Let's try again - Gilbert to Texas

So then we have no reliable information that any BMD did anything wrong? Am I right?
There is speculation out there this thing was getting torpedoed behind the scenes and honestly there's some evidence that suggests that may be true but I don't believe we've reported anything official on it. I've done a lot of reporting the past few days though so I forget things. Something got Fenves involved though which shouldn't be overlooked.

Thanks Mike. I know you were giving me all you've got. But to read this board today the BMD's have been lynched. Yet it sounds like to me they have not even had a trial.I think too many people have to have an immediate scapegoat. I also think there is a lot of jealousy toward very successful people, ie BMD's.

Maybe they are to blame or maybe not. As someone on this board said the other day, I don't know jack shit. The problem is, I don't think the lynch mob does either.

So I'm currently getting my ass torn apart by Baylor fans for not giving up my source on this.

I mean I can say that it came from a higher up in the administration after meetings with Gilbert fizzled the first time and reaffirmed with a meeting and reconfirmed by Tulsa reporter, who wanted to stay unnamed for job security and to avoid Baylor mob.

I didn't know what he was talking about (the Tulsa reporter). Now I know.

Lol.

edit: apparently the joke of wanting to avoid the Baylor mob went over their heads. Oh well.

edit2: let me reiterate. The Baylor mob thing was a joke. Tongue and cheek. A joke not to be taken seriously. I'm done for today
Baylor fans can suck it, Briles is a well known turd💩💩💩

One of the largest UT related stories in a long time is out there and I suspect that none of the 'reporters' are going to follow up on it. Was this entire fiasco simply a negotiating cluster f by coach Strong? Does that make sense? Were there administration members involved in the failed negotiations? Were BMDs involved? Were media (newspaper/digital/etc...) willingly or not, used to attempt to take down a coach?

There is a timeline available on articles, posts, tweets, etc

With all the aspiring journalists out there we are going to settle for, 'Well, we have Gilbert now and to talk anymore about the process and the embarrassment just makes Texas look bad'?

I want to know what and who was driving this crap.

If you never knew your history you have no choice but for it to repeat itself again and again.

I honestly don't get the negativity related to this. If I was coach Gilbert I would probably turn down the first offer as well. I would've known that I was the current top candidate, I already had a job so I wasn't desperate, and Texas wanted to fill the spot ASAP. He had all the leverage. That's how you negotiate. UT was trying to get him at a lower cost and it didn't work. So they would go back with another offer. However, the media got a hold of the original turn down and blew it way out of proportion which have Gilbert even more leverage to get anything he wanted. Had the media circus not followed this, then Texas would have their new OC coach within 1 week after the season and we would be happy about it for them not dragging their feet. But no, the media had to be on this for every second of everyday. I blame them (mostly) for this fiasco.

Bottom line, Texas got their man (albeit 2nd choice) within 1 week after the end of the season. That is pretty darn fast, even in today's "I want it now" world. Also, Gilbert did what everyone of us should have done in his situation and NEGOTIATED for what he wanted to uproot his family to a new area.

Briles is busy recruiting his next all american rapist but he will always have time to try to crap on us.

He is a d-bag pissed off at the world because he cant keep his hair.

I am not buying it.  It sounds like you are trying to make yourself feel better that we were turned down the first time.  Stop and think about it.  Tulsa is Tulsa.  So here we are at a point trying to rationalize why a FCS OC at Tulsa has turned down the mighty Longhorns because he had a job and is just waiting to get scooped up by Ohio State as the next Urban in waiting.  I'm sorry man but that's one hell of a stretch.  Its Tulsa.  T-U-L-S-A.  I am much more willing to buy that argument with Cumbie at TCU than I am with Gilbert at Tulsa.

This whole dramatic event has all of us pulling together in a big group hug ready to hang anyone even slightly rumored to be at fault.  This entire farce shows how far we have fallen regardless of who is it at fault.  Pick your poison as to why, it doesnt change a thing.  BMD's, Perrin, Strong doesn't matter.  It is making a joke of our school.  Something has to change whether its running off BMD's or the HC.

Winning cures alot of this mess and I can only hope Gilbert helps deliver an offense that can actually score.

'FCS OC'? He was also a HIgh School OC. And a FBS OC. And now he's OC at the University of Texas.

This is the first time I've been back on the thread since asking the question last night "what happened"? I appreciate those who tried to answer that question.

Sounds like to me we really do not know and may never know. I'm OK with that. I just felt like after all the hysteria of yesterday I must have missed something that was common knowledge.

Gilbert's agent is the MVP of this deal. He had almighty UT over-pay and negotiate against itself. Unfortunately, we almost had to given the circumstances. The media covering UT put too much pressure on our people to get the job done NOW just to save face.

Having said that, kudos to Fenves for actually stepping up and putting his money where his mouth is. For our sake, I hope Gilbert is as good as advertised. I can do without the coaching changes for awhile - too much drama.

That's fine, you don't have to buy it. I'm just saying what I would do in that situation. If I was younger I would jump at the first offer Texas gave me, but being late 30's to early 40's I would have more things on my mind to contend with. I've moved from Texas to DC, back to Texas , and now live in St. Louis. Each move was for better opportunities in my career, but each move was increasingly difficult to make because of my family. I certainly didn't make a decision to move in 3 days. If I was pressured to do so, I would certainly get whatever I could out of it to make it easier for me and my family. That's all I'm saying. Winning does cure everything.

Truer words never spoken.

Gilbert doesn't even have a family - he's 37 years old and single.

I wouldn't play poker with this guy, turning down a $600k offer when he's only making $175k (supposedly). Most people in his position couldn't say "YES" fast enough! Helluva job by his agent - and Gilbert for his restraint.
