December 2018 Franchise Opportunity Knocks Self-employment Beckons Start answering the call right here. News you can use to help you find The right franchise / business opportunity for you. What’s Your Wish? The White Envelope... It's just a small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name, no identification, no inscription. It has peeked through the branches of our tree for the past 10 years or so. It all began because my husband hated Christmas---oh, not the true meaning of Christmas, but the “craziness” of Christmas – where he had a tendency to sit back and do WAY too much thinking, about his future, his family, what he wanted to be when he grew up, so to say. Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to do something for him. The inspiration came in an unusual way – I was watching a magician on television doing a “trick” when it struck me… I asked him to write down for me, every New Year’s Day, what he wanted from his life. It didn’t matter what he put down – this was for him. And I didn’t want to see it. Then, every Thanksgiving weekend, when we put up the Christmas tree, I’d ask him to open it and see what it said. And then I’d ask him, “Are you closer to reaching it? If not, what can I do to help?” After a couple of years of this, my husband turned to me and said, “Yes, you can help. You see – I want to own my own business. I’ve always realized I could build equity for our family better this way – plus get away from the corporate nonsense I deal with every day. But if we do this, we’re going to have to tighten our belts in the short-term. Are you ready to help?” I nearly keeled over from shock. I had become accustomed to our nice little life – and knowing my husband was able to make a good salary and support our family well. I worked as well, but was also busy with the kids, so we depended largely on his salary. “What are you considering?” I asked, trying to sound supportive. “Well, I’m looking at buying a franchise,” he said. “I’ve been working with a franchise consultant, and he has helped me understand my skills and what franchise companies would be right for me. I’m in the process of investigating several right now – and one, in particular, is looking like a really good fit for us.” “Oh. Crap,” I mumbled, and then quickly began thinking of ways I could submarine this radical thinking that was going to destroy the security of our family. “Have you spoken with your Dad about this?” “Yes, I have,” my husband said, “and he asked me if I had the ‘stuff’ to make it work?” “Well, do you?“ I asked. “I don’t know,” my husband replied, “but I DO know that if I don’t see this through, I’ll never be happy, because I will have never seen through what I thought I could do with myself in life.” “Well, obviously this is important to you.” I offered. “Let’s share it with family when they’re here for the holidays – and see what they have to say,” hoping in my heart they’d help me out on this issue. “We can do that,” he said, “but I don’t need another WIPE-OUT. You know, WELL-INTENTIONED PERSONS OFFERING UNINFORMED THOUGHTS? My Dad has been doing that to me my whole life. It took me years to understand that he didn’t mean me harm, but that he wished for my safety, and that suggesting I avoid risk was his way of doing it.” “I’ve already spoken with a lot of people,” he went on to say. “And I’ve learned that once you begin to talk about your desires to own your own business, you will get all sorts of comments back that don’t always reflect an understanding of who you really are, and certainly don’t reflect a knowledge of the business you are investigating. Be it your father, or your “know-it-all” sister-in-law, or your neighbor, or your co-worker. They all seem to have an opinion. I have learned I needed to understand two things. First, as I said, I’ve learned that my loved ones have my “safety” at heart – not my “success” – so they are hardly in the position to advise me to do something that would put me or my family at any risk at all. Secondly, many can make a comment that may appear to have my best interest at heart, but that person doesn’t have the details I have in investigating a business. I guess I’ve learned this is something I simply have to do on my own. Wow, I thought. He’s got me pegged. “OK, then what can I do here?” “Join me in this investigation process,” he requested. “Work with me to learn about these businesses. And then we can decide together – if this one particular business isn’t right, it won’t change how I feel. I still want to do this.” Well, we did exactly what he asked me to…and 7 years ago, we purchased a franchise business together. It has met his personal fulfillment needs – and neither of us has ever regretted a minute. But why still the “white envelope,” you say? Do I still have him fill it out every year? “No, I don’t. These days it is no more than an empty envelope. But it’s a constant reminder to me to that I almost “blew it. That I was thinking about what I thought was right for me, not for my husband, or for our family. And that reminder is the best message I can receive every holiday”. **************************************************************************************** Every year, thousands of people dream of owning a business and are drawn to the independence, flexibility and freedom of being self-employed. The job market as we have known it continues to change, so people are retooling their vision of how they will make a living in the years to come. This is driving people of all ages and career types to pursue self-employment options, including small business ownership as the “new” career of choice. Today, creating your own job has become the new path to job security. A franchise / business opportunity may not be right for everyone and they are certainly not all created equal, but a good business model can lower the risk factor and accelerate one’s potential for long term success. The key is finding the right match between the franchise / business opportunity model and the owner-operator. Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.” Are you allowing your professional life to wander aimlessly, or stand still? Do you dislike your corporate job, but don’t know how to find your real niche in life? A window of opportunity won’t open itself… **************************************************************************************** You desire to be self-employed… What is preventing you from moving towards that dream? ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown **************************************************************************************** The New Year 2019 is rapidly approaching. I’m sure many of you are contemplating your professional future, as well as what you want to do when you “grow up”. Perhaps you are facing the perplexing dilemma: Do I stay with the Ugly Girl / Steady Eddie boyfriend (Employment) because I’m afraid to pursue the Beautiful Girl / Stud Jock (Business Ownership)... Note: Please do not interpret the above statement as any type of sexist statement. It is only intended to be an illustrative play-on-words. Perhaps you have the perfect job and perfect life, but do you have a back-up plan if the unthinkable happens? Maybe you are ready for a change, ready to live life to its fullest or ready to take control of your future. If you are presently employed can you continue to do what you are doing now at the same intensity for the next 10, 20, or 30 years? Do you really want to? You may want to infuse some excitement back into your work-life. Or, does your life in corporate America seem like you are standing on the edge staring down into the abyss? Today, many people would answer YES to that question. Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving”. Are you allowing your professional life to wander aimlessly, or stand still? Dislike your corporate job, but don’t know how to find your real niche in life? Presently have a demanding JOB, but prefer to have a LIFE? Desire is to own your business with more flexibility, financial success and independence? Fed up with your job and ready to be your own boss? Burned-out from corporate America? Prepared to take control of the future for you and your family? Eager to infuse excitement back into your work-life? Content with your present job, but don’t have a back-up plan if the unthinkable happens? Ready to change the future by controlling your destiny, rather than having it dictated by someone else? Today, many people dread going to work. It is estimated that as many as 80% of the working population is dissatisfied with their jobs. For these folks, going to work is a chore. Did you know the average person will spend over 90,000 hours at work over their lifetime? Wow, that’s a long time to be unhappy. Blake Mallen, a very successful entrepreneur, once told me, “The moment you stop doing what you think you are supposed to do, and start doing what you were meant to do, is when the script ends and life begins”. Is it time for you to break from the script and go after a life that offers you greater flexibility, freedom and independence? Studies show that the majority of Americans say they would like to own their own business. But, only a few will ever realize this dream. Perhaps that can be best explained by a quote from Brian Tracey. Mr. Tracey has said, “A thousand dreams die unborn every day because the dreamer lacks the courage to take the first step”. Please allow me to describe a common scenario… You are ready for a career change-you get the urge to tell your boss what she / he can do with the latest company policy. The reality of corporate life is becoming more painful; job security is an illusory; your work-life and income is being dictated by someone else; your employer isn’t investing in your future. Now, your brain is on a mental trampoline and you exclaim, “Well, why don’t I invest in myself?”