GAME THREAD: Texas Longhorns @ West Virginia Mountaineers

I just didn’t like Herman as the Texas coach.  Maybe 4-8 was overstating the point.
I didnt either.  He was childish and toxic and was in the spotlight.  Embarrassing

To be clear where.  What is the talent you speak of besides Worthy and Bijan?

OL?  DL?  LB?  DB?  QB?
We’re not talented... but... I’d say we’re more talented than Kansas.  I don’t think we’re 4 win bad talent-wise.

going into the year I thought DL was the strength of the team.  They are terrible.  Ash couldn’t stop gushing about Collin’s talent.  I think he called him the most talented DL he’d ever coached.  Coburn, Sweat, Broughton, Jones... I thought had the makings of a really good DL.  Murphy is also a pleasant surprise too.  Not only is our interior DL not a strength, they are non-existent in the second half / fourth quarter.

Someone else posted this but its worth another post

Charlie Strong told me, when he was the head coach at Texas, he wasn't fired yet,” Herbstreit said. “He just got there, was getting a lot of heat. He said, 'this is a tough job because on one hand, they want me to recruit a lot of these five-stars in this state, but I don't think they're great players. But there's such immense pressure to recruit this player out of this area or this player because they're five stars. And if you don't recruit those players, they're going to crush you because you didn't land that recruit. And if you do bring them in, you're deep down I don't know if this guy is a dog.' ... Sark knew this before he went. In fact, he and I had a conversation when his name was in there. I called him and I said, 'are you going to take this?' He said, 'yeah I think I'm gonna.' And I said, 'you know the deal there right.' He goes 'oh yeah, before I even commit, I'm going to talk to them about how I’m going to have to do this. It’s going to be really hard to do this the right way. And as long as you’re going to support me through this, we’re going to do this. It’s not going to be pretty.

“In order to change the culture there that has been struggling since 2010, even the last couple of years with Mack (Brown). Something got into this program that’s like a virus, and it’s permeated itself for over a decade now. So to get it done right, you can’t put a Band-Aid on this problem and a Band-Aid over there and expect it to be ‘look we’re 8-4, everything’s fine over here.’ Nope. It’s almost like a decayed tooth. You gotta really go to work on that thing.”

I agree with the Kansas part but you know Aranda team was 11-3 when Rhule left for the NFL and Aranda went 2-7 with much more talent.  How is this any different

Well give us your brilliant insight buddy.  Its the coaches gotcha.  So whats next hoss?  Enlighten the entire longhorn nation with your fire these coaches they all suck.  Its entertaining
I have, and it’s not my brilliance.  It’s pretty obvious from just watching the games.  Just go back and read some of my responses in this thread.  The coaches were stubborn and unwilling to adapt.  8-4 was a real possibility this season

OL got worse after Oakfor was hurt, same with DL when Jones went down.

2017     Rhule     1–11     1–8     9th
2018     Rhule     7–6     4–5     6th     W Texas
2019     Rhule     11–3     8–1     T-1st     L Sugar     12     13

2020     Aranda     2-7     2-7     9th

Atleast Rhule had an excuse especially from Briles rape scandal 2 years before he started.

Needless to say he rebuilt that program.  Arandas record would have been worse if they had played all the games during the covid outbreak.

In 3 years we all will know who is right.  Until then people have a right to draw their own conclusions and wait for time to prove them right or wrong.
Coaches can change in 3 years.  The ones that do keep their jobs.  The ones that can’t adapt enough to sustain their position and building the program and it’s future are fired and move on to their next chapter.  Sark can adapt, and build a monster at Texas.  This season has not been an indication he can, but next year may be a different story.  I don’t want to see #AllGasNoBrakes tied to Texas football for a while though

I’m not too well versed on Baylor football.  I think they had a lot of COVID hold outs?? But I get it... previous years record doesn’t dictate what the team is the ensuing year.  I don’t completely disagree with what you’re saying.  I just didn’t expect coach K to make Manny Diaz look like Buddy Ryan.

How many 5 star recruits did Charlie strong land while at Texas?  I’ll give you a hint, it’s less than 2
OK on the 5 stars....he still had 2 top 10 classes other than his transition year.  So I dont see your point.  if you have an issue with Strongs statements take it up with him.  I am just relaying the information

Charlie saying he was supposed to recruit certain 5stars due to donors telling him what to do and that was the reason he failed at Texas?!?!  That is laughable.  Strong landed just one 5* in his 3 years.  Recruiting didn’t lead to his dismissal.  He was a coaching blunder that should’ve never even been given consideration to be hired at Texas.  Look at how he killed what success USF had.  Red McCombs said it best, he’s a good DC.

herman recruited well also, until he started rubbing recruits the wrong way.

To be clear I was not excited about PK hire.  I still do not like the hire but it is what it is.  You can call it what you want but this team has not been the same since the ou and osu loss.  Both of those games were 1-3 plays away from being 2-0 instead of 0-2.  The team has not played anywhere close since then.

I agree on Charlie he was in over his head.  His facial expressions after speechless losses will go down in history.  He still recruited well.  His transition class was still #17, then #10 and then #7.  Thats hardly a failure in recruiting.  I think he was trying to point out those werent his type of players.  "dogs" I believe he referred to his type of player

I never like the Strong hire but loved the Herman hire.  Wasnt onboard with the Sark hire at first but tired of changing coaches.  Just fix the team whether it takes 2-3 years or not.  otherwise we will be going through this bullshit again and again and again

Your best post today.  PK had a great resume, but sometimes you don’t get to see what a coach can do unless he sees change.  I believe his system would fare better if he had the type talent needed to employ it.  Fitting square pegs into round holes don’t work though.  If he doesn’t have the right kind of pegs, he should adapt to use the ones he has.  He wasn’t able to do such.  And his back end was left hung out to dry.  Soft cushion, poor safety help and no pressure up front killed Texas defensively.

i wasnt real excited especially after they decided to let Chris Ash go.  After seeing the defensive progress with the talent on hand it only made sense to me for him to be asked to stay.  Sark didn’t like him so here we sit, 4-7, poor scheme for the personnel, lack of adjustment
