SCHOOLS WITH THE BEST CLASSES ON AVERAGE OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS

Trending up

Texas: There have been some frustrating setbacks for Tom Herman on the field since he arrived in Austin, but his impact on the recruiting trail has reversed what had become a troubling trend for one of the nation's blue blood college football programs. Back-to-back top-three classes in the 2018 and 2019 cycles were followed by a top-10 finish in 2020 after seeing the program slide into the mid-teens in the rankings from 2013-17. If you're looking for reasons to get excited about the Longhorns in 2020, consider that some key players from those top-three classes are now going to be the leaders in Austin as Herman tries to engineer a return to the Big 12 Championship Game.

No doubt. We should be better across the board. I think for the first time in a while we’ll be underrated going into the season. We should be playing with a chip on our shoulder. 2020 will be better than any THC team thus far.

CAN TEXAS, A&M CONTINUE TO RECRUIT AT TOP 10 LEVELS?

Texas A&M and Texas have posted back-to-back top 10 classes. This is despite the Aggies carrying a combined 17-9 record and the Longhorns sitting at 18-9. Those records aren’t bad. They’re also well below the level of the other programs that consistently challenge for top five classes. Thus, it’s worth wondering if that recruiting rate is sustainable. It’s an easy yes if those Lone Star State programs manage to win. Texas inked a quintet of top five classes from 2010-19 despite winning zero conference championships. Imagine what's possible if the Longhorns actually start winning big again. Texas A&M, for its part, couples elite recruiter Jimbo Fisher with some of the best facilities in the country and the draw of the SEC. Winning would guarantee bountiful classes in College Station.

"This is a critical year for both programs to continue to recruit at a top-10 level. You could set your watch by Jimbo Fisher bringing in top 5 classes at Florida State and Tom Herman has proven he’s capable," Simmons said. "But if both teams can’t take a step forward this fall, the rhetoric starts to ring hollow. Breakthrough seasons could blow the roof off of recruiting expectations but more of mediocrity sinks the floor in the same way."

Let's harp on that last point: Losing is where things get interesting. Tom Herman, like Fisher, is an outstanding recruiter. But how long can the Longhorns keep recruiting well without wins? History shows it’ll stop after two or three sub-par seasons or once the “you have a chance to build something” sell wears off. Texas signed three straight top five classes from 2010-12 following its 2009 title game appearance. Mack Brown’s final class in 2013 finished 17th. Charlie Strong signed a top 10 class his first full cycle. The class he left Tom Herman in 2017 ended up finishing 25th. Kevin Sumlin inked a top five class in 2014 after Johnny Manziel mania. His final three classes averaged at 14th nationally after three consecutive 8-5 seasons.

The short of it: Texas and Texas A&M will generally recruit top 15 classes no mater what. But selling hope only lasts for so long in the race to sign top five groups.

Always wongered about this TE recruit a few inches short  and a lot of pounds light. Maybe the coaches will check out Grandview or Argyle.

Grandview kid is probably aggy bound since they took his JUCO brother.  I would expect the 2nd TE to be one of the two we offered a few weeks ago in Elijah Arroyo and Landon King.