. Then, your mind begins to race back and forth between the known reality of the uncertain and often unpleasant life in corporate America, and the unknown aspects of how you can get independence through business ownership. If you are one of the 80% don't let the "FUD (Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt) Factor" stop you. Tony Robbins: Fear can create unnecessary stress in the mind and how to get it out of your head when it happens. What a lot of people call suffering is really just an overload of stress, Robbins says. When billionaires call him seeking business advice, he digs deeper to uncover the root of their problems. They might be looking for growth or more impressive sales results, but after he acknowledges what they want, he aims to give them what they need. If I follow the trail of your stress, it will take me to your deepest fears, he says. And I always believe that life is the dance between what you desire most and what you fear most. Somewhere in that equation lies the real need, the one thing everyone wants the most… a meaningful life. You won’t achieve that by living in a way that favors suffering, such as overstressing about money, Robbins says. Since the brain was designed for survival rather than happiness, it’s up to the human to decide its fate and to create happiness in a space that historically functioned on a fight or flight level. It’s learning how to train yourself with a new set of habits to look at it, to be entertained by the mind and know that you’re more than your mind, Robbins says. Do you have a dream to be self-employed and to own you own business? Does this dream inspire you, energize you, and stir your inner drive to do everything you can to achieve it? Perhaps the most important question is…How will you achieve your dream? The answer to this question is imperative because it is the reason most people never realize their dream. Too often franchise business owner "wannabes" simply lose their focus and drift away. These people who really want to own a business don’t ever get to enjoy this wonderful experience because they allow the "FUD Factor" to grow, fester and steal their dream. They have no guidance or strategy in place, no knowledge of what is needed and must sometimes be sacrificed to have the dream come true. Most people have no idea how to achieve their dream of becoming a business owner. They don’t know what type of business is right for them, where or how to start the process. So, most people simply get overwhelmed with fear, uncertainty and doubt. And, when people are unsure as to what, how, and when, they STOP. A window of opportunity won’t open itself. So, would this scenario be of interest and value to you… a process where you receive assistance to help you better identify your goals, financial requirements, lifestyle needs and what you would like for your work-life to look like; then provided information on self-employment options and guidance on exploring these opportunities within the confines of a safe and no-obligation environment? Owning your own business may provide the opportunity for you to reach your goals. And, buying a franchise provides the opportunity to be in business for yourself, but not by yourself. A franchise already has a proven concept and an effective business model with a stable track record. Therefore, you gain access to a successful business concept without having to reinvent the wheel. Franchises are everywhere today. Financial experts believe franchising is the wave of the future. Within 10 years, franchises could comprise over 50% of the retail and service sectors. This expectation is based on the underlying concept-Franchises offer aspiring business owners the greatest success potential, with the least amount of risk. Franchises present countless opportunities for successful ownership and financial independence. In U.S. and world economies, franchising is creating greater avenues for wealth accumulation among both franchisees and franchisors. As existing franchise systems become more successful, new franchises will be developed and introduced to the market. In today’s market, thousands of franchise opportunities are available - just about everything from advertising to maid services to weight control. The franchisor knows the business, so industry experience is not required. Franchisors seek franchisees possessing customer service, business and management skills. Franchises have proven to be an effective vehicle for successfully transitioning into a new industry and self-employment with an improved quality of life, while becoming the master of your own destiny. ********************************************************* Are you in career transition, or contemplating making a change? “HORN IN" On Franchise / Business Ownership a monthly post with blurbs, links, and other words-of-wisdom regarding self-employment; career transition; and franchise / business ownership; as well as information for business owners who may be interested in franchising their business. October 2018 Franchise Opportunity Knocks Self-employment Beckons Start answering the call right here. News you can use to help you find The right franchise / business opportunity for you. “At first dreams seem impossible then improbable and eventually inevitable. ” -Christopher Reeve FOUR LEVELS OF FRANCHISING What Type of Franchise Arrangement is Best for You? Deciding on the level of franchising that best fits your needs is almost as important as investigating and choosing the right franchise. Below are the four levels of franchising, which include information on the territory specifics, the required level of participation, and the typical liquid capital requirements. It is best to consider all aspects of each level, before deciding upon a level in which to invest. Single-unit Franchises A franchisee has the right to operate one franchise unit. Most franchisees enter the world of franchising by owning one unit. It is a great way to get in and understand the system before taking on more units. Territory: The franchisee