2018 Recruiting Board/Thread

FWIW, one mock draft has Hill going in the first round to the Dallas
That was Matt Miller from BR who is a bit of a Texas homer. Going that high on year of production seems very unlikely to me.

And this is a mock Draft prior to draft season. Take them with a grain of salt.

I think Malik and Connor are the most likely of the bunch. Connor is the only one who has strung together consecutive seasons of high level production, but Malik will probably blow up the combine and his pro day from a testing standpoint and will benefit from that.

With Hill and Elliott, both have played at a high level this year, but both will face questions about being one year wonders and in Hill’s case off the field stuff. I think if you are looking for hope in guys coming back these guys are probably the best bets.

If all four opt to leave that obviously would be hard to stomach, but I bet we see at least one stay in school.
I hope all 4 come back.

If Deshon wins Thorpe award it may entice him more.  I think all these guys will tear up the combines.

I hope they all come back though I havent watched NFL since the Emmitt Smith days anyways

Yea thats why I put "FWIW"

It just got me thinking how depleted we could potentially be after this year if we lost all 4 plus Poona.

That scares the crap out of me.   :(

A poster on another board that is close to Malik said he is gone after the season. Cannot blame him.. Get paid.

Did he mention if he just doesn't want to be at Texas anymore or if he's just ready for the NFL?

Always thought malik would be likely to stick all four years. Kinda the guy that was supposed to bring Texas back.

@Daniel Seahorn,

Of these current players which do you expect to declare for the NFL draft?

  1. Conner Williams
  2. Malik Jefferson
  3. DeShon Elliott
  4. Holton Hill
Those could be some big voids next year.  Your thoughts?  I could see us losing all four unfortunately
They are all gone, unfortunately.

Can't blame him he knows he's 1-2 round player he can take care of his mom whichever I believe is his main priority outside the lines.

This has been a slow week.  Reminds me of off season.

We have another shot at a top 10 team this week and to impress potential recruits and its like ...../crickets

It's the calm before the burnt orange storm.

I don't think any of them go in the first two rounds.  Third round is likely the earliest and that's still worth it.  Malik is having a season and showing leadership that leads to folks taking notice and he's on pace to graduate as a Junior.   Hill, should stay, doubt he does.   Williams to me is all pending whether or not he can get back on the field this year and prove he's ready to roll to boost his draft stock.  As for the Joker, if he breaks Earl Thomas record...go play ball and get paid son.  Only problem, his success is more a product of the system than anything else, congrats for being in the right place at the right time.  All of these kids would sky rocket up drafting boards if they returned, but injury is the worst fear.

They have players to fill those voids, though they are going to be thin at linebacker if we miss out on 2018 kids.

We will miss Williams, regardless.

Gary Johnson, Anthony Wheeler, and Ed Freeman give us three legit options for our two backers next year. After that I literally have no idea who plays those positions

Wheeler looks like he's running with concrete on his feet....  Gary Johnson jumps into Jefferson's role and helps his own draft stock next season.

Freeman will be a SR next season, Townsend will be a JR, Boyd will be a SOPH and Bimage will either be a RSF or SOPH (I think he has played).

Without including early exits, we lose: WR Foreman, Joe and Leonard, TE Moore and Beck, OL Nickelson, DE Hughes, DT Ford, CB Davis and S Hall.

10 schollys, 1 true starter?

Possible exits, LT Williams, LB Jefferson, CB Hill and S Elliott.

Plus natural attrition that's due to occur.

Overshown said he will ink in December, that kid may never see safety and end up as a hybrid LB at 6'4" busting 200.

TE Beck will most likely get a medical redshirt for this year.

All 4 could help their stock by staying another year but Conner would benefit the most. Playing a high value NFL position (QB, DE, OT) inherently brings a better draft position and I think coming off his injury will push him out of the first two rounds. If he was healthy I believe goes in the first round. The money is good in the third round and below but its chump change compared to round one.

Both DB's are good but I imagine their stock would depend more on the depth of the DB draft class. I think the combine results have a greater impact than on field performance for DB's. I doubt either one of them will slide up or down more than one round regardless of when they declare.

I don't see Malik coming back. Like someone posted earlier, Malik will blow people away at the combine. He is 6'3" 240 lbs and ran a 4.39 forty at the Nike Opening at 220 lbs. He is the prototype NFL OLB. Someone will snatch him in the first two rounds. Jordan Hicks was the 84th pick (3rd round) at 6'1" 236 lbs and a 4.68 forty. He was also considered injury prone.

If any of the four return Conner would be my bet. He just has more to lose by coming out early. I hope they all stay but I doubt that will happen.

Other than Johnson none of them are even close to MJ.

I realize I asked this question in terms of recruits but if we are expecting freshmen to fill voids for Poona, MJ, Hill, and Deshon we are already screwed.

Worst case scenario is this:

1. Wheeler replaces Malik

2. Chris Brown/John Bonney replaces D. Elliott

3. Chris Nelson slides to nose and replaces Poona

4. Josh Thompson replaces HH

That is still likely the best defense in the big 12 next year imo.

No disrespect intended but not one of those replacements are even close to the current player
