SignUp Now!I would guess that a lot of the reservations have to do with the lack of success by the Orlando version. Other schools and Dcs have had more sustained success that he did with a 3 man front. Others like myself favor a 4 man front for a variety of reasons. Ultimately, it depends on the design, personnel, and scheming. We have also recruited heavily toward a 4-2-5 over the last 12-18 months. We will need more linebackers and hybrid types for the 3-3-5 to be successful in my opinion. Why not? And I'm asking from a position of ignorance because I really don't know the pro/cons of running this defense...
IT had a source tell them he would be up for coaching defense in college again, but he should have that same opportunity in the NFL.Former Falcons HC and Leigion of Boom DC Dan Quinn is emerging as a candidate per Chip and Burton. Seems legit to me.
Sark knows the DC is his most important hire, and also his biggest blind spot as an offensive minded HC.While I was first skeptical on the Ash hiring that changed once the defense started improving. Sometimes its not about making every play but rather how the defense looks with regards to effort and playing together as a complete unit. Under Ash there was no doubt that we were getting better defensively. I only hope that if we have another DC come in we can keep moving in the right direction.
The more that we hear of possible DC names cropping up the less likely it is that Ash will be retained, IMO. If Sark was comfortable with Ash remaining I don't think we would be extending so many offers. If true Muchamp said no, Odom said no. Apparently Sark wants to start fresh on the defensive side of the ball and possible feels Ash is not the guy. I suspect that Sark does not feel that Ash can run the type of defense that he prefers and that is part of the reason why he is still trying to acquire someone else.
I don’t like the 3-3-5 because the 3 man front is easier to run on. Also creates larger lanes for a mobile QB to scramble. Why not? And I'm asking from a position of ignorance because I really don't know the pro/cons of running this defense...
Thanks for your response Huskie1. In a 4-2-5, generally what's the responsibility of the 4? I assume to engage the OL and allow the 2 linebackers to roam free can cause havoc? In this alignment are we expecting our DL to cause pressure without needing to dial up blitzes?I don’t like the 3-3-5 because the 3 man front is easier to run on. You have to blitz someone every time to create pressure. Proponents will say they can send multiple blitzes and confuse the offense and this is true....sometimes.
I coached a 4-2-5 and prefer it.
I just haven’t seen the 3-3-5 run well many places. West Virginia does, Cincinnati does, to name a couple. We did not under Orlando.
No scheme is perfect however. There’s strengths and weaknesses to all.
No doubt he will rise and fall with the DC he chooses. So yes, he is being methodical. I don't know all of the the details but people are saying Sark wants to run 3-3-5. Just don't know if that is Ash's wheel house. I think he is married to the defense he is currently running. The reaching out to so many for the DC position definitely gives ark cover and shows he is doing his due diligence. At this point I just feel that Sark is moving in a different direction with the DC. The hire is so important I think he wants to make his own hire instead of taking someone that was hired by TH. Time will tell. We don't know anything for sure whether keeping Ash would be best or hiring Arnett....who really knows for certain? No one. That is why you hire a head coach and let him make the choice and then live with the consequences.Sark knows the DC is his most important hire, and also his biggest blind spot as an offensive minded HC.
He's also being careful not to repeat the mistakes of Herman. Herman was told to hire the best available and use the blank check provided. Instead Herman went with comfort hires. Maybe he thought they were the best available, but if you don't actually beat the bushes people won't believe you.
Sark may be worried (and rightfully so) that if he simply sticks with Ash without a search the perception will be he didn't look hard enough... especially if the defense struggles. So he may like Ash but still need to talk with others just to make sure and prove to everyone that he did a proper search.
Either way, it's a smart move on his part. A little extra time here is worth reassuring both himself, and the fanbase, that the best guys were tracked down.
As far as pass rush, ideally you eat up the C-G with the nose, leaving the 3 technique and the two outside one on one. We ran twists and slants too when needed. Thanks for your response Huskie1. Found it.
After resigning as Alabama's defensive line coach on Friday, Bo Davis is reportedly being investigated by the NCAA for potential recruiting violations.
Per Matt Zenitz of AL.com, Davis has been "accused of visiting multiple out-of-state recruits during a period when coaches aren't allowed any contact with recruits."
Zenitz noted the NCAA contacted Alabama's compliance office, at which point Davis was "questioned and caught being dishonest before eventually resigning" on Friday.
At the time of Davis' resignation, Alabama head football coach Nick Saban issued a statement without providing details, per Zenitz: "Bo Davis has submitted his letter of resignation. We appreciate all the contributions he made to the program and wish him and his family the very best in the future."
I agree is seems to be counterintuitive unless Sark is coordinating and consulting with someone that he has already be chosen to be DC but has not announced.I'm kind of confused. You would think a DC has already been chosen, right? I mean, shouldn't the DC have a say on guys a part of that staff?
