  1. HORN IN" On Franchise / Business Ownership a monthly post with blurbs, links, and other words-of-wisdom regarding self-employment; career transition; and franchise / business ownership; as well as information for business owners who may be interested in franchising their business. August 2019 Franchise Opportunity Knocks Self-employment Beckons Start answering the call right here. News you can use to help you find The right franchise / business opportunity for you. So many of our dreams at first seem impossible - then they seem improbable - and then - when we summon the will - they soon become inevitable. ~Christopher Reeve The Lesser Known Benefits of Franchising By LaShelle Taylor Risk taker! Fueled by passion! Visionary! These are some of the phrases that come to mind when we think of entrepreneurs. These are also true for people who open a franchise business, though I have to admit when most people picture an entrepreneur it’s of someone who created a new product like Apple or a service like Uber. The fact is while entrepreneurs take on more risk by starting from scratch, there are definitely perks to opening a franchise business. Other than a proven business model, franchisor support, etc., read below about some of the lesser known benefits of franchising. Behind Door #1: A Network of Peers When an entrepreneur comes up with a product or service idea, he or she may not have anyone to turn to for advice. After all, the reason for their business is to create something new. When someone considers buying a franchise, they are able to contact those who already own a similar business and ask them about the unknowns, the pitfalls, the glories. Furthermore, once they make that purchase and become a fellow franchisee, they can connect with other owners either during trainings with the franchisor, at annual events or simply by calling them up with a question. These kinds of relationships can ease stress when things get hectic or provide useful insights on everything from hiring new employees to the latest social media tips. Behind Door #2: Industry and Regulatory Updates While running a business day to day—whether cleaning windows, selling sandwiches, or providing in home care to seniors—it can be a real challenge to stay on top of the latest news in your industry. This is an important benefit of belonging to a franchise network. The franchisor most certainly should be aware of the happenings in your industry and should share that with you through regular communications and even offer solutions to any upcoming issues. For example, legislation at the national level might impact how much you pay your employees and you may not fully comprehend how to implement it. This is when you’re glad to be part of an organization with experts on staff diving into the data to help you seamlessly integrate whatever is necessary. Behind Door #3: Effortless Brand Awareness As a startup business, there isn’t much in the budget for PR and media. Maybe you are lucky and know a reporter who you can ask for some coverage, but you can’t count on that or that your connection can or will write about your business. The franchisor is busy keeping the brand in front of the public, so while you are making sure people get their sandwiches, have their windows cleaned effectively, or receive high-quality, home care services, the franchisor is talking with the national media. When there is a national ad placed or an article published, it represents you too and what you offer. Not only has this publicity taken no time out of your schedule, it’s yours to use in your local market and share on social media to increase brand awareness for you—and ideally help to grow your business. And the Grand Prize Goes To… Those willing to see the benefits of filling a need in their local community have the potential to build a successful business that can be passed on in their family, sold, or simply help them earn more for retirement. When considering whether a franchise business is right for you, it is critical that you understand the risks and the rewards. ENTREPRENEURSHIP… Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown Entrepreneur Defined… If this describes you or who you want to become, then take the next step. An entrepreneur is a person who will see the embryonic seeds of an opportunity well in advance of others. Others will eventually only see a lost opportunity. An entrepreneur will see risk as an opportunity. Others will see opportunity as a risk. An entrepreneur will look forward to the challenges and hard work that an opportunity will bring. Others will only see an uphill struggle. An entrepreneur will continue to work at that opportunity irrespective of set-backs, make mistakes, pick themselves up and learn from their mistakes. Others will give up the fight when the going gets tough. An entrepreneur will work outside of the normal business framework in order to feel free and unrestricted whilst others will have a need to build an even stronger framework in order just to feel safe. When the opportunity is finally realized, an entrepreneur will not say 'I told you so'. An entrepreneur will say to themselves not others, 'I knew I could do it'. Others will say, 'I wish I had done that'. Go confidently in the direction of your dream. Live the life you have imagined. -Henry David Thoreau- Custom Crafted Solid Concrete Boulder Monument Signage … The only franchised company in the United States that specializes in specialty enhanced custom crafted solid concrete boulder monument signage products. All the while, building a better future for your family, through business ownership. If that sounds good, this eSports franchise might be the perfect business opportunity for you. Capitalize on the booming eSports industry (41.3% growth!), positioned to exceed $1B in 2019 - Diversify your investment portfolio with a franchise business asset - Start a business while enjoying your current career - Generate and/or increase your residual income - Build a legacy to pass onto future generations Video games are now a legitimate high school sport One of the top eSports games, League of Legends, had tournament viewership peaking at 106.2 million people. That’s more than the Kentucky Derby, Wimbledon, Daytona 500, and the US Open combined. As a franchisee, you likely won’t be hosting tournaments as large as the League of Legends championship. However, there’s a large demand for locations to host smaller tournaments at the local level, and for locations for teams to practice. In San Antonio, the average Gen Z “athlete” plays video games as their “winter sport”. I know it sounds crazy, but UTSA is handing out scholarships to top players. If you have even the slightest interest in learning more, don’t wait, as territories are filling up fast. Nobody thought eSports would evolve this quickly, so there’s no telling where it could go from here. Any industry with 150 million potential customers offers great upside, but it’s rare to discover an industry that large with the opportunity to get in on the ground level. Over 150 million people play video games in the US, and the opportunity to monetize this group has exploded with the rise of eSports. Who would’ve thought - kids these days LOVE watching other people play video games, which has brought a lot of money into the industry through player-sponsorships from large companies; massive online streamed tournaments; and local tournaments and meetups like the ones we host at our eSports locations. Our proven model has already helped aspiring entrepreneurs open their own business and capitalize on this booming industry. We focus on the branding and marketing, so you can focus on the important parts of the business; developing a fun and safe environment for people to play video games. How Two NFL Retirees Are Tackling Their Challenges With A Strong Game Plan By Darren Heitner, Forbes David Garrard made a smooth transition from quarterback at an NFL team to quarterbacking as a franchise owner. Former NFL quarterback David Garrard has found personal success in life after football despite a lack of financial literacy obtained during his years in the NFL. Specifically, he chose to invest in the franchise industry and open up three Retro Fitness locations after an introduction from his financial advisor. He is not alone. Another six-year NFL veteran Jameel McClain, who now serves as Assistant Director of Engagement for the Baltimore Ravens, is invested in the same business as Garrard. "Franchising allows you to be your own boss and gives you a playbook that sets you up for success if you follow it," says Delancey Street CEO Max Soni, who knows the players as well as what it takes to be an entrepreneur, starting his first business at 17-years-old. Here is what the duo of NFL retirees have to share about being in the franchising business after successful careers as football players. Always have a game plan ready for your next move. After a six-year career playing a professional sport, Garrard knew that he liked having a set game plan to follow. This allowed him to always be looking forward and staying one step ahead. "There was never a training session, practice or game that I played that didn't involve a game plan," says Garrard. "My teams, collectively, followed the plan - feeling confident that it would always help us." A game plan can curb surprises and provide you with measurable benchmarks. These plans are fluid; they are amenable to change and should be modified depending on how things are progressing within your organization. You must be realistic about your capacity to get things done. "Look at the type of business you're considering getting into. Look at what you're going to ask from people," says McClain. "Once you do, look at what you're going to be required to push out as a result of asking people for something. If you can't put out what you've asked for or if you can own a gym and can't still mop the floors - then you can't put out. You have to be able to run all parts of the business - especially if the people you've asked to help out don't show up." People look for leadership. There is a difference between someone who can do the task and someone who can instruct another person to perform. You need to be realistic about who you are and what role(s) you perform best so that others will follow your lead. Active listening to experienced businesspeople is necessary to identify your blind spots. "I didn't know everything there is to know about the business of franchising; however, I chose to listen carefully to what those around me were teaching me about the world of business," says Garrard. "I was not hard headed. In this business, being hard headed isn't an option. Garrard and McClain both stress the importance of having a financial advisor you can trust, which goes hand-in-hand with what McClain says about trusting the team you choose to be surrounded by. "One thing I will say that has helped be successful and financially stable was that I worked with financial advisors before I entered the league, during my time in the league and after I left the league," says McClain. "With their help, we created a pyramid that would help me measure success throughout those times during my life. “Some men see things as they are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were, and ask why not. ” -Robert F. Kennedy "Everything Big Starts with Something Little" Excerpt from An Enemy Called Average by John Mason All successful people are faithful in the small things. There is power in taking small steps. Many people are not moving forward today simply because they were not willing to take the small step placed before them. If you have a dream to go into any particular area, you should leap at the opportunity—no matter how small—to move in the direction of your dream. For example: if you dream of being a college basketball coach and are sitting at home waiting for an invitation from Roy Williams at North Carolina University, you should know that call will never come. You need to find an opportunity to coach somewhere, anywhere. Find a young person, a young team. Jump in and coach with all of your heart, like you would if you were coaching at the highest level. Don’t be afraid to take small steps. There’s something powerful about momentum…no matter how small. Many times the impossible is simply the untried. I can remember a time in my life when I was immobilized with fear, consumed with what I was supposed to do. It seemed so huge a task; I was unable to bring myself to face it. A friend came to me and spoke two words that broke that paralysis in my life. He said, “Do something!” I’ll never forget that day…taking some small, seemingly insignificant steps. Momentum began to come into my life. If you are at a point of paralysis in your life because of what you feel you’re supposed to do, the words today are, “Do something!” Don’t worry about the long-term goal right now; just take the steps that take you past the starting point. Soon you’ll get to a point of no return. As you climb higher, you’ll be able to see much farther. As you begin, don’t be afraid. Eric Hoffer said, “Fear of becoming a ‘has-been’ keeps some people from becoming anything.” Every great idea is impossible from where you are starting today. But little goals add up, and they add up rapidly. Most people don’t succeed because they are too afraid to even try. As incredible as it sounds, they decide in advance they’re going to fail. Many times the final goal seems so unreachable we don’t even make an effort. But once you’ve made your decision and have started, it’s like you’re halfway there. Start—no matter what your circumstances. Take that first step! ********************************************************************************************* ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown ********************************************************************************************* Outdoor Living Spaces Concept · A more mature market, but still growing. · Provides variety with tangible and visible results. · Solve problems…figure out ideas / solutions…present creative concepts. · Involves degree of creativity. · Project management…planning. · Have fun. · Family friendly hours….flexibility…lifestyle. · Service Orientation…with value added. · Outdoor stuff. · Make things. 