Questions about the Game

So I will apologize in advance if I don't make total since but I'm "slightly buzzed" from the tailgate, the game and eating out after the game.

1) The "non-lateral call" that from the replay at the stadium clearly appeared to be a lateral that Texas recovered deep in Baylor territory. For those watching on TV was it a lateral and what did the announcers say?

2) The Malike TD that was ruled down due to forward progress. From the replay it appeared the Baylor QB was still running slightly forward and sideways when he "threw the ball" backwards which Malik picked up for a TD which would have iced the game. What did it appear to be like on TV and any comments from the announcers?

BTW, Malik played very well in my opinion.

3) Did Vahe ever see the field? I don't recall seeing him. Is he injured or was he really benched?

4) Were the refs that bad or was the beer I consumed that good? 

5) WTH were the coaches thinking on the 2 pt conversion and the 4th down play near the end? Both times we had our best running threat lined up as a WR!

6) Were there a lot of "cheap shots" by Baylor or again, was it the beer?

Good win by the Horns, always good to beat the Brazos Baptists.

1) It was close. I think no matter what they called on the field, it was going to stand, although it looked like a lateral to me.

2) It looked like a fumble on TV as well. I really don't understand how they can call forward progress on that one, unless there's something I'm missing.

3) I haven't heard any more about it. I don't believe he saw the field, unlike the others (Malik, Wheeler, Burt, Davis, Hill, Omenihu) who were only benched for the first few drives at most.

4) Refs were terrible. Not quite "OSU 2015" bad, but it was bad.

5) I haven't seen any good explanation for it. I was literally yelling at my TV both times. Gilbert really has some explaining to do there.

6) I saw a few (holding Brandon Jones's leg on a kickoff, shoving Connor Williams down). That was all I saw, although I may have missed some.

Malik had some terrible plays but showed up several times, too. Maybe he'll figure it out like Jinkens did last year but I do wonder if he'll have his hand in the dirt at some point. Some players are just meant to plug and he may not be one of them.

What I saw was a clear fumble...and because he was running backwards, I have no idea how Russel established any forward progress. What they should have said was they blew the whistle the instant Malik touched him. I agree that Malik made some plays, but he was not great. I also wonder if Burt can catch at all. Over on OB we have a former player that gets to see the fall scrimmages and he said everytime Burt touched the ball it "sounded like a starter pistol"....so much for soft hands. Unless they make him work with a juggler, I am beginning to lose hope for him.

With regards to referee's calls, I have noticed that there is a direct correlation between how a fan thinks the call should gone and what team he or she roots for. Most, if not all, of the calls could have gone either way.

This is why I'd say that it wasn't as bad as OSU last year; both teams got screwed at one point or another. The lack of holding calls seemed to go both ways. In my opinion, though, the two biggest blown calls were the lack of offensive PI on Zamora's TD, and that really bizarre 'forward progress' call at the end of the game.

I think the biggest blown call may have been the non-targeting call on Kris Boyd. If that wasn't targeting then they need to stop calling targeting. We got really lucky on that one.

I get what you're saying. I guess my point is that on that one, they spent several minutes reviewing it. If they can look at that for 4-5 minutes from every conceivable angle and rule that it wasn't targeting, then I'm inclined to believe they had some reason for not calling targeting (even if I can't figure out what that reason is).

I don't know how the replay official doesn't call this a targeting foul.

Well, the only thing I could think of as to why they didn't call targeting was that Russell lowered himself down just prior to impact.  Almost as if he was thinking about attempting a slide.  This brought his head area lower and into the area of Boyd's helmet, where to me it seemed Boyd was just trying to get his head across.  But again, that is the only explanation I could rationalize.  I'm glad it wasn't called targeting though.

They stated on the radio why it wasn't and I believe it was something close to what PeteA422 is saying. But then again, the beer was flowing last Saturday so.....

There was a call last week the the aggy/bama game that was similar. The explanation given for the no-call was that targeting only applies to a "defenseless" runner/receiver.  In that case, the player had established himself as a runner and was not considered defenseless.  This seems similar.

While that may or may not be true, if targeting was not the call, there should have been a personal foul called for head to head contact...right?

Boyd did not hit with the crown of the helmet...it could have been called, but they reviewed the hell out of it and determined it was not targeting.
