Quick Thoughts on Texas's win over Baylor

- First off, the Longhorns were finally rewarded for their improved play with a win. That's huge.

- 7 players were ejected for a "fight" which made no sense to me. I understand the letter of the law as well as most people. However, there are times that discretion is best. Ejecting Lammert when he clearly was trying to de-esclate the situation was one of those times for official discretion.

- Other media members may hate the fight and the edge Texas played with tonight, but I loved it. When I interviewed the players after the Kansas game, they were confident and cocky. Something I didn't expect from a team that just lost a heartbreaker in Lawrence. This team is starting to show the promise it once had. Hopefully for good.

- Purdue plays at Michigan State on Wednesday. Root for the Spartans in that game. Sparty is not going to be in the field of 68 this year but Purdue can and take Texas's spot. So if you really want to binge watch college basketball, every day this week matters.

- 3 guards (Yancy, Felix, Holland) were in double figures for points. That was big.

- Myles Turner with 6 blocks. You know that boy is mad.

- Kenny Chery went 3-13 from the field. That helped the Longhorns a lot.

- Overall, it's a solid win but nothing spectacular. Texas did what everyone expected them to do, play good defense and win a close basketball game. Now they have to prepare for Saturday's game against Kansas State.

P.S. This tweet sums up my thoughts on the Big 12:

If we can beat K-State and have a respectable showing in the Big12 tourney we may have a shot. I'm thinking we've gotta win a couple of games in Kansas City to make it.

The problem is seeding.

Texas is 8th right now. Oklahoma State is 7th. Kansas State is 6th.

Texas is 7-10, KSU is 8-9 and OSU is 7-9. OSU play TCU and at West Virginia. Let's assume all finish 8-10. Three way tie.

First would go to collective record.

Texas would be 2-2.

OSU would be 3-1

Kansas State would be 1-3.

In that scenario, OSU would be 6th, get the bye. Texas and KSU would be 7th and 8th respectively.

Right now, you are hoping TCU wins in Stillwater on Wednesday. That way, you get OSU to 7-11. Texas wins against KSU, they would move to 6th and get the bye.

Now the bye would be great but they would get either OU, ISU or WVU regardless. Texas would want WVU over the other two. That is going to be tricky at this point but we'll see.

I don't think we want the bye. We want another win against TCU or Tech in that first game.

not sure a win against either of those mutts helps and we're not so good that a win is a sure thing anyway. Gimme the bye.
Gets us to the magic 20 wins though. Perception wise getting to 20 wins is big IMO.

TCU isn't that bad of a team either (#51 in the KenPom). People forget TCU went undefeated in nonconference, but ran into the best basketball league in about 20 years. That actually would be a fairly decent win.

I think we need one more win in the Big 12 tournament to feel safe so that's why I hope we don't get the bye (of course we have to beat K-State).

Tcu.'s RPI is 121. Beating them does nothing and we could lose. Gimme the bye
We will agree to disagree. We need one more win.

We could very well lose to Tech or TCU. I'll take our chances against TCU/Tech over West Virgnia, OU and ISU. If we can't beat Tech or TCU we don't deserve to make the tournament.

Bottom line, we need another win. Getting that 20th win is very important IMO. They actually talked about this after the game, the broadcasters agreed getting to 20 wins in the Big 12 would be difficult to keep a team out of the tournament.

Next game up for Texas, K-State. They are 12-4 at home, 2-2 on neutral court and 1-9 away. They are bad away from home.

Agree, getting to 20 wins is huge and is almost a lock for UT to get into the tourney. If we get to 19 but lose a tough one to ISU or WVU i think we might still get in

Only on the Internet is a seven seed better than a 6. Playing Tcu will hurt OUR RPI and SoS. We could lose, we could have a player get injured and it hurts the chance of turning around and winning the next day.

Chances are we won't get the 6 but can't understand not wanting it.

After thinking about the elbow to Taylor's mouth, I thought even an inadvertent elbow to the face was a foul. Was it because they were on the floor?

Agree. He was clearly trying to get to Holmes to pull him out of there. Glad the rest of the team stepped up in a big way.

Google is my friend. Answered my own question.

When there is a foul called and there may be a flagrant 2 foul for elbow contact above the shoulders of an opponent, permit a monitor review to determine the correct foul and permit the foul call to be changed to a flagrant 1 personal or common foul (including a player control foul ). When, upon review, it is discovered by indisputable evidence that there was no contact at all or that the contact was incidental, the foul call can be changed to no foul. When the officials use the monitor to review a situation that is NOT called on the floor, the only options are Flagrant 2, Flagrant 1 or no foul (when there was no contact).
Rationale: To provide officials the ability to use the monitor to enforce the correct penalty.

Can't see Texas getting in unless we have 20 wins and a really good showing in the Big 12 Tourney...( like semi-finals appearance ). Our record in the last weeks sucks and our record against quality teams is bad. I can't see the NCAA committee putting us in the dance. We are NIT bound......

We are not very good. We block shots etc, but do not play really great defense. Our offense is horrid. We have no real scorers from the perimeter ( streaky doesn't equate to good ). Our inside game sucks because we don't feed inside like we should and don't work to get guys open inside if we wanted to. Our bigs are not really good. Neither have the complete game to be a true beast inside. We either lack bulk, agility, quickness, or skill to put the ball in the hole when fouled. Then we have Rick who can't out coach a little dribblers team mom.....LOL ...With that combo we are NIT bound or one and done in the dance as a very low seed.

What we need is to go NIT and lose round one or not get invited at all, so Patterson will get us a new coach who can make us an elite team. Who that is I don't know, but I do know it ISN'T Rick Barnes.

Wow that's a lot of things we can't do and a lot of things we suck at...how did we ever win a game?! Maybe we should consider ourselves lucky to get into the NIT given how much you think we suck.

With our talent I think the NIT is a huge letdown. I will never hope we lose at anything, but I do think that we are not playing up to our potential. That falls on Barnes, and the only way to save his job is make the elite 8.

Texas' current RPI is 38. Since 2011, the only eligible major conference teams in the top 50 of the RPI to miss the tournament have been Missouri (No.49) and Minnesota (no 50). 94.5 percent of the 200 teams in the top 50 from 2011 to 2014 have made the tournament. Do you have some type of statistical analysis to back up your argument or are you just pulling a GBT?

A win against TCU/Tech will do very little to our RPI.

The point of beating TCU/Tech has nothing to do with RPI, it's getting to that 20th win. Could Texas get in with 19 wins, maybe so. Getting that 20th win is still important IMO ( a lot of people use that 20th win as a benchmark for tournament teams). Not only that finishing 3-1 as opposed to 2-1 looks much better on the resume.