4. “HORN IN" On Franchise / Business Ownership a monthly post with blurbs, links, and other words-of-wisdom regarding self-employment; career transition; and franchise / business ownership; as well as information for business owners who may be interested in franchising their business. February 2018 Franchise Opportunity Knocks Self-employment Beckons Start answering the call right here. News you can use to help you find The right franchise / business opportunity for you. You desire to be self-employed… What is preventing you from moving towards that dream? Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.” Are you allowing your professional life to wander aimlessly, or stand still? Do you dislike your corporate job, but don’t know how to find your real niche in life? Every year, thousands of people dream of owning a business and are drawn to the independence, flexibility and freedom of being self-employed. The job market as we have known it continues to change, so people are retooling their vision of how they will make a living in the years to come. This is driving people of all ages and career types to pursue self-employment options, including small business ownership as the “new” career of choice. Today, creating your own job has become the new path to job security. Would this scenario be of interest and value to you… a process where you receive assistance to help you better identify your goals, financial requirements, lifestyle needs and what you would like for your work-life to look like; then provided information on self-employment options and guidance on exploring these opportunities within the confines of a safe and no-obligation environment. If you are ready, let’s discuss a methodical approach (not a one-time event) and an informative journey through the exploration / discovery process. A franchise / business opportunity may not be right for everyone and they are certainly not all created equal, but a good business model can lower the risk factor and accelerate one’s potential for long term success. The key is finding the right match between the franchise / business opportunity model and the owner-operator. A window of opportunity won’t open itself… Why Should I Utilize a Franchise Coach? There are many advantages to getting help from a professional who knows the inside workings of an industry or issue. Just having someone who can help interpret the jargon associated with a topic that is new to you can be a tremendous help. Most people wouldn’t go to court without a lawyer or purchase a home without the help of a realtor. A franchise coach can help you identify businesses that are closely aligned with your talents, interests and goals. Yes, you could spend months researching different options on your own, but you could be very diligent in your efforts and still miss the opportunity that is a fit for your objectives, lifestyle needs and investment requirements. The Internet is a valuable tool for research, but it is limited. If you do not know where to look or if you rely on search engines to produce the results, you will only find the companies that have paid to be listed high in the search rankings. High visibility on the Internet does not correspond to the relative value of a business opportunity. Due to the immense amount of data that is available on the Internet, it tends to create more questions than answers and it can be a frustrating experience. Due to the vast amount of data and information, relying solely on the Internet can be an over-whelming experience. And, when folks get over-whelmed…they usually quit. There are over 5,000 registered franchises and more than twice as many “Business Opportunities” or “Biz Ops” available today. A franchise coach can help you understand the difference between the types of opportunities so you can determine which format is right for you. Whether it is a franchise or Biz Op, there are many terrific choices and invariably there are some bad ones. A competent coach can help you focus on businesses that have met certain quality standards and help you avoid making a potentially big mistake. Coaches may not have current agreements with every franchise, but they can often obtain the listing if it meets your requirements as well as their own standards. The key advantage is that the agreements they do have are with solid, up and coming or established concepts that will meet the requirements of the new franchise buyer. One of the biggest challenges for franchise companies is finding entrepreneurs who will be a good fit for their particular business model. As you can imagine, franchisers get thousands of requests for their information packets, but most of these come from people who are not qualified or motivated to actually become a part of their organization. These companies generally cannot support the amount of staff necessary to do an effective job of bringing in new franchisees. This is why the value of a coach-referred candidate is so significant. The company is being introduced to a pre-screened individual who meets the basic requirements, is informed about the opportunity and is more than just casually interested. This saves the franchiser a great deal of time and money, so they pay a fee to the coach if the candidate buys a franchise. This creates a winning scenario for all parties involved. In the final analysis, the choice and the responsibility for researching the opportunity are yours, but as you contemplate such a huge decision, you should not leave any stones unturned. Getting help from an experienced coach is one of the best resources you can employ and since the seller pays the fee, the service is free to you. So, the question becomes: Why not use a coach? Are you in career transition, or contemplating making a change? Would you like a "sounding-board"? As a former Human Resources executive, Franchise Owner, and now a Franchise Coach / Consultant, I have over three (3) decades of assisting folks with career transition. Plus, I have personally walked down that path a couple times myself. If you would like to visit about career transition in general, entering self-employment via a franchise or business opportunity and / or UT sports, please call me at your convenience… 210-479-2491, or if outside San Antonio, 888-479-2491. My Story ******************************************************************************************** Can I Use My 401(k) to Start a Business? By Molly Klein – Benetrends Entrepreneurs have options when it comes to financing their small business dreams. Bank loans, grants, and help from family members are all options, but may not do the full job when it comes to providing needed startup funding. As seen in the article, Top 20 Web Resources for Business Newbies, there are multiple resources that can provide guidance and recommendations, including the use of existing retirement savings as a funding source. This article explores how this option works. How Does Using 401(k) Funding for Startups Work? The Rollovers as Business Startups (ROBS) plan lets you use existing qualified retirement account funds, such as a 401(k), 403(b) or IRA, to fund your business without accruing taxes, debt, or penalties. What Steps Do I Need to Take? Using retirement funds for your startup involves four key steps. When working with an established, experienced partner, you can be sure each step is done correctly and you have your funds quickly. Step 1: Establish a C Corporation. Your new business needs to be established as a C Corporation, which has tax advantages that allow for the use of retirement funds with the right legal structure. Read "The Ups and Downs of Using a C Corporation". Step 2: Create a New Retirement Plan. You need to establish a new qualified retirement plan in the new corporation to avoid withdrawal penalties and maintain a tax-deferred status. A Benetrends retirement plan expert will work you to understand your long- and short-term goals and structure the retirement plan accordingly. Step 3: Transfer Retirement Funds. After the new plan is designed, a plan custodian is designated. The custodian creates the new retirement account and helps with the rollover of funds from your existing retirement account. Step 4: Launch the New Business. Once your retirement funds are in place in the new account, they can be invested into stock in your new company. If you designate an investment in the company from among the plan’s holdings, the plan buys stock, giving you the capital required to buy or start running your company. What Are the Major Advantages? Using retirement funds for startup costs has several major advantages, including: Tax Benefits. Under the ROBS plan, you maintain tax-deferred status and do not face any early withdrawal penalties. Flexibility. The funds can be used for many different purposes. The money can be used against cash requirements for a Small Business Administration loan, to pay franchise fees, build or renovate a site, or buy equipment. You can even use the funds to pay yourself a salary. You do not need to use all the funds you’re transferred, either. Ease and Speed. In some cases, you can get access to your funds in as little as 10 days. Accessing your funds does not depend on your credit score or having a completed business plan. Peace of Mind. Using your retirement plans means you are not incurring additional personal debt or having to negotiate with lenders for needed funding. Please call me if you have questions. I can provide assistance and additional information regarding 401ROBS plans, as well as other funding equipment leasing options. ********************************************************************************************* ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown **************************************************************************************** Coffee Cafe Business Opportunity Coffee Café / Coffee Concept… Not a Franchise. What’s Your Wish? The White Envelope... It's just a small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name, no identification, no inscription. It has peeked through the branches of our tree for the past 10 years or so. It all began because my husband hated Christmas---oh, not the true meaning of Christmas, but the “craziness” of Christmas – where he had a tendency to sit back and do WAY too much thinking, about his future, his family, what he wanted to be when he grew up, so to say. Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to do something for him. The inspiration came in an unusual way – I was watching a magician on television doing a “trick” when it struck me… I asked him to write down for me, every New Year’s Day, what he wanted from his life. It didn’t matter what he put down – this was for him. And I didn’t want to see it. Then, every Thanksgiving weekend, when we put up the Christmas tree, I’d ask him to open it and see what it said. And then I’d ask him, “Are you closer to reaching it? If not, what can I do to help?” After a couple of years of this, my husband turned to me and said, “Yes, you can help. You see – I want to own my own business. I’ve always realized I could build equity for our family better this way – plus get away from the corporate nonsense I deal with every day. But if we do this, we’re going to have to tighten our belts in the short-term. Are you ready to help?” I nearly keeled over from shock. I had become accustomed to our nice little life – and knowing my husband was able to make a good salary and support our family well. I worked as well, but was also busy with the kids, so we depended largely on his salary. “What are you considering?” I asked, trying to sound supportive. “Well, I’m looking at buying a franchise,” he said. “I’ve been working with a franchise consultant, and he has helped me understand my skills and what franchise companies would be right for me. I’m in the process of investigating several right now – and one, in particular, is looking like a really good fit for us.” “Oh. Crap,” I mumbled, and then quickly began thinking of ways I could submarine this radical thinking that was going to destroy the security of our family. “Have you spoken with your Dad about this?” “Yes, I have,” my husband said, “and he asked me if I had the ‘stuff’ to make it work?” “Well, do you?