Upsets mark first weekend of HS football
Texas commit Josh Thompson returns kick off 98 yards for touchdown, Ehlinger gives heroic performance
What a way to start out the 2016 high school football season! The top three schools in Class 6A all fell to defeat last week. Cedar Hill failed in its bid to defend Texas pride, losing badly to Las Vegas Gorman. Texas commit Sam Ehlinger led his team to an upset of top ranked Katy, but left the field with two torn MCLs. And Lake Travis was upended by Converse Judson.
Despite this, don’t be surprised to see Ehlinger on the field this weekend. Austin Westlake is your new top ranked team this week.
Elsewhere, Gilmer won the battle of East Texas against Liberty-Eylau, 61-56. Liberty-Eylau and Texas commit Lagaryonn Carson will get no rest, however, as they return home to Texarkana to host #5 Carthage in what will no doubt be Battle of East Texas, Part II.
Allen, which defeated Hoover out of Alabama, will take on another out of state opponent this week in Shreveport Evangel. Southlake Carroll took it to the chin, losing to Oklahoma power Tulsa Union. Southlake Carroll had less than 300 yards of total offense in the loss. When was the last time that happened?
There are tons of big games this week. Lots of rivalry games will be featured. The classic Longview-Marshall rivalry will be renewed. Lufkin will take on Texas Commit Josh Thompson and his Nacogdoches Dragons in another shoot out. Texas commit Damian Miller and the John Tyler Lions will take on powerful Ennis. Texarkana Texas High will take on Texarkana Arkansas High in another rivalry game. In DFW, the annual Dallas Carter vs Dallas Kimball shoot out should be a good game.
In the Houston area, all eyes will be on the #4 Manvel vs #8 Galena Park North Shore game.
Austin’s Lake Travis, fresh off their loss to Converse Judson, will try to rebound against another state ranked foe – #7 Cibolo Steele. Austin Westlake and Texas future QB Sam Ehlinger will take on Henderson, Nevada’s Liberty HS. Liberty lost to Las Vegas Gorman last year in Nevada’s state championship game. Gorman destroyed Cedar Hill this past week.
In East Texas last week, the big showdown between Gilmer and Liberty-Eylau proved to be a game of contrasts, but equal success. Gilmer passed 45 times (578 yards) while Liberty-Eylau only attempted 7 passes all night. By contrast, L-E had two rushers over 100 yards on the night. Together, the two teams combined for 1,131 yards of total offense. WOW.
The Biggie of the Metroplex this weekend however will be the Shawn Robinson Bowl. DeSoto QB Shawn Robinson transferred from Denton Guyer over the off season. Robinson, Texas Commit Xavier Newman and the Eagles will take on Guyer this weekend. Guyer is ranked #13 while DeSoto is at #6.
Finally, in the “What am I doing here Bowlâ€, upstart Princeton which upset #5 Celina last week will play host to Van’s Vandals, who upset #2 Mineola last week.
