****Texas Baseball vs TCU Official Weekend Game Thread****

Bottom 5th, Henley still on the mound

Sorry, missed 2 batters.  Here's where we are: Man on 1st with one out.

Barzili: Henley leaves a breaking ball over the plate and inside, Barzili pulls it to LF.  Runner very smartly takes 3rd (exactly what Schlossnagle was talking about, they love to try to go from 1st to 3rd on outfield singles).  1 out, runners on 1st and 3rd.

Merrill: Hits a bouncer right back up the middle, Hamilton gloves it going to his left, flips it from his glove to Boswell who barehands it and fires to first for the 6-4-3 DP! 54th DP of the season for Texas defense.

1 LOB

TCU 8-0

Speaking to how they try to be aggressive with their offensive strategy, they try not to give out too many free outs (i.e. bunts) and will take any opportunity they can to get an extra 90 feet, such as going from 1st to 3rd on singles and how being aggressive with their base running fits into their overall offensive strategy.  Playing offense offensively.

Top 6

Todd: ugh, KS on 3 pitches.  Not a agreat AB from the young'un.

Kody: first pitch F6, 2 down

Jones: grounded to SS with the nice backhand and long throw.  6-3, 3up 3 down.

Brian Howard has now retired 8 straight batters and has only allowed 1 H through 6 innings.

Bot 6, Henley still on the mound

Watson: Henley gets up 0-2, eventually falls into a full count and walks him on a low breaking ball.  (of note, Cantu has now replaced McCann behind the plate).  Runner on 1st.  (4th time TCU has lead batter on base.)

Wade: lines a single up the middle and into CF, surprise surprise runner hustles all the way to 3rd base.  Runners on 1st and 3rd

Wanhanan: HBP, breaking ball inside hits him on the knee.  Bases juiced with 0 outs.

Henley is done, overall, pitched a pretty good almost 3 innings I think.  Settled down after coming in in the 3rd, but we're in some trouble here.

SO Parker Joe Robinson on the hill

Bases juiced, 0 outs

Baker: Parker Joe gets ahead of the count, jams him up inside and gets in on his hands, soft fly to short.  F6, 1 out

Skoug: grounds to SS for the easy 6-4-3 DP.  3rd of the day and 55th of the season.

Parker Joe Robinson gets out of the bases juiced 0 outs jam without giving up a run!

TCU 8-0 through 6 complete

Top 7, Brian Howard back up to the mound

Kacy  B)  : Defense has the left handed shift on.  3rd baseman lines up essentially at SS.  Kacy KS on a high fastball, 3 pitch strikeout. 1 out

Mathis: Draws the walk.  Man on 1st

Howard currently at 89 pitches, but season high is 119    last two innings were less than 10 pitches each.  Our hitters need to do better of getting deep into counts and piling up that pitch count.

Gurwitz: Check swing on a good breaking ball gets him KS on 3 pitches (I feel like I've typed KS on 3 pitches too much today.)  Announcer jinx: "Last 7 games, Gurwitz is a .400 hitter and has not struck out since" immediately followed by the 3rd pitch strike.

Boswell: decent AB, works a 2-2 count, but flies out to straight CF.  F8

1 LOB

TCU 8-0 heading to bottom 7

Bottom 7, Parker Joe Robinson still on the mound

Batter: RIPS a ball down the 3rd base line, Ryan Reynolds (newly inserted into the game at 3rd) with a GREAT backhand stop and long throw, gets the out.  5-3, 1 out

Brown: Cantu loses it in the sun, can't make the catch on the foul ball.  Rips a liner opposite field, just over Reynolds who makes a good effort and ball goes off of his glove.  Runner tries to hustle out a double, but Todd (now in LF) guns him down at 2nd.  2 outs

Barzili: easy F8, 3up 3down for Parker Joe.

TCU 8-0 through 7 complete

Top 8, Howard trots back out to the hill at 97 pitches

Cantu:  Good AB, fends off a foul ball or two, works the full count, but eventually softly flies out to RF.  F9 1 out

Reynolds: first pitch hotshot grounder on the right side, but right at Baker, who steps on the bag for 2 outs

Todd: Good AB, works a full count walk.  Runner on 1st, Howard now up to 111 pitches.

Kody: passed ball moves Todd over to 2nd.  Easy 4-3 groundout.  3 outs

1 LOB

TCU 8-0 heading to bottom 8

Bottom 8, Parker Joe still on the mound

Merrill: slow grounder down 3rd base line, Reynolds charges and makes a BEAUTIFUL barehand field, throw on the run, and gets the runner.  1 out

Watson: lines to SS, L6 for 2 outs

Wade: lines to Kacy at 1st, 3up 3down

TCU 8-0 through 8 complete

Top 9, time for the rally caps!!

Howard is done at 114 pitches

New meat for TCU is SO Dalton Brown, looking to close out the game with a nervewracking tight 8 run lead.

Jones: first pitch smacks a SUD (stand-up double) to the RF wall, just missed getting on the board.  Runner on 2nd

Kacy  B)  : Shift on again, and Kacy exploits it, gets a ground ball just to the left side of the 2nd base bag and into CF.  RBI single, Jones comes around from 2nd to score.

TCU 8-1 and Horns avoid the first shutout of the season (silver linings y'all, I guess).

Boswell: Hard hit ball to first, GREAT diving stop by 1st baseman, gets the easy out at 1st.  1 out, Kacy advances to 2nd on the FC3

Gurwitz: bouncer to SS, 6-3, Kacy advances to 3rd.  2 outs

McKenzie: Reaches out and slaps a grounder to third, goes off of the fielder's glove and everybody is safe.  E5 and Texas gets another run across.

TCU 8-2, 2 outs runner on 1st.

Cantu: gets ahead 3-0, draws a 5 pitch walk.  Texas has runners on 1st and 2nd, 2 outs.

Reynolds: Foul ball out in RF, Wade runs a LONG way to try to end the game, misses it but slides hard into the wall.  Took a minute to catch his breath and shake it off, but glad to see he's ok.  AB continues and Reynolds gets ahead 3-1, rips another foul ball to run the count full.  Next pitch JUST misses up and away and Reynolds will take the free base.

Bases juiced, 2 outs, and Brown is done for the day.

New meat for TCU is FR Cal Coughlin (WP of record from last night's game), trying to get the final out.

Bases juiced, 2 outs

Todd: 0-2, passed ball, but bounces back off the wall and runners decide not to risk it.  Everyone stays put.  Eventually hits a soft bouncer to 2B, FC 4-6 ends the game.

3 LOB

TCU wins 8-2

FINAL BOOK

Texas 2/3/2

TCU 8/11/1

WP Howard

LP Kingham

See y'all manana

HookEm!

2 errors for Texas, both in that awful 3rd inning.

Speaking of the third inning, 6 of TCU's 11 hits and 7 of their 8 runs came in that single inning.  Bullpen did a good job of stopping the bleed, but by then, it was too late.  Without that one inning, this is much closer of a game.  However, 3 H for the Horns just ain't going to do it.  Alas, it was not to be.

Game 3 is tomorrow on ESPNU, 2 ET, 1CT, and 11 am for those of us on the West Coast.  See y'all tomorrow!

Not 100% certain, but I think Pierce felt that Cooper with a better record and ERA may have given Texas a better chance to get the W in Game 1.
Craig mentioned in the radio call last night that with them both last Friday that Cooper actually bounced back a little better during the week.