“ I asked. “I don’t know,” my husband replied, “but I DO know that if I don’t see this through, I’ll never be happy, because I will have never seen through what I thought I could do with myself in life.” “Well, obviously this is important to you.” I offered. “Let’s share it with family when they’re here for the holidays – and see what they have to say,” hoping in my heart they’d help me out on this issue. “We can do that,” he said, “but I don’t need another WIPE-OUT. You know, WELL-INTENTIONED PERSONS OFFERING UNINFORMED THOUGHTS? My Dad has been doing that to me my whole life. It took me years to understand that he didn’t mean me harm, but that he wished for my safety, and that suggesting I avoid risk was his way of doing it.” “I’ve already spoken with a lot of people,” he went on to say. “And I’ve learned that once you begin to talk about your desires to own your own business, you will get all sorts of comments back that don’t always reflect an understanding of who you really are, and certainly don’t reflect a knowledge of the business you are investigating. Be it your father, or your “know-it-all” sister-in-law, or your neighbor, or your co-worker. They all seem to have an opinion. I have learned I needed to understand two things. First, as I said, I’ve learned that my loved ones have my “safety” at heart – not my “success” – so they are hardly in the position to advise me to do something that would put me or my family at any risk at all. Secondly, many can make a comment that may appear to have my best interest at heart, but that person doesn’t have the details I have in investigating a business. I guess I’ve learned this is something I simply have to do on my own. Wow, I thought. He’s got me pegged. “OK, then what can I do here?” “Join me in this investigation process,” he requested. “Work with me to learn about these businesses. And then we can decide together – if this one particular business isn’t right, it won’t change how I feel. I still want to do this.” Well, we did exactly what he asked me to…and 7 years ago, we purchased a franchise business together. It has met his personal fulfillment needs – and neither of us has ever regretted a minute. But why still the “white envelope,” you say? Do I still have him fill it out every year? “No, I don’t. These days it is no more than an empty envelope. But it’s a constant reminder to me to that I almost “blew it. That I was thinking about what I thought was right for me, not for my husband, or for our family. And that reminder is the best message I can receive every holiday”. **************************************************************************************** Every year, thousands of people dream of owning a business and are drawn to the independence, flexibility and freedom of being self-employed. Their primary focus will be Acquisition/Conversions of existing check cashing stores with good cash flow. They have an opportunity now with the rapid expansion in the size of their market along with the consolidation going on in their industry, to pick up good stores with strong cash flow. The type of candidate that is suitable for these types of opportunities will have a strong net worth ($500K+) and good liquidity (minimum of $100K+ in cash or cash-convertibles). The company’s business focus will be primarily along the East Coast, the Midwest, and the Southwest (Texas). This franchise is the closest thing to owning a neighborhood branch bank. We have a bank look and feel, and we offer a full menu of financial services to the "un-banked" or "under-banked" customer, typically a middle-income working family. Our services include check cashing, money orders, wire transfer, electronic bill payment, tax-preparation services, short-term loans, and a low to middle income mortgage program. We are located in attractive suburban strip centers close to the customer's home or work. The underlying business model is exceptional, providing good income and high return on investment. Our only inventory is cash, and we open and close our teller stations daily just like a bank. The business can be run with one to two people, and the owner can bring on a manager to run the store once the business is ramped up. We are doing acquisitions (for candidates who prefer an existing cash flow), new stores, and a "store in a store" kiosk concept that can go inside of an existing business (convenience store, grocery store, tax prep office, etc.). We offer single units, multiple units, and area development on a selective basis. Our typical candidate is an upper level corporate executive making a good income and with reasonably strong net worth, or an entrepreneur that is selling their business and looking to get into something else, or diversify into another business. The current economic climate is actually conducive to our business, and this presents an opportunity for candidates to open and build a successful business. This business operates like a branch bank for the ever -growing market of individuals that live “pay check to pay check” and depend on their services. Cash Investment: $100,000. Total Investment: $200,000 - $500,000+ depends on the acquisition. Average # of Employees: 2. They are so unhappy that 71 percent also said that they are looking to change employers. So what gives? Two big reasons are cited, according to this report in The Ladders. Employers, the study found, are not giving the recognition that most employees want. Forty-five percent of respondents said they “rarely or never” get the money they deserve and 44 percent believe that they are “always or often” overlooked. Sixty-four percent say their supervisors don’t give them enough support and a majority of the participants are resentful of their co-workers. So much for teamwork. The study also shows that most employees are just plain stressed out. Almost two-thirds of those who responded believe that their job is having “a significant impact on their mental and behavioral health,” and 63 percent said that they have “always, often or sometimes” taken part “in unhealthy behaviors such as drinking or crying regularly.” All of these job stresses – brought on by unreasonable employer demands and excessive responsibilities – are cited as potential reasons approximately 120,000 workplace deaths occur annually, according to researchers at both Harvard and Stanford universities. Too much stress in the work environment may also be contributing to increased absenteeism as well as mental and behavioral problems. “We know that employees who are over stressed and under-supported can significantly impact the people around them and a company’s success,” Paul Gionfriddo, president and chief executive of Mental Health America, told The Ladders. Will changing jobs fix these problems for an employee, when so many already seem unhappy? That’s up for debate. ******************************************************************************************************************** Today, many people dread going to work. It is estimated that as many as 80% of the working population is dissatisfied with their jobs…and 71% are looking for another job. For these folks, going to work is a chore. Did you know the average person will spend over 90,000 hours at work over their lifetime? Wow, that’s a long time to be unhappy. If you are going to quit, for heaven’s sake, don’t go to work for another pathetic firm. Do something wild: Kiss your boss goodbye and become self-employed… start your own business; or buy a business, franchise or business opportunity. If you have had enough, become your own boss. The money you have made for others now shifts to yourself. Whether you are an engineer, a programmer, a salesman, a teacher, an accountant, a whatever, start today planning your escape from corporate prison. Do you really want another JOB…or, do you prefer an improved lifestyle? Can you continue to do what you are doing now, at the same intensity that you are doing it, for the next 10, 20, or 30 years? Do you really want to? Does Your Life In Corporate America Seem Like You Are Standing On The Ledge? Today, many people would answer “Yes” to that question. Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.” Are you allowing your professional life to wander aimlessly, or stand still? Dislike your corporate job, but don’t know how to find your real niche in life? Presently have a demanding JOB, but prefer to have a LIFE? Desire is to own your business…with more flexibility, financial success and independence? Fed up with your job…ready to be your own boss? “Burned-out” from corporate America? Prepared to take “real” control of the future for you and your family? Eager to infuse excitement back into your work-life? Content with your present job, but don’t have a back-up plan if the unthinkable happens? Ready to change the future by controlling your destiny, rather than having it dictated by someone else? Blake Mallen, a very successful entrepreneur, once told me, “The moment you stop doing what you think you are supposed to do, and start doing what you were meant to do, is when the script ends and life begins”. Is it time for you to break from the script and go after a life that offers you greater flexibility, freedom and independence? Studies show that 82% of Americans say they would like to own their own business. But, only 5% will ever realize this dream. Perhaps that can be best explained by a quote from Brian Tracey. Mr. Tracey has said, “A thousand dreams die unborn every day because the dreamer lacks the courage to take the first step”. Please allow me to describe a common scenario…You are ready for a career change-you get the urge to tell your boss what she / he can do with the latest company policy. The reality of corporate life is becoming more painful …job security is an illusion…your work-life and income is being dictated by someone else…your employer isn’t investing in your future. Now, your brain is on a mental trampoline and you exclaim, “Well, why don’t I invest in myself?” Then, your mind begins to race back and forth between the known reality of the uncertain life in corporate America, and the unknown aspects of how you can get independence through business ownership. Do you have a dream to be self-employed…to own you own business? Does this dream inspire you, energize you, and stir your inner drive to do everything you can to achieve it? Perhaps the most important question is, “How will you achieve your dream”? The answer to this question is imperative because “it is the reason” most people never realize their dream. Too often franchise business owner "wannabes" simply lose their focus and drift away. These people who really want to own a business don’t ever get to enjoy this wonderful experience because they allow the "FUD (Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt) Factor" to grow, fester and steal their dream. They have no guidance or strategy in place, no knowledge of what is needed and must be sometimes sacrificed to have the dream come true. Most people have no idea how to achieve their dream of becoming a business owner. They don’t know what type of business is right for them, where or how to start the process. So, most people simply get overwhelmed with fear, uncertainty and doubt. And, when people are unsure as to what, how, and when, they STOP. The paragraph above could have described me in 2001. From an early age, I always wanted to be self-employed, but after spending 25 years in corporate Human Resources roles, I had no idea how to achieve my dream. I possessed a belief that there was a business that would provide a better lifestyle for me…out there somewhere. But, I didn’t know how to get from here (corporate employment) to there (The Dream). I was feeling over-whelmed and fearful. But, I didn’t stop. Instead, I obtained the services of a franchise consultant who guided me through the process. And, as is often said, “the rest is history…” Owning a business opportunity (“biz-op”) or a franchise may be the right solution for you too. It is the opportunity to be in business for yourself, but not by yourself. Franchises have a much greater success rate compared to independent new businesses. Contrary to non-franchised businesses, they offer a successful concept and an effective business model with a stable track record; you don’t have to “reinvent the wheel.” They provide complete business operating systems, access to the franchisor’s expertise, training, name recognition, tested sales, marketing systems, operation simplicity, and continual support. Additionally, the benefits of networking with other successful franchisees are invaluable. Franchises are everywhere today. Financial experts believe franchising is the “wave of the future.” Within 10 years, franchises could comprise over 50% of the retail and service sectors. This expectation is based on the underlying concept-Franchises offer aspiring business owners the greatest success potential, with the least amount of risk. Franchises present countless opportunities for successful ownership