All this being said, UTEP is going to be a pretty good team this year.  Golding will have them fighting hard every single game.  Would not be surprised to see them hovering around 20 wins and a NCAA tournament bid. The PG is a little shaky and they need better outside shooting, but they will outwork you

First game of the season. Beard is still figuring out his rotations and the players are going to take a little time to gel with the new additions. Most importantly, they didn’t panic when it got close in the second half and opened up the lead to end the game.

I agree with longhorn_mig that when Hunter, Carr, and Rice were on the floor together the offense had better spacing and flow to it. Those 3 did score 44 of the 72 points.

Didn't like how Disu and Bishop played defense in the lane or whoever UTEP put on the blocks, but it was the 1st game.  Also, didn't like the 4 of 14 3pt shooting.

Not certain how to take the technicals on flops just yet. Glad it was put in, but seems to slow or stop fast breaks a couple of times.

One more game before the Zags come calling.

Need to fix the low block defense and do a better job of defensive rebounding by the time conference play starts.

Our outside shooting is pathetic. Wide open after wide open clanks off the rim.

4-14 in the opening game, started 0-14 tonight, ended 3-22 and two of those were by walk-ons.

9-19 on FTs too.

24 offensive rebounds on 33 misses! So the terrible 3 pt shooting doesn't hurt when you get the ball back off the rim.

The offensive rebounding numbers are a against a terrible team.  Those wont work against Gonzaga.

I’ve watched 2 games now and here are a few random observations for what they’re worth (probably not much):

This team is better than last years addition.  And if it’s too early to make that claim - then they are MUCH more entertaining to watch.  Much more athletic and the pace is faster.

Defense is tremendous.  The effort is something to behold.  Cunningham and Bishop give “hustle” a new definition.

Carr looks more comfortable and is a better player at 2.  His ability to drive… I didn’t realize last year.  He has a crossover and step-back that are jaw dropping.

Hunter is already the team leader and arguably the best player.   He brings athleticism that last years team badly needed.

The two five star freshman are going to be great.  Mitchell will probably be 1 and done on athletically ability alone.  He’s a freak.  Morris shows a lot of potential as well.  These two plus Hunter transformed our team athletically.

The Achilles heal is shooting.  Just like it has been for the last 7 years, this team can’t shoot from the outside.  As great as Mitchell is, I believe he was 0-4 from the FT line at one point against Houston Christian.  It’s hard to win basketball games (especially todays game) if you cannot shoot 3’s.  And if key players can’t hit free throws, this combination will kill you.  This team certainly can’t hit 3s - it appears.  We will be in most games because of defense… but shooting will hurt us against good teams.

I think having Hunter, a real PG, has generally unlocked this team. As many have already said, the shooting from long range is a big concern, followed by the FT shooting. Unfortunately, we need that issue figured out quick, because we'll need an improvement in both against Gonzaga.

I agree on Hunter unlocking this team.  The one thing about 3 pt. shooting, I disagree with Lance Blanks saying "Carr has/is the better shooter".  Ii believe that belongs to Rice and then Morris, but both seem to not wanting to settle for just 3 pt shots. This is something different than we have seen in years past. The fact that Carr was 0 for 5 and Hunter was 0 for  or something like that says Beard doesn't want them to settle for bad shots.  Hopefully, the freshmen and others can get closer to the 1st game of 22 of 29 FTs or better.

Did see some of the MSU vs. ZAGS game on ESPN on Friday night, we need to swarm and cause the Zags to take some bad shots and them space them apart and make that Timme dude have to guard in space. Then run, run, run till they can't run no more.

Watching the game and the 3 pt shots, most of the balls looked good and the shots were very close. I think we do get more to drop soon. I don't think that will be a strength of the team but I do think we will see it improve.

Totally agree. Rice is the superior shooter. He’s also the best free throw shooter, evidenced by him always taking the free throws on techs.

I watched most of the Gonzaga game. They’re definitely beatable, but we have to have a better shooting night from distance.
