Former LSU placekicker and 2015 Lou Groza Award (nation's top kicker) semifinalist Trent Domingue (doh-MAIN) has signed a financial aid agreement to join the Texas football program as a graduate transfer, Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong confirmed on Sunday.
"We're obviously thrilled that Trent decided to join our program," Strong said. "What a great addition in a critical position of need for us. Trent's an experienced and proven kicker who has had a great deal of success at the highest level and competed in pressure situations. He'll be a strong leader on our special teams, and we look forward to getting him on campus."
Domingue, who received his degree in general business from LSU in spring 2016 and is a member of the 2016 Groza Award preseason watch list, took over as LSU's primary placekicker with two games remaining in the 2014 season. He was 2-of-4 that year, prior to going 13-of-17 in 2015, including a streak of 10 consecutive made attempts. He also put together a streak of 42 consecutive made extra points, which was the eighth longest in LSU history, prior to one being blocked. He finished the season 49-of-50 in PATs and has made 55-of-56 in his career.
"I've always known that Texas has been a pretty storied program, both academically and athletically," Domingue said. "I knew coach Brick (Haley) from LSU, and he's a big reason why I had interest in Texas initially. I'm really excited to get there and start training and getting to know everyone. Coach Strong is great and seems like a players coach. I think it will be an awesome time playing for him."
A former walk-on with the Tigers, Domingue handled a majority of the kickoff duties in 2014 with 51 attempts for an average of 62.2 yards per kick and 28 touchbacks. Once becoming the placekicker for 2015, he split those duties and kicked off 32 times for an average of 58.4 ypk with seven touchbacks.
"My mom went to the University of Texas in Arlington so she has a little background with Texas, but I definitely like the grad program there," Domingue said. "I'll be in advertising, so it will be good to finish and have that for later on in life.
"I want to thank LSU for giving me the last four years, some of the best of my life. Unfortunately it didn't work out, but that's life. I've just got to keep going, and I've found a great home, so I'm excited."
A prep soccer standout who did not start playing football until his junior year in high school, the Mandeville, La. native developed into a first-team 5A all-state selection as a senior at St. Paul's High School and twice earned all-district honors. He was also chosen all-district as a punter as a senior.