and financial independence. In U.S. and world economies, franchising is creating greater avenues for wealth accumulation among both franchisees and franchisors. As existing franchise systems become more successful, new franchises will be developed and introduced to the market. In today’s market, thousands of franchise opportunities are available - just about everything from advertising to maid services to weight control. The franchisor knows the business, so industry experience is not required. Franchisors seek franchisees possessing customer service, business and management skills. Franchises have proven to be an effective vehicle for successfully transitioning into a new industry and self-employment with an improved quality of life, while becoming the master of your own destiny. ******************************************************************************************************************** You desire to be self-employed… What is preventing you from moving towards that dream? The Correct Answer was Coffee – a surprise to the quartet playing, who chose cellphones. [Actually, UT Sports was not on the game show’s list. I stuck it in there to keep you reading. It is a business opportunity, so allows much more operational flexibility than a franchise… and does not impose restrictions on how the business should be run. 1) Far less expensive than all other coffee franchises 2) No royalties 3) No restrictions on how the business is run 4) Café owners set their hours of operation/days open 5) Ability to grow the business through co-branding Attractive leasing package available to qualified candidates for the furniture, fixtures & equipment package. By Brian Tracy Many years ago I began asking the question, “Why is it that some people are more successful than others?” The most important answer surprised me, as it surprises most people. It is simple. Your success is based on what you do, the results you get, and how quickly and efficiently you achieve those results. It is not based on what you say, wish, hope, or intend to do at some time in the future. Success is only based on what you are doing right now in this moment. As Henry Ford said, “You can't build a reputation on what you're going to do.” So how do you get more done and become more successful? Just Shut Up and Do It! Fully 95 percent of what you do, or fail to do, is determined by your habits. Your actions are determined by your habits of belief—the way you are programmed as a result of your lifetime of experience—and your habits of behavior—what you are accustomed to doing or not doing. The biggest obstacle to success is that people have negative habits, sometimes unconsciously, that hold them back, year after year, from realizing their full potential. The good news is that all habits, first of thought and then of behavior, are learned. Because your habits are learned, they can be unlearned, and replaced with new, positive, constructive habits that enable you to get going, keep going, and do great work that gets you paid more and promoted faster. DEVELOP NEW, BETTER HABITS Habits are developed by taking in new information that’s either positive or negative for us and then repeating actions based on that information until actions become automatic. Once the habit is locked in you respond automatically, neither questioning nor explaining to yourself what you have decided to do. The worst habits of all are based on your self- limiting beliefs. These are areas where you believe yourself to be limited in some way even though it may not be true. But as a result, you act as if it was true and it then becomes true for you. The old saying is, “You are not what you believe you are, but what you believe, you are.” Challenge Your Beliefs The starting point of greater success is for you to take some time to challenge the automatic assumptions you make that may be holding you back from success. Some people believe they are lacking in intelligence because they didn’t get good grades in school. Then they find out that some of the most successful people in the most complex industries also did poorly in school. Some people are unsuccessful because they do not believe they are creative, self- disciplined, good time-managers, punctual, or capable of learning and applying new things. They say, “That’s just the way I am.” They actually think that this is a reason for not growing and improving. The fact is that most self- limiting beliefs are not true. They are based on information that you have taken in; sometimes they come from the opinions or criticisms of others, sometimes from something as simple as reading your horoscope. The Brake on Your Potential The worst of all self-limiting beliefs is the fear of failure. This is the fear of loss, poverty, mistakes, or not achieving a goal that you have set for yourself. People who are preoccupied with the fear of failure continually look for reasons why something cannot be done, why it’s a bad idea, or why they may lose their time and money. The fear of failure, like all fears, paralyzes behavior, clouds thinking, and causes a person to feel like the proverbial deer in headlights. TAMING ELEPHANTS In my seminars, I often ask, “How do you train an Indian elephant?” At one time, Indian elephants were the “battle tanks” of the Maharajas. Not only did they carry boxes of bowman and spear throwers on their backs, but they were also violent and aggressive, attacking the enemy and impaling them on their sharpened tusks. They were so terrifying and fearless that enemy armies would run away when they were confronted by these elephants. Today, these same elephants are beasts of burden. They calmly and peacefully plow the fields, haul logs, do what their masters tell them to do, and then stand around quietly in their corrals, waiting for the next day and more work. They have completely lost their ferocity and their ability to strike fear into the heart of the enemy. How did this happen? The Training Begins When the elephant was a baby the owner would take the little elephant away from its mother and tie its leg with a strong rope to a post driven deep into the ground. The baby elephant would struggle and try to get away to get back to its mother, crying and bleating and protesting. But to no avail. The rope around its leg was too strong and the post was driven too deep. Eventually, the baby elephant would give up struggling. Each day, the owner would take the baby elephant away and tie it to a post for several hours. In almost no time at all, the baby elephant would accept that, when it was tied to a post, it was helpless. The baby elephant developed the greatest malaise of the modern world, what psychologists call learned helplessness. .The Elephant Gives Up When the elephant grew up into a five-ton beast, the largest land animal in the world, all the owner had to do was tie a rope the size of a dog leash around the elephant’s leg and it would immediately become passive and stop moving or struggling. The owner could then tie the other end of this rope to a tent post driven a few inches into the ground. The elephant, capable of breaking through fences and knocking down houses, would simply stand and wait quietly until the owner came back to take him to work. As children, the same thing happens to us. At an early age, our parents begin to say to us words like “No!” or “Stop that,” or “Get away from there!” or “Don’t touch that!” Sometimes the parent would back up these words with spanks or other kinds of physical punishment. The growing child would soon start to feel small, incompetent, incapable, weak, and afraid to try anything new or different. THE ROOT OF HELPLESSNESS Most people have had these childhood experiences. Just like the elephant, when you grow up whenever you are confronted with something new, different, unexpected, or unsure your natural reaction is the same, “I can’t! I can’t! I can’t!” This fear of failure then holds you back from trying new things, taking risks, moving out of your comfort zone, and thinking outside the box. Instead of thinking of all the ways you could benefit and grow from trying or doing something different, you only think of the possible downside and the negative things that might happen. Like the Indian elephant, you become passive. This is the state of mind of fully 80 percent of the population. SET BIG GOALS Here’s a question for you: Would you like to be happy, healthy, popular, thin, and rich? Most people say, “What a dumb question! Of course I would like to be happy, healthy, popular, thin, and rich.” You think you do, but in your heart of hearts you probably don’t believe that it’s possible for you. How can you tell? By looking at what you are doing. If you sincerely want to achieve these great goals, you would be out there working on them all day every day and nothing could stop you from achieving them. YOUR ACTIONS TELL THE TRUTH It is not what you say, wish, hope, or intend that matters, it is only what you do. Your actions on an hour by hour, minute by minute basis tell you and everyone around you who you really are and what you really want. You are what you are and where you are today because of all of your previous choices up until now. You cannot change the past, but you can change the future. You can accomplish more and different things in the future by making better choices in the present. THE KEY TO SUCCESS Since 95 percent of what you do, positive or negative, is determined by your habits, the secret to creating a wonderful future for yourself is to develop new habits that are consistent with the person you want to be and the things you want to accomplish. The truth is that bad habits are easy to form but hard to live with. Good habits are hard to form but easy to live with. The wonderful discovery is that once you develop a new, positive, life-enhancing habit, it soon becomes automatic and easy. It even becomes harder to revert to a negative habit than to practice a better one because of the feelings of happiness and personal satisfaction that the new habit gives you. ********************************************************************************* You desire to be self-employed… What is preventing you from moving towards that dream? ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown ********************************************************************************* The following concept is a business opportunity and is not a franchise. It is a sales and project management oriented light manufacturing business. Of all the concepts I have presented to my clients, this is my most favorite. I really like this business and organization. It validates extremely well and provides an opportunity to grow a large business from one location, rather than buying multiple territories. This business opportunity is unique in several different ways. One of the ways is how they are operated. 60% are solely owned by a male. 6% are solely owned by a female. 33% are owned and operated by a husband & wife. This is an unusually large percentage for the Franchise / Business Opportunity world, which is due to the fact that the couple can manage completely different projects and aspects of the business. 1% are owned and operated by partners, including father-daughters, siblings, and general partnerships Our economy has for generations been fueled by manufacturing, both heavy and light. Light manufacturing is an environment with no loud noises, no noxious odors, no dangerous chemicals, and no dangerous equipment. Much of the light manufacturing over the years has gone overseas due to economics. Some manufacturing remains here due to different factors including; technology, unique raw materials, the need to be close to the customer, or the custom nature of small run production. Many individuals in our economy come from the world of manufacturing and have the desire to make a product from raw materials. They like the processes involved in manufacturing. They like the tangible results of what they have made. They like the single location nature of the industry, the regular hours it operates, the project scheduling, the ability to acquire the property in which they are located, and they understand the resale value of a manufacturing business. Picture yourself in a manufacturing business where your staff makes a product from raw materials. Its custom production, so every day is different, and you will see tangible, visible results of your efforts driving home. It’s close to home, in a low overhead, business park location, operating Monday-Friday 9-5 (no nights, weekends, or holidays) with a small staff of career employees. There are no loud noises, noxious odors, or dangerous chemicals, even have carpeting on the floor. It’s a relationship business with repeat customers, where 30 of those customers can equal 75-80% of your revenue. Many of those customers may be regional, national and even international in scope. It’s a non-cash transaction business (check and charge), so when you are out seeing customers, you don’t have to worry about who’s holding the money. When you are ready to sell, it will sell for a greater multiple of cash flow than most business models because of the manufacturing sector you are in, the