Longhorn News/Discussion (Non-Recruiting)

Yea, but who is he telling to shut up? Sounds like the fans to me. Hope I misinterpreted that.
Yea he is talking about the players, as in they need to quit talking about being so great and just have the fans come to the games and prove it to em.

I watched the game. I saw no improvement over Maryland 2017. I have been watching since 1958.
I’ve been watching since 1974 and I honestly don’t think I have ever felt this much discouragement / apathy.   Here’s a couple of things I heard on the radio yesterday:

1.  In the past 30 years Texas has ended the season outside the top 25 as many times as they have been in the top 25.

2.  Two conference championships in the last 20 seasons.

Yet, for some reason I hold onto this image I had in the 70s / early 80s that we are this juggernaut and getting back to a football power is right around the corner?

I guess maybe reality is setting in.... data tells me mediocrity is the “new normal.”  I’ve got a plethora of theories as to why, but the bottom line is that my expectations are antiquated.

I agree with you Dee. I have been watching since 1964 and was just used to the years with Coach Royal running out a juggernaut every year. I know recruiting has changed and the game has changed, so it's not the way it used too be. Years ago, you hardly ever saw a Texas kid go out of state to play football, but now they will go across the country to play and not bat an eye. So if kids are leaving more than they use too and then the kids that are left get divided up among several Texas programs, you are not going to compete for the championship like that. Saban, Meyers, Dabo, and many more recruit nation wide. Mack didn't do that and Strong didn't do that. Luckily I think Herman realizes that if I am going to compete at the highest level, I have to go nation wide as well. He's getting good recruits and will continue to get good recruits. I think we will see a turn in on the field product (wins)...................I hope this year. I can't explain what happened Saturday............I am not a mensa member. I hope I am correct that we will see it though. Everything is in place that wasn't before. Best AD in the country, facilities upgrade, good coach..............the pieces are there. There hardest thing in the world is patience...............which I have very little of, but I still think it is coming.

Oooooooooooooooooooooooo

Good thoughts... Saban, Dabo and Meyers dominate their own states in recruiting though.....

I agree with you Dee. I have been watching since 1964 and was just used to the years with Coach Royal running out a juggernaut every year.
But Royal didn't run out a juggernaut every year. There were some pretty average years mixed in with great ones as even Royal sometimes had to figure out how to adjust and coach differently.

The end of the Mack era (after shifting in 2010) and then Strong set this program back a long way, primarily in the OL and the types of guys they recruited. Rebuilding an OL can take years even when right program is put in place. And if you don't have an OL you may as well not have anything.

Herman biggest issue right now is trying to run an offense where he expects his OL to be better than it is. It obviously frustrates him, as they keep trying to run the ball as if they can push people around. They gameplan around it, and as a result they don't get creative which is what teams with average OL must do in order to move the ball.

Combine that with not having a QB that's accurate enough on the short to mid throws to effectively make use of short passing plays that are substitutes for running plays, and you end up with what we still have - a feast or famine offense.

Herman can figure this out, but if he insists on being stubborn like Mack (who was so sure Mack's Truck would run over the Big 12) then it won't go well. However Herman seems more practical than this and will adjust.

Hope you are right.

They are the equivalent of Baylor in the Big 12. Having optimism about the rest of the season is admirable but illogical. Herman and this team have to earn our trust back after that nonsense on Saturday.
Maryland would clobber BU easily.  Doesn't make last Saturday or my massive level of deflation and disappointment from the game disappear, but I do agree Herman/Staff/Team have to earn back our trust.  Stupid turnovers at the end of close games is not the MO I hoped to see from this program.

Anyone see Tristan Nickelson Twitter? He was actually communicating with a bunch of fans about a coaching change or QB change. Was a good read from a players perspective

dont know if you'll be able to read comments unless you have a twitter

Please tell me I'm wrong regarding this tidbit from Tim Beck in yesterday's media availability. But this sounded anything but good. I can't imagine that's how the really good teams manage their play calling. But I could be wrong.

Tim Beck on Herman being involved in the play calling during the Maryland game and how it all works:

“I thought it was great. We communicate things I see up there to him. Things that this might be good right here, or hey, what about this? So does he. He sees the same things. One thing that he has that I don’t is got the feel of them. He can look in their eyes and say, ‘Hey, we’re going to run it here because I can tell the o-line is ready. We’re going to mash them right here. Let's do this. I think it was a great adjustment. It was awesome. We kind of do that anyway. It’s always been that way. You get Drew (Mehringer) and Derek (Warehime). Herb (Hand) is going to say, ‘Run the power here.’ Okay, we’re going to run power. We’re kind of all in that together. As I mentioned before, we game plan, we have a list – here’s third down, here’s what we’re going to call. That’s what we kind of go off of.”

He’s absolutely talking about the players/team. Not sure how you figured he was talking to fans there.
The players aren't talking, at least not publicly, but the fans are. Especially on social media. That's how I arrived there.
