Texas Announces Decision On Reese Leitao (He's In)

Saw on another site, a writer that I thought made some good points on why he has no problem with Leitao coming in and why his situation is different than Baylor's and to some extent OU's.

1. Based on what we know, Leitao's indiscretion was an exception and not a pattern. 

2. Leitao's case is out in the open and Herman has received criticism, faced the music, and made a decision after months of due diligence. 

3. The Athletic Director has been transparent about this concern and findings regarding the case and has even made a public statement. In other words, this is not something that we find out later about and see anything that was slimy or swept under the rug.

4. Leitao is aware that he comes in with a strike against him and that he is on a short leash. If he messes up, not only does he suffer but so will Tom Herman.

Within the context of this thread, I'm honestly not too concerned with how Royal and Mack Brown ran the program. I'm acutely aware of them and their history, but this is Herman's show now.

Again, this isn't WWDKRD or WWMBD time. It's now what would Urban Meyer or Nick Saban do. If we're wanting a coach who can compete for multiple national championships, that's the measure. If we're wanting something else, let's go ahead and drop back into a classification where that's possible, because to me it's useless to be investing these kinds of resources to have a clean mediocre program that goes to a nice bowl game every now and then.

Those who wanted Urban Meyer look like their wishes have come true. Sadly, I'm pretty sure we got the UF Urban Meyer.

Tom Herman has a disturbing tendency to expend political capital needlessly. Casey Horny brings nothing to the organization, yet Herman chose to give the finger to the more conservative wing of the alumni, just because he could. Not a Mensa move.

Now he takes an out-of-state character risk. Character risk is his choice, but out-of-state has to offend those high school coaches who mentored kids who made the grades, didn't sell controlled substances on a school campus, and got passed over for a scholarship offer at their in-state flagship university. Again, not a Mensa move.

Neither Perrin nor Fenves seem to be offering any guidance or oversight to the program. I absolutely believe Leitao is a spoiled, over-privileged Aaron Hernandez, Jr. Not a Mensa move. UT Austin has no responsibility to reform the juvenile delinquents of the state of Oklahoma. Had his scholarship instead gone to an in-state prospect, I might give this the benefit of time, but passing over Texas students to bring in a out-of-state character risk who clearly doesn't appreciate the value of a scholarship the The University of Texas is a huge mistake.

There is no way this turns out well. When Hernandez, Jr steps out of line (which he will, as he understands the rules don't apply to him), Herman will be forced to protect him, as Herman's credibility is on the line and Herman doesn't admit mistakes. Leitao will be the most protected player on the team. "Internal disciplinary matter" will be invoked repeatedly. Fenves and Perrin will continue to look the other way. Let's not kid ourselves - if he was dealing, he was using. The kid will get a pass on his drug tests. Herman will be the last to admit his mistake.

Aaron Hernandez, Jr. Embrace the reality of what UT football has become. Let me be the first to say Tom Herman was the wrong hire.

The UF version of urban won more than one national championship RD. I live in florida and most of my closest friends are alumni of UF including my sister. I happen to hate UF and hernandez but this is not the same thing.

Separately if this kid walks the line and catches the winning touchdown in the national championship games will you be pissed off that herman gave him a second chance.

A bit silly to compare him to a convicted killer (at least convicted prior to killing himself and having his conviction vacated on an archaic law). I do understand your point on lowering standards, but he is no gangland killer. Now, how come we never hear from you when positive things are happening? And Aaron Hernandez as an incoming freshman wasn't "Aaron Hernandez."
Tom Herman is a fanatically driven coach who doesn't admit his mistakes and is being given unlimited control with no supervision. That Herman chose to make his first character risk an out-of-state recruit can't be lost on the Texas coaches who mentored truly high character athletes who didn't choose to deal prescription drug to their classmates.

Herman will never admit his mistakes. It isn't his character. When Leitao fails a drug test, Herman won't admit his mistake. Leitao will again realize the rules don't apply to him.

Herman has a huge flaw that has the clear potential to bring him down in an ugly scandal. True genius requires one to realize their mistakes. Herman thinks he is a true genius. He is not. This will not end well. Herman's refusal to admit his mistakes will be his downfall. Take my word on this. We have the UF Urban Meyer.

Texas was supposed to suffer because it hired Casey Horny. So far, that hasn't been remotely true. In fact, one could easily state the polar opposite.

Now, the only argument that can be made with regard to Leitao is based on a complete assumption of future failure. That can only be disturbing to someone if they truly think they can foretell the future accurately.

Leitao committed and then signed with Texas PRIOR to having legal trouble (Feb. 28 to be exact). To that point, he was as much of a character risk as Randolph Duke is as far as Mensa could tell. And at that point it was too late to run out and try to recruit a Texas TE who had not signed with anybody, but was also Texas good.

So we're getting into the "I'll just say anything" mode that makes these posts somewhat mind-bending. Why don't you just open up your wallet and just pay people to agree with you? I think your hit rate would be much higher. lol

There are plenty of in-state kids that screw up year in and out. Leitao being an OOS or in-state kid isn't really the issue here.

You're painting with a very broad brush comparing this kid to a guy who was convicted of murder and was going to rot away in a prison cell for the rest of his life.

Again I think we are on the same page on whether they should have admitted Leitao, but making a giant assumption that Leitao is or is going to evolve into a violent criminal like Hernandez is absurd and really out of line.