small core of repeat customers, and the profit margins obtainable due to the custom nature of the business. This concept is a light manufacturing business opportunity ….manage a light manufacturing business to achieve a high equity return. This business has evolved and changed over the years due to advancements in technology and new materials. It's personable, creative, rewarding and ideal for people-oriented individuals who have the desire to learn how to manage a sales and production business. The ongoing support and training provided along with state-of-the-art equipment will leave the competition behind. But most importantly, you own your business entirely and there are no royalties. Presently, there are 300+ of these businesses in the U.S. and Canada. B2B operation, typically M-F, 9:00 to 5:00. Enjoy a flexible and active lifestyle… An operation in San Antonio closes on Friday at 2:00 pm. Some are only open M-Th and are closed on Friday. About 75% are closed the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Approximately 95% are closed on the Friday after Thanksgiving. About 33% are owned & operated by a husband & wife team. Their business system allows husbands and wives to easily find a role / niche that is compatible with their respective interests / skills and still provide some work separation. Very few of the franchise / business concepts available today, truly provide an effective business work environment for a husband – wife team. B2B rather than B2C resulting in larger sales transactions, with less emotional purchasing decisions. It is scalable…only need (1) location to grow a nice business. Provides growth opportunity at lower investment cost through one (1) unit. Requires only a few “career-type” employees…you have greater control and less managerial hassle. Owner can handle the sales, or hire outside sales person(s). Project management type business…manage process & employees. Client Relationship … Consultative Sales>>>Service business>>>Repeat Business with 80% of Gross Sales Coming from Less than 30 Customers… This is a “relationship” business. Manufacturing businesses have the highest resale value…build equity for retirement. Every business is a potential customer. Business has synergistic opportunities with other operations. Your operation does not have to manufacture all of the different products. You can take an order from one of your customers and farm out the work to another operator and both make money on the sale. Business is not limited to your local area…you may have customers in other parts of the U.S. or the world. Business located in the XYZ area, but can sell and market product anywhere in the world. Ideal for people-oriented individuals who possess good interpersonal, communication and project management skills. Custom production providing opportunity for creativity. Producing a tangible product. Every customer and job is different. Oversee production from beginning to end. A business that provides creativity and innovation, coupled with repetition. Don’t get stuck in the office all day. Provides the environment for a combination of “inside” work tasks with “outside” marketing / sales activity. Company provides their owners a two (2) year Sales & Marketing program. Their sales program is based on “relationship building” and turning your satisfied customers into an external sales force. Company has a 29+ year history of growth and success. 8. “HORN IN" On Franchise / Business Ownership …a monthly post with blurbs, links, and other words-of-wisdom regarding self-employment; career transition; and franchise / business ownership; as well as information for business owners who may be interested in franchising their business. July 2017 Franchise Opportunity Knocks Self-employment Beckons Start answering the call right here. News you can use to help you find The right franchise / business opportunity for you. What’s so Great About a Franchise? Many people dream of owning their own business. It sounds fun and exciting, and it truly can be. However, there are different types of business ownership that come with different perks and pitfalls. Independent Startups, for example, involve huge commitments: finances, time, and energy. Frankly, these startups depend on luck more than any other business model. It is high-risk, high-reward, but if the business fails, the losses can be devastating. This is why so many employees wishing to break away from the daily grind of a job tend to shy away from venturing out on their own to be their own boss. With no disrespect to startups that made it—Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, etc.—much of the success of these big names involved a large amount of good fortune. Of course, there were genius entrepreneurs behind them, and whatever they did, it worked, but not everyone has the resources, nor are they willing to risk it all on a new business or new idea. In most cases, that is a wise decision. Unfortunately, many people wishing to be their own boss are afraid to become business owners because they immediately equate business ownership with the startup. This perception is analogous to avoiding the ocean because you are afraid of Jaws. If you’re interested in becoming a business owner but can’t fathom starting from scratch, franchising is an excellent solution. In fact, Brad Sugars, owner of the world’s No. 1 business coaching firm in the world, strongly recommends franchising as a first, or even second or third business for the new entrepreneur. Why franchising? “It offers the right mix of independence and proven strategy,†Sugars said, “It has the strength of a tried-and-true business model with the freedom that comes from working for yourself and managing your individual franchise, within certain parameters, as you see fit.†Furthermore, there are thousands of franchise opportunities available, franchising is becoming more popular than ever, and the investment can be relatively small, depending on what type of franchise you choose. Most importantly, of all significant business models, the franchise is the least likely to fail because it is strongly backed by the franchisor, who offers support and has a vested interest in the success of each individual franchise. Furthermore, franchising, as a general business model is expected to continue to grow steadily in 2017 and on. In the course of my business, I am often asked “When I buy a franchise, what do I get for my money?†The short answer is “a business model.†A business model is a framework for creating economic value, in other words, it’s a system for making money. Many first time entrepreneurs confuse the investment in a franchise as a purchase of physical property, when what a franchise represents is intellectual property. The capital equipment, inventory, furnishings, fixtures or the cost of building out the location is part of any business be it franchised or not. The real value in a franchise is that you get a fully formed, proven business model. An effective business model is the difference between success and failure in a business. The old maxim that most businesses fail because they are under-capitalized needs more adequate explanation. Most of these businesses wouldn’t have been considered under-capitalized if they would have had an adequate business plan. Every year thousands of well capitalized startups with brilliant ideas for a product or service fail. This not for lack of money, it is because they eventually burn up all of their cash while trying to develop a system for delivering their product / service into the hands of a paying customer. All business models are initially perfected by trial and error – this is a very costly process that most small businesses cannot afford to live through. That is why so many private startups fail where franchises succeed. The costs associated with perfecting a business model will almost always eclipse the cost of paying a franchise fee. The average franchise fee is about $35k. Most starts up waste more than that in advertising costs alone while they experiment with different marketing strategies. The advantages of having the learning and cost curves reduced to a fraction of the “learn as you go†method, are very significant to say the least. The other cost component of a franchise is the royalty. This is a fee paid for on-going support which of course includes continuous improvement of the business model, access to vendor discounts, product R&D, marketing and advertising programs, etc. Typical support royalties are between 6% and 8% of revenue. This fee usually pays for itself due to the savings realized when the franchisee purchases goods and services for the business at below market, national account rates. Additionally, most franchisees will experience much higher sales than they would as a private company – greatly in excess of 8% higher - because of the franchisor’s well designed marketing strategy. A franchise may not be right for everyone and they are certainly not all created equal, but a good business model can lower the risk factor and accelerate one’s potential for long term success. As always, the key is finding the right match between the franchise model and the owner-operator. Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.†Are you allowing your professional life to wander aimlessly, or stand still? So… Chasing Corporate Employment Is, In Reality, A Bigger Risk Than Owning A Franchise. Studies show that 82% of Americans say they would like to own their own business. So, why do so few who say they want business ownership finally end up owning a business? There are a number of reasons. One primary reason is the misconception regarding the security of corporate employment. With all the layoffs in 2008-2009 and still occur on a more limited basis, it makes one question job security. With companies downsizing, rightsizing and even capsizing, there is no security, except that which you create for yourself. Over the past several years, many individuals have found it increasingly difficult to keep their job and / or secure other suitable employment. Particularly, those who may be more “matureâ€, or have been at a high income level. A number of my friends and / or former associates from my previous life in corporate America lost their jobs and career when they were in their mid 50s. Almost all are either unemployed or grossly under-employed. Several years ago when my wife was 59 years old, she lost her human resources job at the company where she had been a loyal and dedicated employee for 20+ years. Today, she is under-employed and working at a wage rate about 55% of her former salary. Make no mistake, corporate loyalty is a one-way street. And, job security behind the corporate curtain is a myth. The work-place and labor market are in a state of flux…they are transforming the nature and make-up of jobs. The Federal government and a number of leading economists have reported that most of the jobs that have been “cut†are not likely to return. The job market today exhibits three (3) frustrating and consistent themes… High paying jobs are increasingly hard to find. The average job lasts 18-24 months… So, how much security is being provided by corporate employment? Executives are being asked to do substantially more with fewer resources. As the 21st century job market continues to constrict, people are retooling their vision of how they will make a living in the years to come. This is driving young people, mid-career types, those who are transitioning out of corporate America jobs, as well as stay-at-home mothers who would like to go back to work, to pursue self-employment options. Therefore, a number of these folks have decided to pursue small business ownership as the “new†career of choice. Today, creating your own job has become the new path to job security. Perhaps you have the perfect job and perfect life, but do you have a back-up plan if the unthinkable happens? And, if you are presently employed…can you continue to do what you are doing now at the same intensity for the next 10, 20, or 30 years? Do you really want to? You may want to infuse some excitement back into your work-life. There is a book written by John Ortberg, If you want to walk on water, you’ve got to get out of the boat. The “boat†is what you hang on to, or whatever represents safety and security to you and that which pulls you away from the high adventure you actually seek. For many, moving towards the dream of being a business owner is simply letting go of the boat we call “corporate Americaâ€. What it really entails is going after what you were made to do, leaving the illusory lifeboat behind and setting sail for uncharted waters. Owning your own business may provide the opportunity for you to reach your goals and for some, it may be their only viable option in our current economy. And, buying a franchise provides the opportunity to be in business for yourself, but not by yourself. A franchise already has a proven concept and an effective business model with a stable track record. Therefore, you gain access to a successful business concept without having to “reinvent the wheel.