Aston isn't playing around

Charlie, send her out to close on some of ftball recruits....just kidding.....kinda
Aston is a great recruiter, but she made two fantastic hires. Travis Mays and Jalie Mitchell were two homerun hires when it comes to coaching and recruiting.

Not to mention the top 2 players in the country in the 2016 class (Lauren Cox and Joyner Holmes) were both in attendance at yesterday's game.

Would not surprise me if we land both of them.

This is the blueprint/ ideal for hiring a new coach to turn around a program that was waiting to come back to life.

The women's team tied for 8th in the Big 12 in Aston's first year.  Last year they tied for 3rd in the conference and won their first-round NCAA Tournament game.  Still a lot of basketball to be played but it looks as if these ladies will compete for a Big 12 championship if not a national championship this year.

i'll not pretend to be an expert on women's hoops, so i'll just jump on the bandwagon and enjoy the ride.

however, i DO remember, on another board i frequent, plenty of experts bemoaning her hiring as underwhelming.

could it be internet-guy isn't always right?

nah....

I always thought she was going to be a pretty good hire being the lineage she came from. I had no clue that she could recruit on this level.

When Aston was hired she said that she felt that they would be in the 'hunt" within three to four years - looks like they're right on schedule.

On another note I was a little curious as to what others had to say about her at the time she was hired (honestly I didn't pay much attention to the hire), here are a few quotes from an article that Rick Cantu wrote back in 2012 that I found very interesting.

"Karen is a culture-changer," said University of North Texas athletics director Rick Villarreal, who saw the Mean Green improve by 10 wins in Aston's one season at the school.

Charlotte senior guard Katie Meador, who starred at Marble Falls High School, said Aston had a profound impact on her basketball career.

"She was an amazing coach and motivator," Meador said. "She pushed me to my limits and instilled a work ethic within me that requires perfection in all areas of my life."

Doesn't sound all that different to Strong. I wonder if we're on to something here?
