Eye on the O - Spring practice preview, Part I

Diesel, we should start a thread entitled "The moment Swoopes lost me" ha ha.

I can't recall exactly which game it was but it was late in the season. Swoopes gives the ball on a read instead of keeping it and running 35-40 yards through the largest hole I've seen Texas create in three years. When he turned that down, I just threw my hands up. After almost a full season and a bowl game, this is what he chose to do in that moment.

Even if it's a called hand-off, you pull that ball and run through that hole that only God could create. A QB mentality would have made that happen.

My biggest thing with Swoopes and what made me lose confidence in him was that deer in the headlight look he got in the last two games of the season, especially the Arkansas game. When the moment was big he lost all confidence and bailed mentally. If Heard is even 70% the QB Swoopes is throwing the ball you have to start him. Confidence can make up for a lot of mistakes as a QB develops. I would hate to get to game four before we figure out we should have been starting Heard the whole time.
I agree, these reports about Swoopes throwing the better ball or looking physically better is misleading because ever since Swoopes stepped foot on campus the question was never about his physical tools. Physically you can not get much more ideal than Tyrone Swoopes, but if you watched UT football last season you saw the problem was not Swoopes physical characteristics and traits. It was the intangibles, and the mental side. Also his attitude, confidence and leadership. Now I'm not saying I know Heard has all these things cuz we have yet to see him play in a game, but just be careful to anoint Swoopes as the clear better QB without remembering what his weaknesses were last year.

I must be remembering the same play just can't remember which game. I thought the same thing. In fact I think I screamed "my crippled mother could'a....." with a few expletives deleted.

Here we go again.  I'm compelled to counter your position with what should be obvious to all of us, but is obscured with the drumbeat of bashing Swoopes.

Before I point out the obvious, let me make it clear that that I don't think the kid is an all everything QB.  Far from it, my position is he should not even have seen the field until this year - or maybe even next year.

This kid arrived at UT from a tiny little town that played 2A football.  In essence, he was a country bumpkin going to school in the big city.  He was thrust into the chaos of just acclimating to college - never mind playing football...For the UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS...with grown ass men...at the position if QB.

He was probably thinking "Thank God I get to RS this year - you go Ash.".

All of a sudden he is the STARTING QB for the mighty Texas Longhorns, in front of monstrous, roaring crowds.  Deer in the headlights did you say?  What did you expect - the second coming of Colt McCoy?  The finished senior Colt McCoy - who struggled mightily as a freshman himself?  And a RS freshman at that.

In addition, he had to play behind, arguably, the worst damned OL in the history of the storied UT football program.  And with receivers that could not have been starters on half of the Big 12 teams.

That surrounding cast was destroyed by two of the best defenses in college - in Arky and TCU.  Subsequently, so was Swoopes.

And, yeah, Swoopes contributed poor play himself - sometimes he stunk horribly.  But he had PLENTY of company - from players a lot older than he and a lot more experienced.

So how about cutting that youngster a little slack?

You Swoopes bashers cannot be so ignorant as to think this kid can't improve from year to year.  Will he eliminate some of the horrible freshman play from last year?  I like to think he will.  Logic dictates it.  It also dictates that Heard should be better as well.  We shall soon see.

But, look, this is a new year and Heards RS is off and there will be stiff competition between the two - and even more when Locksley arrives.

And the bottom line is that we all want the best man to play - whomever it is.

Strong has cleared the board - why can't everyone else?

Dang Doc, I usually agree with you but this post is way out there.  I'm not a Swoopes fan or a basher-taking a wait and see attitude.  Truth be told I'm hoping to see a huge improvement in the young man, but won't be surprised if it's not there.  You seem to think that Swoopes was a Freshman last year when he became QB..not so.  Now we can all probably agree that Mack totally burned and wasted his redshirt that year but let's not lay down an argument that the kid was just out of high school and trying to acclimate to college.  He already had a year in the program.  And yes, he played behind a line that was god-awful.. but it was the same awful line all year.  Now the fact is that he did regress terribly in those last two games and you can't bash folks for saying that.  Were they against better competition..we'd all like to hope that's the case, but his performance was abysmal.  Was it the only horrible performance, not by a long shot.

You seem to have a thin skin when it comes to folks talking about Swoopes.  Let's all take your advise and watch the competition as it plays out now and in the summer when we will have at least one other QB option on campus.

All everything QB? Really? Most of us would be happy if he just reminded us of a QB from time to time.

Strong has cleared the board because he has to utilize every asset he has, even the known commodities. He's the only QB with any experience. But don't think Charlie has forgotten the frustration and helplessness of having Swoopes under center.

Swoopes lead his class AA high school team to a 2-8 record.

Heard lead his class 5A high school team to two state championships.

Spin forward and Swoopes' next results are what we saw last year.

The fact is – the kid has never done it, never turned the corner. What in tarnation drives you to continue to think it's in there somewhere? I'm convinced he's playing out of position. With some coaching, he'd make a decent TE.

Mark - PLEASE don't throw HS exploits at me as criteria for a players ability in college.  I know for a fact you are smarter than this.  We recruit a HS player on his potential college performance - we play them in college on his ACTUAL college performance.  Swoopes beat out Heard - the coaches said so.  IMO, that puts a cap on this argument for last year.

Besides, you may be interested in knowing that Kai Locksley's Junior high teams were undefeated for 2 straight years and he was POY both years.  Is that a qualifier for the starting position of QB at the mighty University of Texas? :)

Another question - do you really mean there was no time at all that Swoopes reminded you of a QB?  I'm going to cut you some slack on this and just assume you were being rhetorical.  Because there is no way you could have watched all the games and believed this.