†Franchise ownership has proven to be a great vehicle for thousands of people to effectively transition into a new industry and self-employment with an improved quality of life, while becoming a master of their destiny. Whether they have been fired, downsized, retired, or just want to be their own boss, they all have the same thought…â€There must be something better!†Business ownership / self-employment is not the right avenue for everyone. For those folks who are truly ready and capable of being a business owner, they must determine the business model that will best fit their goals and needs. The most common business models are independent business; franchise; and business opportunity. Below are brief descriptions of the different types of franchises and business opportunity. Single-unit Franchises…A franchisee has the right to operate one franchise unit. Most franchisees enter the world of franchising by owning one unit. It is a great way to get in and understand the system before taking on more units. Territory: The franchisee may have a small radius of exclusive territory to operate within. If it is a retail store, the area of exclusivity may be a two or three mile radius around the store. If it is a home-based business the area may consist of a few specific zip codes. Level of participation: The franchisee is very involved with almost all operations of this type. Even if it is a semi-absentee owned business, the franchisee will want to be present at the business and be as hands-on as possible. Typical liquid capital required: $25,000 to $60,000 initial out-of-pocket investment required on a total investment of $50,000 to $200,000. Multi-unit Franchises…The franchisee acquires more than one unit of the franchise, usually at reduced franchise fees. The risk is lower because the franchisee can take advantage of the economies-of-scale theory; by spreading costs across multi-units, the locations may be more successful. A good sign of the health of the franchise is if many of the franchisees are multi-unit owners. Territory: There is usually no exclusive territory where the franchises must be set up. The franchisee may have one unit in one part of town with a surrounding radius of exclusivity, and another unit in another part of town 15 miles away or even in another county with its exclusive radius of operation. Level of participation: The franchisee is less involved with each of the units operations, but will be managing multiple operations and will need to have some level of supervision in each unit. If many units are opened, a general manager and additional administrative and training staff may be needed. The franchisee is more of a general manager when many units are involved. Typical liquid capital required: $50,000 to $70,000 initial out-of-pocket capital is required to take care of mostly the initial franchise fees. The rest of the investment is usually financed when each unit is opened. Area Development Franchises…This license usually grants the franchisee the right to open a certain number of franchises in a given area. There is usually a production schedule where the franchisee must open a certain number of franchises during a certain period. The franchisee has an exclusive area where no other franchisees can be allowed to open a franchise. Territory: The franchisee maintains an exclusive geographic territory as long as the opening schedule is maintained. The territories range from a small city to parts or all of a larger city. Level of participation: The franchisee will be very involved in the beginning stages of the first location to make sure it is successful. The franchisee will also need to be looking for qualified real estate to open the next few locations. Once several locations are open, the franchisee will need additional assistance to manage several units. Typical liquid capital required: $60,000 to $120,000 initially to secure the area, pay all franchise fees and have additional start-up capital. The franchisee will then need to be able to finance the rest of the start-up costs for each of the franchises, as they open. Master Franchises…A Master Franchisee, sometimes called a Regional Developer, has the rights to a larger area than that of an Area Developer. The Master Franchisee, in addition to opening franchises at a much reduced franchise fee and royalty, can also sell unit franchises, multi-unit franchises and area development franchises and make a nice return on the sale. The master usually receives a part of the royalty and franchise fee paid by each franchisee. There may be additional income available from distribution of products through the franchisees in the area and possibly even some real estate interest. The master becomes somewhat of a sub-franchisor for the area, without having experienced all the trial and error the original franchisor did. The master franchisee will usually want to open and operate at least one unit (pilot location), for income and use as a training center. Master franchises are not offered as readily as the other levels of franchising. However, when they are available they usually sell quickly. The income available from a master franchise is extremely lucrative. The initial investment is low compared to the type of value you can build in the master franchise area. The flexibility is also the greatest at this level. Territory: Usually is a large metropolitan area, an entire state or even several states or country. It is an exclusive area and will remain exclusive as long as the master franchisee meets the development schedule of franchises in the territory. Level or participation: The master franchisee will usually set up and operate at least one unit and use a manger to manage it while working on selling other “sub-franchises†and assisting them in operating properly. Very rarely is a master franchisee “hands on†in a unit franchise. They tend to spend more of their time operating like a business consultant or coach to their franchisees to help them become successful. Typical liquid capital required: $100,000 to $250,000 is needed to acquire the territory and for initial liquid capital to start the area. Financing will be secured for the start-up of the unit franchise. “Business Opportunityâ€â€¦Like a franchise, a “business opportunity†will have a start-up package, operational methodology, training and on-going support. A business opportunity charges an upfront fee that is comparable to a franchise fee, but there are no on-going royalty fees charged by the business opportunity company. A unique difference between a franchise and a business opportunity is a business opportunity does not have the rules and reporting requirements associated with franchise ownership. The quality of on-going support will vary widely across the spectrum of business opportunities. Some will provide very little, while others provide extensive continuing support and training. Business opportunities may be more suitable for experienced business people who desire the advantage of having access to a proven system with an organization to lean on for support from both the corporate staff and the other owners as well, but still have the opportunity to “do things their own wayâ€. Click on the Website link below, or go to: www.franchise-quest.com Resource Center > Newsletter What I Learned From Complete Burnout At Work By Tomasz Tunguz During my first few weeks at Google, I read through the internal resumes of my new colleagues, which detailed their work and promotion paths. Google promoted people quickly. Some college graduates who had distinguished themselves had been promoted every quarter for more than a year, and were managers, senior managers, even directors. And I wanted the same type of trajectory. So I resolved to work as much as possible to achieve it. At the outset, I began to take on other projects. Small things like an extra research project. Or helping a friend with a presentation. One day, when I thought we needed a basic CRM for our team, I stayed up late into the morning building one, called Toothpaste. Pretty soon, the extra work began to consume a lot more time. I began to sleep less, going to bed on consistently after midnight, sometimes sleeping only a few hours. I doubled down on productivity tools looking to do more in less time. I began to focus on reducing interruptions and tallied each time someone interrupted me. Amidst the growing workload, I wanted to keep up an exercise regimen similar to the one I had on the crew team at school. The earliest San Francisco to Mountain View bus arrived too late to work out for more than an hour to be in the office before 730. So when I happened to meet Marty, who ran the Google bus program, I asked if there might be an earlier shuttle. The next week, a bus began arriving at my Google bus stop around 4am. I would climb aboard and fall asleep in the back row. Somewhere along the way, we would stop to pick up one of the Google chefs, rising early to prepare breakfast. I might arrive around 5, workout for about 90-120 minutes and then back to my desk. Weekends I tried to catch up on sleep, but often, I worked most of Saturday and Sunday too. I was a flywheel spinning out of control. On Christmas Eve 2005, my family admitted me to the emergency room. Bacterial pneumonia. Everyone told me my lifestyle was unsustainable and it had to change. Especially my manager. This was the fourth time in four quarters that I had been to the ER. Since then, I’ve learned a few things about how to avoid burnout: I am responsible for setting boundaries. Work time, sleep time, family time, you time. If I don’t set them properly, things get unbalanced very quickly. Being productive isn’t about doing more and more in the same amount of time. It’s about doing only the most important things well. And either saying no to the other things or finding another way for them to get done. I can’t win a marathon by thinking of it as 26 mile long sprints, or a week as 5 day-long sprints. Loved ones are good judges of when things are in and out of balance, and in my case, my wife helped me find more balance. Taking time off is essential. Vacations, yes, but also nights and weekends. At the beginning of each year, I try to remember that feeling of being out of balance, of being in the hospital with pneumonia, to reflect on how I should be spending time this year. Which are the most important things I need to do well in 2017? And which things just aren’t? Does Your Life In Corporate America Seem Like You Are Standing On The Ledge? Blake Mallen, a very successful entrepreneur, once told me, “The moment you stop doing what you think you are supposed to do, and start doing what you were meant to do, is when the script ends and life beginsâ€. Is it time for you to break from the script and go after a life that offers you greater flexibility, freedom and independence? Studies show that 82% of Americans say they would like to own their own business. But, only 5% will ever realize this dream. Perhaps that can be best explained by a quote from Brian Tracey. Mr. Tracey has said, “A thousand dreams die unborn every day because the dreamer lacks the courage to take the first stepâ€. Please allow me to describe a common scenario…You are ready for a career change-you get the urge to tell your boss what she / he can do with the latest company policy. The reality of corporate life is becoming more painful …job security is an illusion…your work and income are being dictated by someone else…your employer isn’t investing in your future. Now, your brain is on a mental trampoline and you exclaim, “Well, why don’t I invest in myself?