SignUp Now!When I was in college after I got out of the Marines I was working the overnight shift at a convenience store out in the country. Still had a year to go until I graduated. A convenience store on the other side of town was robbed at gunpoint. I quit the next day. That store did end up getting robbed. I didn’t want to risk my future for minimum wage. High school football players don’t even make minimum wage. So what are they risking their future for. Glory days pass you by. I served in the first Gulf war. I don’t consider my self a coward because I didn’t want to work at the convenience store.Yes, it is fear of being hurt physically. We can know this is true because as you just said, the fear of ending a career, which is nothing more than fear of injury (which would end that career).
If the game means nothing to him, why play him at all?
You're advocating a young person make decisions based on fear and that high school football is meaningless.
If you're not invested in what you're doing, just take a seat because others are.
Tell me, how often is an athlete targeted by another team and end up being injured so bad it cost him his career? I'll wait while you have to look that up.
I am a small bueiness owner which employs teams of people to do project. When one guy sits out, no matter how good he is, the others get resentful about it. It creates a negative atmosphere and leads to others also to sit out. It's a cancer I sometimes have to deal with.
Because such a small percentage of players end up becoming stars. You're treating them like they're all stars. They're not. Why would you pay high school athletes? Its an OPPORTUNITY for them, not a job. They can take advantage of the opportunity, or skip out on their team whenever it suits them. When I was in college after I got out of the Marines I was working the overnight shift at a convenience store out in the country. I mean think about this. Top DLinemen out of Louisiana, Mississippi, and now Alabama. Sark is building a team like he has seen Saban do it with huge dominate lines.Man we pulled one from Alabama. Sark is building an awesome DL class. I’m trying to not drink the Kool-Aid but dang I’m getting close. We hammer Arkansas this weekend and all bets are off ??
????
It is about fear. Fear of losing money. What's ridiculous about it? Stewart's a highly recruited athlete and will get the pick of his colleges. We have no idea why he won't play just that he isn't. He realizes he could get hurt and why chance losing NIL because of some HS game. Or maybe he has the flu. Regardless, it won't hurt his chances of getting that coveted scholarship at the next level.
There was no NIL when you were in HS so it's a different situation these days.
FYI, players do skip games because of the NFL.
It has nothing to do with fear, it's all about the benjamins.
This D-line recruiting haul is filthy. I hope we can keep all of them.I mean think about this. Top DLinemen out of Louisiana, Mississippi, and now Alabama. Sark is building a team like he has seen Saban do it with huge dominate lines.
I feel good about the Horns keeping Tapp, Finkley, Swanson and Derrick Brown. I could see Bledsoe, Ross and Bryant looking around (particularly Ross and Bryant for some reason). I just think Finkley is one of those that once he commits that is it. Tapp seemed to really like Texas all along. As far as A. Jones, i dont know because I think he is a little more versatile and can shuffle around. Im just in awe of this recruiting class. This D-line recruiting haul is filthy. I hope we can keep all of them.
Old school almost sounds like socialism to me. The high school kids owes his services to the collective. As a matter of fact I bet there are a bunch of kids at school, not only players, that do indeed resent him. These guys are more gifted in sports. How about the guys who are more gifted academically? Do we say they owe that to the school? But you are saying kids owe their athletic talents to the school. I’m glad I live in a country where you can decide you don’t want to play.It is about fear. Fear of losing money.
This concept is so alien to me especially in the high school ranks. I'm old school and damn proud of it. I would not want a team mate like that. I would resent him still being a part of the team to use the facilities to better only himself.

Football is all fleeting glory. I often wonder why anyone still plays it at least after high school. Junior Seau, Tommy Nobis, the list can go on and on…. the price they pay. They don’t owe me that.

OK. I hear ya. No argument there. The calculation he and others made, money wins.

You don’t understand it I guess. There’s more to life than thinking about your future when you’re 15-18 years old. Kids should enjoy life and live in the moment and enjoy the times they have with their friends they grew up with. What are they risking when they go to the after game bonfire, get drunk and drive home? Are they thinking about their future then? Or just when they decide to walk away from their commitment to their teammates? Nobody is guaranteed tomorrow and sometimes bad things happen. IF you play cautious, that’s when you get hurt. Playing in fear gets you hurt worse than going out there being the aggressor. So what when they get to college? Sit out their soph and junior year because mcshay and kiper say they’re prolly gonna be a first round pick? When does the pussification of America end? Strap the pads on and play. When I was in college after I got out of the Marines I was working the overnight shift at a convenience store out in the country. Still had a year to go until I graduated. Here we go, inserting politics into sports, again. Back in the day there was no economic consideration so socialism wasn't applicable. It was all about being a team and succeeding as a team. I'm a gun owner, conservative and a Christian and yet you sound farther right than me. How can that be since you seemed pretty liberal about the situation to begin with.Old school almost sounds like socialism to me. The high school kids owes his services to the collective. I do understand. I played. It’s their choice. I look at what happened to Tommy Nobis, Junior Seau, and a bunch of others and realize the risk they take. You guys seem to think they owe that to us. Those two players you referenced would never have backed down knowing the risk. I never thought they owed anything but I was thankful they played for the reasons they did.I do understand. I played.
