now?

Hook ‘Em!!

Several weeks ago I didn't think we were ready to compete in the CFP due to inconsistency, but the team has peaked these past few games. Every team has a relative weakness, but this team is as complete as there is. There's no reason for them to be afraid of any other team in the playoff, so I hope they believe they can't win it all because they can.

the CFP isn't really about who is better, its who matches up better

I think this team isn’t close to scared… of anyone. They have an attitude. How they talk shit after games and keep receipts is good to see. Love the confidence of this locke room

We do not match up well with Washington. They sling the ball all over, all game. Our secondary is our weakness.

Sark needs to spend the next month getting his players healthy and getting the secondary up to snuff or this won't be much of a game.
