This place is dead

Here is my take, and I admit to being as uninformed as yall are.. Anyway, here goes.....I started on the free board on OB and am still there. I also do the free part of 24/7, and this board. My personal opinion is that HS is the best board for recruiting info and it isnt even close, especially as signing day approaches. OB seems to have many more posters...on occassion, but does the worst job for recruiting info. I also think it is a better place since Dabomb left because he started many arguments and continually changed his positions....very annoying. I look at 24/7 because they have lots of info, but of the threads I can read, I can only post on about 10% which is frustrating.

The bottom line is dont get down about this. If you think this board goes dead, the OB free board goes comotose....sometimes days go by with not even one little comment.

If you want to see new posts everyday go to the Shag....

Yea, you can read new posts on the Shag everyday. But how many will you have to read before you get to one that actually says anything worthwhile? The lack of actual useful information on the Shag is quite amazing.

What's "The Shag"?  This is the only board I'm a member.  Although I do get email alerts from 24/7 for both the Longhorns and the Dallas Cowboys...

I've been on OBs going back to theuniversity.com days. I don't think I've ever been on their free board.

HS from a football content aspect is the equivalent of most pay sites, yet it's free to be here. It's a helluva value considering the other sites run around $100-ish annually.

Also I will say that the baseball discussion here is better than OB. Though in that regard, McComas is incredibly under rated over there especially his baseball stuff. I would have liked to see what this board would have been in the baseball basketball world if Matt had been able to stay longer.

I am guessing here, but I think he's referring to the "main board" that Rivals has where they can come from all kinds of rivals sites.

That place was pure entertainment. No moderator wanted to go there. lol It was a constant frat party. One day you'd see some eggy swear he's coming to beat someone up by tracking their IP (lol) to another guy posting nude photos of his wife. Sports talk was only worth the effort if it resulted in some rivalry argument. lol

If there is a digital jungle, that place was it.

Yep, HS is a good value. I spend almost all my online time with this site up.

I was at the university.com as well, and horn fans before that. I was on university.com's board when the "Gotch Yarbrough" incident went down. lol

I think it was Jerry Scarborough, Truorange, who pulled that off.

That's going back a ways. Haha

It was a trick pulled on David Garvin. The incident pretty much ended his Longhorn message board career.

Is there a write up of what you guys are referring to? It sounds interesting.

Think of it as a bit of folklore.  There's no documented proof laying around anywhere, you just have to rely on the fireside stories told by your elders.  ;)

Back in the day, Garvin ran the university.com and was a recruiting guru. Some of the members, after a while, began to question just how much Garvin knew the recruits he was writing about.

So someone (can't remember who) began talking about a fictional recruit from Canada named "Gotch Yarbrough." Totally made up, but the poster and others began talking about him in glowing terms and how underrated he was. They even suggested Garvin look into the guy.

Next thing ya know, Gotch Yarbrough is in Garvin's top 100 recruits list. From there, it just got ugly. lol

So it was like the SI April Fools issue talking about Sid Fiddich...Phenom unknown pitcher.....I admit, that one had me going for a while....163 MPH fastball indeed.

So is this Garvin guy resurrected under a sock name....?

I talked with Jerry Scarborough about it.

Back in the day Jerry had a 900 phone service for recruiting. Made good money on it. Obviously this was before the Internet which is what put Jerry out of business. At any rate he suspected Garvin of using stuff that he had stolen from Jerry on his 900 number.

So Jerry planted this story about "Gotch Yarborough" and what a world class athlete he was. Sure enough Garvin started touting the guy on his service.

Busted. Big time.

I talked with Jerry many times. Yet the last time we talked something didn't seem right. He wasn't quite sure who I was. I was told later that he was in early stages of Alzheimer's. He was a hell of a good guy and had some good sources. But when the Internet came along he could not adapt to it.