may have a small radius of exclusive territory to operate within. If it is a retail store, the area of exclusivity may be a two or three mile radius around the store. If it is a home-based business the area may consist of a few specific zip codes. Level of participation: The franchisee is very involved with almost all operations of this type. Even if it is a semi-absentee owned business, the franchisee will want to be present at the business and be as hands-on as possible. Typical liquid capital required: $35,000 to $70,000 initial out-of-pocket investment required on a total investment of $55,000 to $200,000+ Multi-unit Franchises The franchisee acquires more than one unit of the franchise, usually at reduced franchise fees. The risk is lower because the franchisee can take advantage of the economies-of-scale theory; by spreading costs across multi-units, the locations may be more successful. A good sign of the health of the franchise is if many of the franchisees are multi-unit owners. Territory: There is usually no exclusive territory where the franchises must be set up. The franchisee may have one unit in one part of town with a surrounding radius of exclusivity, and another unit in another part of town 15 miles away or even in another county with its exclusive radius of operation. Level of participation: The franchisee is less involved with each of the units operations, but will be managing multiple operations and will need to have some level of supervision in each unit. If many units are opened, a general manager and additional administrative and training staff may be needed. The franchisee is more of a general manager when many units are involved. Typical liquid capital required: $70,000 to $120,000 initial out-of-pocket capital is required to take care of mostly the initial franchise fees. The rest of the investment is usually financed when each unit is opened. Area Development Franchises This license usually grants the franchisee the right to open a certain number of franchises in a given area. There is usually a production schedule where the franchisee must open a certain number of franchises during a certain period. The franchisee has an exclusive area where no other franchisees can be allowed to open a franchise. Territory: The franchisee maintains an exclusive geographic territory as long as the opening schedule is maintained. The territories range from a small city to parts or all of a larger city. Level of participation: The franchisee will be very involved in the beginning stages of the first location to make sure it is successful. The franchisee will also need to be looking for qualified real estate to open the next few locations. Once several locations are open, the franchisee will need additional assistance to manage several units. Typical liquid capital required: $80,000 to $150,000 initially to secure the area, pay all franchise fees and have additional start-up capital. The franchisee will then need to be able to finance the rest of the start-up costs for each of the franchises, as they open. Master Franchises A Master Franchisee, sometimes called a Regional Developer, has the rights to a larger area than that of an Area Developer. The Master Franchisee, in addition to opening franchises at a much reduced franchise fee and royalty, can also sell unit franchises, multi-unit franchises and area development franchises and make a nice return on the sale. The master usually receives a part of the royalty and franchise fee paid by each franchisee. There may be additional income available from distribution of products through the franchisees in the area and possibly even some real estate interest. The master becomes somewhat of a sub-franchisor for the area, without having experienced all the trial and error the original franchisor did. The master franchisee will usually want to open and operate at least one unit (pilot location), for income and use as a training center. Master franchises are not offered as readily as the other levels of franchising. However, when they are available they usually sell quickly. The income available from a master franchise is extremely lucrative. The initial investment is low compared to the type of value you can build in the master franchise area. The flexibility is also the greatest at this level. Territory: Usually is a large metropolitan area, an entire state or even several states or country. It is an exclusive area and will remain exclusive as long as the master franchisee meets the development schedule of franchises in the territory. Level or participation: The master franchisee will usually set up and operate at least one unit and use a manger to manage it while working on selling other “sub-franchises” and assisting them in operating properly. Very rarely is a master franchisee “hands on” in a unit franchise. They tend to spend more of their time operating like a business consultant or coach to their franchisees to help them become successful. Typical liquid capital required: $150,000 to $350,000 is needed to acquire the territory and for initial liquid capital to start the area. Financing will be secured for the start-up of the unit franchise. Perhaps a “Business Opportunity” is a better fit for you than a franchise? Like a franchise, a “business opportunity” will have a start-up