†Then, your mind begins to race back and forth between the known reality of the uncertain life in corporate America, and the unknown aspects of how you can get independence through business ownership. If you are one of the 82% don't let the "FUD (Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt) Factor" stop you. Overcoming the FUD Factor There is a book written by John Ortberg, If you want to walk on water, you’ve got to get out of the boat. If owning your own business has been an aspiration of yours, do you want to continue to dream, or are you ready to take that first step towards turning your dream into reality? Perhaps you are like the clients I work with every day… Want to leave their corporate America job, or Already in career transition, Desire to be self-employed, But, don't know what type of business is right for them, where or how to start the process. FEBRUARY 2016 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- Emotional Fulfillment – Controlling Your Own Destiny Does A Franchise Meet Your Needs? When you think of becoming a businessperson by making the transition from employee to Franchisee, you don’t generally think in terms of emotional fulfillment. However, in reality, the evaluation of emotional factors should play a significant role in making that final decision to join the world of the capitalist, or remain in the realm of employee. Of course, every analysis should include the standard of comparing risk to return. It should include income projections, and cash flows. It should include the analysis of financing avenues, site selection alternatives, and many other objective criteria to lead to a final decision about becoming an entrepreneur. The course of due diligence should be driven by a systematic approach to each of these items. However, in the end, assuming the objective criteria have been ticked off your list in a satisfactory fashion, it should boil down to emotional fulfillment. After all, we all have a right to be happy. That particular statement – ‘we all have a right to be happy’ – has changed the course of my life on several occasions. It was one of those statements that was passed casually by an acquaintance over dinner one evening, and ignored by everyone at the table, except it hit me right in the heart. It stuck to me like red on a stop sign. As a result, I have made many important life decisions based on emotional criteria, in addition to objective criteria. If it doesn’t pass muster on both fronts then I look for a better course. There are many employment situations that can meet your emotional needs, wants and desires. Of course, there are also many that do not, and cannot. A full examination of emotional criteria should include the analysis of several items, with the ultimate goal of determining whether your needs can be met by a job, or whether it is more likely they can be met by your own business. Control Your Own Destiny The degree of priority that this particular criterion holds for an individual is probably the single most important factor to consider before making the decision to strike out on your own. Just how important is it that you control day-to-day decisions about what you do, and where you do it. How important is it to you to know that you have ultimate control over whether you stay or whether you go at some point. The reality is that it’s not really possible to control your own destiny with a job. Even the most important CEO’s must answer to the Board of Directors. In more traditional circumstances, when and where you travel, when you get promoted, how much you earn, and how long you keep your job are items that are simply not in your control. The boss, and his boss, and her boss, control those things. As we have seen, bosses change, as do Boards, and status quo is sent for a topsy-turvy spin. When, and if, those things happen, are generally not in the control of an employee. As we have seen in recent years, decades really, right-sizing, down-sizing, out-sourcing, and severance packages are the norm of the employment world. The importance of these items, including the degree of control you require over them, should help guide you to your own comfort zone. In addition to a systematic approach to the objective items in making a decision to become an entrepreneur on your own, or to become a Franchisee in a good system, these emotional factors should be ticked off the list as well. Are you satisfied where you are? Can you achieve your goals and dreams in your current situation? Are you more likely to satisfy the need to control your results with your own business? How important is each criteria to you? Did you have to travel over your son’s birthday? Did you have an expense disallowed unfairly? Is the likelihood high or low of the bronze (as opposed to golden) parachute at age 53, with a low chance of a comparable position in the job market? Did you get passed over for a promotion, did you have to work overtime through the Christmas holidays, did you miss your daughter’s volleyball tournament because you couldn’t get off early on Friday? If these things eat at you, perhaps a change in course is due. If you accept that these things go with the territory of employment, then change may not be necessary. Of course, as you progress up the ladder of promotion, you gain some additional autonomy for these types of issues. However, you must also try to determine if that next rung also carries an additional risk of termination at some point. On the other hand, will being in the business you are evaluating help solve the problems that are important to you? Will your business cause the same travel issues? Will the time demands, or strange hours of being a businessperson, be an advantage or disadvantage? Evaluate these items honestly, and with as much empirical evidence as you can gather, along with the other control issues that matter to you. Then determine which situation meets your goals more appropriately. And determine how important that is to you. Then it’s time to move on to the next evaluation criteria. If you always use the ‘I deserve to be happy’ test with each criterion, and try to determine which scenario is most likely to get you closest to that goal, then you will know which column to tick. If you execute this exercise in a systematic fashion along with a systematic evaluation to the objective criteria, it will help to provide clarity for you in the decision-making process. The exercise should then be repeated for a whole host of other emotional factors such as financial independence, day-to-day motivation, building an asset of value, appreciation for efforts, fair remuneration for results generated, free time for family & friends, community respect, recognition of achievements, and several others. The bottom line is you’ve got to look at ROI, cash flow, the system of support, the value of building a brand, the marketplace, and all of the other objective criteria needed to make a proper decision. However, in addition, you also need to examine what you want out of life, and whether a Franchise will help you get there. Have a job you don’t like? DECEMBER 2015 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- Every year, thousands of people dream of owning a business and are drawn to the independence, flexibility and freedom of being self-employed. The job market as we have known it continues to change, so people are retooling their vision of how they will make a living in the years to come. This is driving people of all ages and career types to pursue self-employment options, including small business ownership as the “new†career of choice. Remember, a window of opportunity won’t open itself… Perhaps 2016 Is The Right Time To Pursue A New Work-Life. ...Own Your Dream Go confidently in the direction of your dream. Live the life you have imagined. -Henry David Thoreau- Do you have a dream to be self-employed…to own you own business? Does this dream inspire you, energize you, and stir your inner drive to do everything you can to achieve it? Perhaps the most important question is, “How will you achieve your dreamâ€? The answer to this question is imperative because “it is the reason†most people never realize their dream. Too often franchise / business owner "wannabes" simply lose their focus and drift away. Instead, I obtained the services of a franchise consultant who guided me through the process of becoming a "refugee of corporate America". And, as is often said, “the rest is history…†Don't Just Change Your Curtains... Change Your View. I Did. OCTOBER 2015 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- Are You Ready To Become A Butcher, Baker, or Candle Stick Maker... Do you have the perfect job, wonderful life, everything you want? If so, do you have a back-up plan if the unthinkable happens? What would you do if you unexpectedly lost your job? Is your job really that secure or safe? Many employment / career experts believe there is no security, except that which you create for yourself. Or, this scenario…you have a job, but would prefer to have a LIFE. And, are wondering if you can continue to do what you are doing now, at the same intensity that you are doing it, for the next 10, 20, or 30 years. As the 21st century job market continues to constrict, working people are retooling their vision of how they will make a living in the years to come. This is driving young people, mid-career types, those who are transitioning out of corporate America jobs, as well as stay-at-home mothers who would like to go back to work, to pursue small business ownership as the career of choice. Creating your own job is the new path job security. As people seek business opportunities, it is important that they pursue options based on the right criteria. Too often, people that are new to the process of exploring business ownership may think they know what they want before they are aware of what is available, as well as the options that align with their goals, lifestyle needs and financial parameters. As children, we may have wanted to pursue a career as a fireman or a pilot. Both of these jobs sound pretty cool, but the interest is based on both a limited knowledge of career options and little or no consideration of other life goals such as where you will live, if you will have a family of your own and what type of skills or training will be required. When searching for a business, we need to carefully define the things that are important to us such as personal / professional interests, lifestyle needs and financial goals while being realistic about our unique competencies. Another important consideration that defines our options is our investment capability. This is typically defined through consideration of our net worth and our available cash or liquidity. A good rule of thumb is that you need about 30% of the total that you will invest in liquid funds and then you can finance the other 70%, provided you have remaining assets to collateralize the loan. I generally recommend that people not put more than half of their net worth at risk. This is a prudent guideline and while sometimes it leaves people with options that don't fit their original vision, it is better to start small than to be over extended when starting a business. Your first business doesn't have to be forever and you can transition into a business that requires more capital later, when you have the resources and experience to do it properly. Finding the right entry point can launch you on a very rewarding career as a business owner and allow you to perform at your best level. The good news is that today there are more business models available to choose from than ever before, so choose wisely and don't be afraid to ask for assistance from a qualified advisor / coach. Remember, a window of opportunity won’t open itself… ********************************************************************************************************************* Today, many people dread going to work. It is estimated that as many as 80% of the working population is dissatisfied with their jobs. For these folks, going to work is a chore. Go Horns Go. Farming to Corporate America to The Era of the Franchise The Era Of The Franchise By Frank Agin Nearly one-hundred-some-odd years ago, in a dusty field, somewhere in middle America, a Son told his Father that he was no longer going to farm. The Son announced that he was joining Corporate America. Although farming was the only way his generation ever conceived of earning a living, he knew that farming would no longer pay him what he was worth. Even though those who continued to farm ridiculed his optimism about the potential of Corporate America, the Son believed that the World was changing. The demand for industrialization created tremendous market for his labor, and the Son knew that Corporate America would pay him what he was worth. The Son was right. The World was changing and Corporate America paid him what he was worth. However, those who continued to farm, believing that life would never change, were left struggling, earning only a fraction of what they were worth. While the Son continued to labor, Corporate America realized that if it just paid the Son a little less than he was worth, then Corporate America would generate more wealth for itself. The paid reduction, however, was so small that the Son didn’t even notice. As the Son didn’t notice, the next year Corporate America held back a little bit more. Rapidly the World is changing before our eyes. Consistent pay raises have given way to ongoing wage freezes. The notion of lifetime employment is being replaced by downsizing, outsourcing, and off-shoring. It is no secret: to build wealth in America you need to build business. To ensure success, however, you are best to not go at it alone, which is where the notion of franchising comes in. We are now in the era of the franchise. Knowing this, are you going to take advantage of a changing World, or are you going to let a changing World take advantage of you? Frank Agin is the author of several professional development books, including Foundational Networking: Building Know, Like & Trust To Create A Lifetime Of Extraordinary Success ************************************************************************************************************ Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.