John Burt to Texas

Just looked at his film in the article.  Some folks on another thread were comparing him to Roy Williams and wondering about his speed compared to Roy.  I do not know about that, but he sure has good awareness of where his body is and he goes up well for the ball.  Looks like he will be a good'un.

I'm really kinda torn about recruiting so many out-of-state players.

On the one hand, it's great that Strong & staff have good relationships in FL and the southeast.  Nice to fill in with quality players like Poona Ford, Andrew Beck, and now John Burt.  They seem like solid young men.

Playing devil's advocate, does anyone else worry about alienating THSFB coaches?  I mean, this is our state's flagship University.  All things being equal, I'd like to see TX players prioritized.  Yes, I know, fish where the fish are...Whatever it takes, right?

I'd rather not see more than 6 outsiders in each class, but I'm probably in the minority.

respectfully disagree.   i think that view is a bit too insular.  we suffered in the past from focusing too much on in state players in my view and the lack of hybrid vigor hurt us. 

i don't think we need to worry much.  the great majority of our recruits will always be from in state.

Maybe Mack was sold a few bad apples over the years due to his close relationships with THSFB coaches? I guess I shouldn't worry about it as long as they follow the 5 Core Values and represent The University with class.

Agree with you J.B., but the Texas HS kids have offers on the table as well. We could hold off till signing day and get screwed by noncommittal kids and not get anyone to fill certain positions. Maybe this will spur the locals to commit earlier to secure a place on the Horns roster?

J.B., your devil's advocate's position is well taken.  Right now, Coach obviously needs to take the best players he can find, where ever they are.  As his own staff's connections with Texas high school coaches settles in, I think that the emphasis will settle in to Texas players, but I really would like to see increased attention being given to national recruiting - it is just me, but I would not put a number on it.  Seems to me that even with increased attention being paid to out of state recruits, the numbers would vary over time.

It's great for Texas to have 3 Florida commitments. The Texas brand is nationwide, the recruiting should be as well.

Disagree. Just because there are alot of talented kids in Texas doesn't mean they deserve to wear burnt orange. It creates a sense of entitlement that started with Mack. Now it's time to recruit players who have earned the right to wear the longhorn.

JB, I am going to address your last statement first. Once a young man becomes a Longhorn, IMO, he is not an outsider!
Young men in Texas certainly have an advantage, if their coaches are supportive. If their coaches are not, then I hope the young man has great parents like Malik Jefferson and many of our commits. Otherwise, Coach Strong owes it to the guys who do commit to sign the best players possible, wherever they are.

Even with an increase in OOS recruiting, the Texas roster will always be 80% Texas kids. There isn't a HS coach in the state that will should complain about that.

Having said that, Beck is a Mack recruit all the way and Burt isn't signed yet. . . . 

Really happy we landed both Ford (will play right away) and Burt (yeah, I can see him playing as a true Freshman as well)

Texas will always be the primary recruiting area. Nothing wrong with going out of state and getting a few kids every year. UT, USC, Bama, FSU all do it.  I can see 20 Texas kids and 4 out of state kids every year.

I have said for years that Texas needs to cherry pick a few Florida kids. Very happy we are finally doing it.