package, operational methodology, training and on-going support. A business opportunity charges an upfront fee that is comparable to a franchise fee, but there are no on-going royalty fees charged by the business opportunity company. A unique difference between a franchise and a business opportunity is a business opportunity does not have the rules and reporting requirements associated with franchise ownership. The quality of on-going support will vary widely across the spectrum of business opportunities. Some will provide very little, while others provide extensive continuing support and training. Business opportunities may be more suitable for experienced business people who desire the advantage of having access to a proven system with an organization to lean on for support from both the corporate staff and the other owners as well, but still have the opportunity to “do things their own way”. NOTE: Typical liquid capital requirements, as well as total investment amounts will vary based on the type of concept, real estate and geographic area. ********************************************************************************************* ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown ********************************************************************************************* Questions To Ask Yourself… · What are your reasons for wanting a business of your own? · Have you ever owned a business? · Do you possess the necessary attributes to be self-employed? · Can you make meaningful decisions without having 100% of the information? · What working days / hours do you want / need? · Do you want part-time or full-time? · Do you need flexible hours? · Where do you want your business to be located? · How far from home are you willing to travel to get to your business? · Would you prefer…office…retail…mobile…light industrial environment? · Do you want to manage employees? · Do you want to have inventory? · Do you prefer a cash business as opposed to one that carries accounts receivable? · How much liquid capital do you have to start a business? · What is your net worth? · What are you income requirements…1st year…2nd year, etc.? · Will franchise ownership be your primary source of income, or will it supplement other income? · Will you have partners? · Are you interested in pursuing a particular business / industry? · Do you want a single or multiple unit business? · Have you considered master franchising? · How soon do you want your business to open? · Will you be involved on a full-time or part-time basis? · Do you have the total support of your spouse / family for buying a business? · When you find the “right” franchise / business opportunity, are you the type of individual who will be ready, willing and able to “pull the trigger” and move forward with a new life? ********************************************************************************* STEM Based Curriculum This concept provides after school services using STEM based curriculum to children ages 5-14. Powell Blake Mallen, a very successful entrepreneur, once told me, “The moment you stop doing what you think you are supposed to do, and start doing what you were meant to do, is when the script ends and life begins”. Is it time for you to break from the script and go after a life that offers you greater flexibility, freedom and independence? Studies show that 82% of Americans say they would like to own their own business. But, only 5% will ever realize this dream. Perhaps that can be best explained by a quote from Brian Tracey. Mr. Tracey has said, “A thousand dreams die unborn every day because the dreamer lacks the courage to take the first step”. Please allow me to describe a common scenario…You are ready for a career change-you get the urge to tell your boss what she / he can do with the latest company policy. The reality of corporate life is becoming more painful …job security is an illusion…your work-life and income is being dictated by someone else…your employer isn’t investing in your future. Now, your brain is on a mental trampoline and you exclaim, “Well, why don’t I invest in myself?” Then, your mind begins to race back and forth between the known reality of the uncertain life in corporate America, and the unknown aspects of how you can get independence through business ownership. If you are one of the 82% don't let the "FUD (Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt) Factor" stop you. There is a book written by John Ortberg, If you want to walk on water, you’ve got to get out of the boat. The “boat” is what you hang on to, or whatever represents safety and security to you and that which pulls you away from the high adventure you actually seek. For many, moving towards the dream of being a business owner is simply letting go of the boat we call “corporate America”. What it really entails is going after what you were made to do, leaving the illusionary lifeboat behind and setting sail for uncharted waters. If owning your own business has been an aspiration of yours, do you want to continue to dream, or are you ready to take that first step towards turning your dream into reality? Perhaps you are like the clients I work with every day… Want to leave their corporate America job, In career transition, Desire to be self-employed, But, don’t know what type of