†Are you allowing your professional life to wander aimlessly, or stand still? July 2015 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- The New Corporate Alchemy... ...Gold Watches To Pink Slips By Frank Agin, AmSpirit Business Connections There once was a nobler time. You studied hard. From there you learned a trade or earned a degree. Which you could parlay into that first job. It wasn't just a job, however. It was the beginning of a career. Sure, you started at the bottom, but there was plenty of opportunity to work your way up. One rung at a time you climbed the corporate ladder. Associate. Senior Associate. Supervisor. Manager. Assistant V.P. In addition, the environment was positive. Pay raises were always respectable. Time off was seldom an issue. Moreover, by working diligently from nine to five during the week, the evenings and weekends were yours. After 40-or-so years of this, you had done your time. Surrounded by admiring co-workers, your service to "the company" was celebrated. Several heartfelt speeches from people who considered you a friend. A big cake. And a gold watch. Finally, an appreciative higher-up, walked you to your car and sincerely told you, "Be well ... See you around ... Don't be a stranger." From here, you settled into retirement. Drawing on a well-funded pension, social security, and health coverage, you did not have a care in the world. It was a nobler time. That nobler time, however, is not now. Somewhere along the way, the world changed. No one is to blame. It just did. Whatever the case, the change was not to your benefit. No longer is a degree or a trade good enough to steer you clear of a dead-end job. You might need additional certification or a Masters, if you are lucky enough not to have to start over because technology made your "stock in trade" obsolete. Even when you find that job with career potential, you are not set. Wage freezes and shrinking benefits are now the norm. Moreover, you seem to be permanently stuck in a no-advancement mode. Any hope of change is the result of a lateral move, either internally or to another company. While the overall compensation and opportunity dwindles, the work doesn't. Even starting work at 0-Dark-30 does not immunize you from having to work into the evening and over the weekend. As such, you sacrifice time with friends, family, or whatever. Moreover, no matter how hard you work (or little you accept) the whispers persist. From behind closed doors in offices far away, these voices are from higher-ups you have never met. Pouring over nameless and faceless numbers they ponder as to whether "the company" can replace you with someone or something less expensive. While today that answer may be "NO," it won't always be. One day, that "pondering" will not come out in your favor. In an era of downsizing, off-shoring, and automation, it is no longer a question of "If" but "When." At that point, an almost stranger abruptly escorts you to the door. There is no celebration. There is no cake. There is no explanation other than, "Your services are no longer necessary." Just like that in a perverse sort of alchemy, "corporate America" has transformed your gold watch into a “pink slip†and nothing more. This is the new corporate reality, like it or not. While you have little control over it, you have options to avoid it. One is becoming your own boss and acquiring your own piece of the American dream. ******************************************************************************************************* Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.†Are you allowing your professional life to wander aimlessly, or stand still? Do you dislike your corporate job, but don’t know how to find your real niche in life? Rapidly the World is changing before our eyes. Consistent pay raises have given way to ongoing wage freezes, or minimal increases. The notion of lifetime employment is being replaced by downsizing, outsourcing, and off-shoring. It is no secret: to build wealth in America you need to build a business. To ensure success, however, you are best to not go it alone, which is where the notion of franchising comes in. We are now in the era of the franchise. Did you know that that 90%+ of all franchises opened during the past five (5) years are still open? With what degree of certainty can you forecast that you will still have your job in five (5) years? Franchises are everywhere today. Even during tight economic conditions, consumers must still buy goods and services. As the economy continues to improve and expand, businesses in operation today, will have a golden opportunity to increase their market share. In fact, financial experts believe that franchising is the “wave of the futureâ€. During the next 10 years, franchises could comprise over 50% of the retail and service sectors. This tremendous growth should be expected based on the underlying concept-Franchises offer aspiring business owners the greatest potential for success, with the least amount of risk. Franchises will provide thousands of individuals the opportunity to realize their dream of successful business ownership and financial independence. Within both the U.S. and world economies, franchising is continuing to evolve. This evolution will create even greater avenues for wealth accumulation among both franchisees and franchisors. The existing franchise systems will become more successful and continue to grow, while new franchises will be developed and introduced to the market. WASHINGTON, Jan. 7, 2015 – Franchise businesses are expected to grow and create more jobs at a faster pace than the rest of the economy in 2015 for the fifth consecutive year, according to The Franchise Business Economic Outlook: 2015 released today by the International Franchise Association (IFA) Educational Foundation and IHS Economics. "Franchising is an American success story. Independently-owned and operated local franchise businesses are growing faster, creating more jobs at a quicker pace and producing higher sales growth than other businesses. Franchising is a vital engine of economic expansion in the United States and 2015 looks to be another strong year for franchise businesses," said IFA President & CEO Steve Caldeira. April 2015 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown What’s Your Wish? The White Envelope... It's just a small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name, no identification, no inscription. It has peeked through the branches of our tree for the past 10 years or so. It all began because my husband hated Christmas---oh, not the true meaning of Christmas, but the “craziness†of Christmas – where he had a tendency to sit back and do WAY too much thinking, about his future, his family, what he wanted to be when he grew up, so to say. Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to do something for him. The inspiration came in an unusual way – I was watching a magician on television doing a “trick†when it struck me… I asked him to write down for me, every New Year’s Day, what he wanted from his life. It didn’t matter what he put down – this was for him. And I didn’t want to see it. Then, every Thanksgiving weekend, when we put up the Christmas tree, I’d ask him to open it and see what it said. And then I’d ask him, “Are you closer to reaching it? If not, what can I do to help?†After a couple of years of this, my husband turned to me and said, “Yes, you can help. You see – I want to own my own business. I’ve always realized I could build equity for our family better this way – plus get away from the corporate nonsense I deal with every day. But if we do this, we’re going to have to tighten our belts in the short-term. Are you ready to help?†I nearly keeled over from shock. I had become accustomed to our nice little life – and knowing my husband was able to make a good salary and support our family well. I worked as well, but was also busy with the kids, so we depended largely on his salary. “What are you considering?†I asked, trying to sound supportive. “Well, I’m looking at buying a franchise,†he said. “I’ve been working with a franchise consultant, and he has helped me understand my skills and what franchise companies would be right for me. I’m in the process of investigating several right now – and one, in particular, is looking like a really good fit for us.†“Oh. C…,†I mumbled, and then quickly began thinking of ways I could submarine this radical thinking that was going to destroy the security of our family. “Have you spoken with your Dad about this?†“Yes, I have,†my husband said, “and he asked me if I had the ‘stuff’ to make it work?†“Well, do you?, “ I asked. “I don’t know,†my husband replied, “but I DO know that if I don’t see this through, I’ll never be happy, because I will have never seen through what I thought I could do with myself in life.†“Well, obviously this is important to you.†I offered. “Let’s share it with family when they’re here for the holidays – and see what they have to say,†hoping in my heart they’d help me out on this issue. “We can do that,†he said, “but I don’t need another WIPE-OUT. You know, WELL-INTENTIONED PERSONS OFFERING UNINFORMED THOUGHTS? My Dad has been doing that to me my whole life. It took me years to understand that he didn’t mean me harm, but that he wished for my safety, and that suggesting I avoid risk was his way of doing it.†“I’ve already spoken with a lot of people,†he went on to say. “And I’ve learned that once you begin to talk about your desires to own your own business, you will get all sorts of comments back that don’t always reflect an understanding of who you really are, and certainly don’t reflect a knowledge of the business you are investigating. Be it your father, or your “know-it-all†sister-in-law, or your neighbor, or your co-worker. They all seem to have an opinion. I have learned I needed to understand two things. First, as I said, I’ve learned that my loved ones have my “safety†at heart – not my “success†– so they are hardly in the position to advise me to do something that would put me or my family at any risk at all. Secondly, many can make a comment that may appear to have my best interest at heart, but that person doesn’t have the details I have in investigating a business. I guess I’ve learned this is something I simply have to do on my own. Wow, I thought. He’s got me pegged. “OK, then what can I do here?†“Join me in this investigation process,†he requested. “Work with me to learn about these businesses. And then we can decide together – if this one particular business isn’t right, it won’t change how I feel. I still want to do this.†Well, we did exactly what he asked me to…and 7 years ago, we purchased a franchise business together. It has met his personal fulfillment needs – and neither of us has ever regretted a minute. But why still the “white envelope,†you say? Do I still have him fill it out every year? “No, I don’t. These days it is no more than an empty envelope. But it’s a constant reminder to me to that I almost “blew it. That I was thinking about what I thought was right for me, not for my husband, or for our family. And that reminder is the best message I can receive every holidayâ€. **************************************************************************************************************************************************** Every year, thousands of people dream of owning a business and are drawn to the independence, flexibility and freedom of being self-employed. The Most Highly Paid Employees…. Following my graduation from UT, I spent 25 years toiling in corporate America employment in increasingly more responsible Human Resources roles. Over the years, I came to learn that many Compensation Specialists considered commissioned sales people to be the most highly paid employees (excluding corporate senior executives) in the country. Based on my HR experience, I also believe this to be true. In the Business Section of the March 3, 2015 issue of the San Antonio Express-News , there is an article highlighting the six (6) wealthiest San Antonio billionaires on Forbes magazine’s listing of the world’s billionaires for 2015…Charles Butt; Rodney Lewis; Tom Benson; B.J. “Red†McCombs; “Kit†Goldsbury; and James Leininger. Reading the article got me to thinking. Is there a common denominator between these rich men? And, there is… The correlation between each of these highly successful men…They Are ALL Present or Former Business Owners. So, think about it. The highest paid employees (excluding corporate senior executives) are employed in commissioned sales roles. And, the wealthiest folks in the U.S. (and the free-world) are BUSINESS OWNERS. Yep, it is true…where there is risk, there can also be great reward. Wealth: Having ownership in a business is the classic path to creating wealth. When you build a business you are building an asset that grows in value and can eventually be sold--hopefully for quite a bit of money. This wealth payoff to the owner is on top of the income received during the operation of the business. Owning a business involves taking more risk in the beginning, but the reward is that any wealth created through your efforts will accrue to you rather than to someone else (as it does when you have a job). This factor is very important to most people who choose to become business owners. There is a book written by John Ortberg, “If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boatâ€. ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown Rapidly the World is changing before our eyes. Make no mistake, corporate loyalty is a one-way street. And, job security behind the corporate curtain is a myth. So, don't just change your curtains...change your view.
