How would you rate them, today?

Yes, I know it will be hard to shake the Strong bias - since we know more about him than the others.  But, try anyway.

Here is my list - starting with my 1st choice:

1.  Patterson - the man is a pig, but can just flat evaluate, develop and coach.  TCU, people - predicted to win the Big 12 this year - nuff said.

2.  Strong - my kind of ethical coach.  The jury is still out on him at Texas, but I love what he did at Louisville.  I like his chances.

3.  Briles - yeah, I know he is a big cry baby - but can you deny that he knows offense?  And, can you deny he can recruit?

4.  Sumlin - don't sell him short - the man knows the 'hoods.  And he learned how to recruit them at UH.  Even the old moss backed, old army aggys like him - and are more than willing to pony up money for a mediocre coach, but great recruiter.

5.  Kingsbury - women seem to like him, but recruits are ho hum about him.  There is a 50% chance he will be gone after this year and an 80% chance he will be gone after next year..

Doc, I agree with all your evals except for Sumlin. IMHO, ESPN and the bias of the SEC are doing the bulk of the recruiting for Sumlin. Without them, Sumlin is mediocre compared to Strong and his crew.

Well, I agree the SEC seriously wants aggy to succeed in Texas and the Big 12 and they will do everything they can help them to that end.  Nothing would please the SEC more than to have the Big 12 fold - so they could cherry pick off teams at their leisure and reap the profits the vacuum would create.

I know it will never happen, but I would love to see the Big 12 band together and pre$ent $erious romantic overture$ to Arky and LSU.  They project to make $47M, each, in the next few years in the SEC, so I say up the ante to $55M ea. to each of them and watch them run like rabbits to the Big 12.  There are no greater whores than college administrators and loyalties and traditions be damned when it comes to the almighty dollar.  Yeah, I think they would bolt for sure.

That would certainly shake things up in the mighty SEC and put the Big 12 in the limelight as well.  At least as far as the networks.

I would replace Sumlin at #4 with Franchione at Texas State. To now, the only thing Sumlin can point to as success was three years ago. I wouldn't even list Kingsbury as to now, it's just disappointment.

They don't give out trophies for recruiting and even then, he lost some key battles against a school that went 6-7 and has no QB.

I think Sumlin is on the hot seat. The recruiting season saw a lot of that old alumni get riled up over losing the likes of Malik to Texas and having a legacy visit Austin. They also lost out on Hill and Boyd to a team they felt they were superior to in every way.

So IMO, both Sumlin and Kingsbury are on the clock. I don't see Kingsbury getting out of this but if Sumlin continues to have the same issues he's had (and done nothing about), he'll be gone.

Briles and Patterson are clearly top 2. What they have done with far less resources than most coaches is downright incredible.
Actually, Baylor has, arguably, more talent than the rest of the Big 12 - including OU.  Briles has had been stocking some really great classes the last couple of years.  Patterson, on the other hand, has made race horses out of mules.