Look, folks, please link me to any statement whereby I said Swoopes was a great QB.  Anyone?  Because, if Heard can blow Swoopes away this year, I am all for it.  .

But let's tap the brakes a little on the ridiculous bashing of that kid.  I saw way too much of this kind of stuff being thrown at Bradley, Simms, Applewhite and, yes, even at VY and Colt.

Let it all play out and let the best man win.  After all, this isn't Texags.

You do seem to have a soft spot for Swoopes. If I wanted to bash him, I would have been a little more obvious.

59 yards

59

That's it, that's all we got after an entire year of spring practice, fall practice and regular season of experience Swoopes received after his second season in the program.

You think I'm "bashing" him for pointing out his obvious regression over the season? I tried to be patience with him over a full season. Watched him continually miss passes short and long, miss option reads that would have gone for long runs, and I could have lived with all that if he had shown that he was progressing.

Then in the last game, He commits one of the worst mistakes you can as a quaterback. He lost confidence and mentally mailed it in. All his teammates saw it in his eyes and you could see the whole team deflate.

If it was just a matter of him having a weak are or slow mechanics then I would agree that he just needs more time to develop but that's not what it is, it's mental and I hate to say this about anyone who puts in the work to play football at the college level but when things got tough in those last two games he mentally quit on the team.

You can like Swoopes all you want and he seems like a good guy but the warning signs should be obvious at this point. He goes 2-8 his last year in high school on a 2A team. His senior year should have been the year he was putting everything together. His size alone should have won 4-5 games at worst playing in 2A. Instead, he and his team completely underachieve. That's forgivable, maybe he just had a poor coach.

He then comes to Texas as a freshman and can't beat out McCoy or Ash, not that they were horrible qb's but neither one of them were NFL prospects or even the best QB's in the conference. No biggie, he was a freshman.

He makes it to his sophomore year. Ash gets hurt. No competition. Every offensive coach on the staff is solely dedicated to making him better. He gets all the first team snaps through the year. He gets personalized film study, where the coaches break down ever play he makes, helping him learn the right way to play QB.

He shows signs of promises but begins to regress until we get our butts kicked by TCU. Okay that sucked but TCU has a good defense and has made a lot of QB's look bad.

He then gets all the first team snaps during bowl practice. The coaches spend a month developing a perfect game plan to attack Arkansas.

After all that, he leads our team to 59 yards......59.

The reports of him being a workout warrior and throwing clean crisp passes are great to hear but those are all physical attributes. Those have never been the problem. Running a up tempo offense doesn't really encourage me either because he managed to have a 2-8 record in high school running the same thing.

There's something to be said about being a winner when it comes to sports. Heard has proved he's capable, Swoopes has proved he's not. I hope Swoopes proves me wrong and makes me look like a juggling idiot but we will have a potential three other Qb's that deserve the chance to reach their potential. It's time to see what the other guys can do with all coaching focused on them. Time to give Heard a chance.

Sorry for the wall of text

Chris Simms looked a helluva lot better getting off the bus and working out in shorts, too, but I'd still rather see Applewhite under center.

We ain't gonna learn a damn thing until we watch both Swoopes and Heard operate in live, full-contact scrimmages. Assuming we even get to see that at the risk of injury. It's gonna be a contentious spring on the HS forum!

If that's an example of a "perfect game plan" than we've got problems a helluva lot bigger than Swoopes! Just sayin'

What does a "jugging idiot" look like, Dieselprime?

Lol no matter how much I try to hide it my sarcastic nature it always seems to slip through the cracks. Although it might not sound like it, I do not put that loss all on Swoopes.

Why not review a players' exploits in HS? You do it with every single recruit we get and more. When we have to judge playing time, with Heard you have to go back to Denton. With Swoopes, it's Austin. But what they did in HS matters because it tells you something about what they can be later, in college. Swoopes gave you no reason to think he's a D1 QB. Come on, 2-8 at AA ball? I think we had long ago agreed this was one of Mack's biggest mistakes. We ditched a star at OSU for this guy. smh

–  Swoopes did not beat out Heard. Heard was redshirted and did not compete for playing time at all. Heard was a frosh and most frosh get the shirt, especially at QB. So that point makes no difference and no, the coaches didn't "say so."

– As for potential and actual – Swoopes has a very ugly actual. Heard has no actual. Yet you're dissing the unknown in favor of the ugly actual. I'll leave you alone with that for a minute.

– In the pointless words of Obama, "let me be clear" . . . at no time since he's stepped onto the 40 has Swoopes reminded me of a QB. He runs awkward. He has a strong arm but so does our OLB. And they look the same when they throw the ball, unfortunately. I say he'd make a decent TE but that will require some serious coaching with his footwork. I have no problem telling you over and over again I just don't think he even resembles our guy at QB.

An opinion that suggests the kid is playing out of position and is not an adequate QB is not bashing a kid. That's you trying to make me feel bad. Otherwise, what is the point in having a message board if you dare not notice or say anything negative about how a player performs? Thats just nuts. I love the kid, but he's not a good QB. That's ok even in Obama's America.

We don't have any choice in letting it all play out. Charlie won't stop anything for you or me. But as we stand here now, that's what I think of the situation.

Which OLB throws as well as Swoopes? Just curious. Maybe we should've put him in Q4 of the TCU and Arky games?  :P

Did you read my comment?  Did you note where I said we judge HS talent for potential?

And, heavens no I'm not trying to make you feel bad.  I like you, even when you are so incredibly wrong. :)

I just don't agree with your opinions on Swoopes - what.. so.. ever.  That's all.