business is right for them, where or how to start the process. My free and no-obligation consultative and coaching service will help you to crystallize your lifestyle needs, goals and objectives, as well as whether self-employment is even the right path for you to take at this time. If so, then through a search process we will identify franchise and business opportunities (“biz-op”) that are aligned with your talents, interest, goals, and financial requirements. My role is NOT to sell you a franchise “biz-op”. My objective is to help you identify and refine your goals and needs, present to you options that align with those goals, and then to help you make a sound decision that is best for you, your family and your lifestyle. Whether you are a first time buyer wanting to operate a single business unit, or an experienced operator seeking the right Master Franchise opportunity, I can help you find the option that fits your needs. There are thousands of franchise and “biz-op” concepts available today and cover just about everything from advertising to casual dining, laundry / dry cleaning, home repair, maid services, printing / copy services, real estate and weight control. And, since the franchisor knows the business, they aren’t looking for prospects with industry experience. They want franchisees who possess decision-making ability, customer service, business and management skills, and drive to succeed, not technical expertise. Thus, buying a franchise / business opportunity (“biz-op”) has proven to be a great vehicle for thousands of people to effectively transition into a new industry and self-employment. In the final analysis, the choice and responsibility for researching business / franchise opportunities are yours, but as you contemplate such a huge decision, you should not leave any stones unturned. Getting professional assistance from a Registered Franchise Consultant may be one of the best resources you can employ and since the company selling the franchise / “biz-op” pays the fee, my service is free to you. You will be able to save considerable time and effort, as well as learn about opportunities that you are unaware of…for instance the right business for you may be one that you have never heard of, and would not even guess. Why not work from home… …and enjoy the advantages of…living where you work & working where you live. Betty Bender once said, “When people go to work they shouldn’t have to leave their hearts at home.” A modern-day version of Betty’s quote would be…”When people go to work, they shouldn’t have to leave home—period!” Today, the home-based franchise industry is growing exponentially, enabling people who desire to be self-employed the opportunity to run legitimate and successful businesses with relatively low complexity and cost. So, why not work from home? Who wouldn’t prefer a ten (10) foot vs. a ten (10) mile (or more) commute? Home-based businesses offer optimum convenience with a relatively low cost and provide greater flexibility / independence for an enhanced lifestyle Home-Based Franchises Mean BIG BUSINESS. By The Franchise Dictionary Magazine Staff Franchise Dictionary Magazine January 2018 THE HOME-BASED BUSINESS MARKET HAS EVOLVED SIGNIFICANTLY over the past decade. What was once considered a second-tier version of employment now has professional appeal. Today, home-based companies have the same stature as businesses in office or retail locations, and the volume of people choosing to launch them is growing. “The mass exodus of employment created a push for entrepreneurship” According to IncFile.com, there are more than 38-million home-based businesses in the U.S., and an increasing number of them are home-based franchises. These franchises combine the value of a franchise system along with the convenience of a home-based business. These days, there are a variety of industries to choose from. Handyman services, painting, financial services, accounting, and sales are just a few of the franchise industries that you can manage out of your living room. Brands such as JaniKing®, which now boasts 12,282 locations worldwide, and CertaPro Painters®, with 385 locations in the U.S., are largely home-based. A key driver for the expansion is the low upfront investment. Traditional franchise models, such as restaurants or retail models, typically require significant capital just to get the doors open, way before the franchisee sees a single dollar in revenue. Many times, traditional franchises could require investments of $200,000 or more and limit the pool of potential buyers due to capital constraints. The homebased model doesn’t have construction or leasehold expenses and typically carries an investment ranging between $50,000 and $75,000, depending on the franchise brand. This lower initial investment allows for the franchisee to get into business with lower capital commitments and look forward to a potentially higher return on investment. LOW OVERHEAD Another advantage of a home-based operation is that once the business is open and running, the overhead expenses associated with managing the day-to-day are very low. You can avoid a commercial lease and the high equipment costs that come with a restaurant or retail business. Since many run without staff or employees, the cost of operation is minimal. While working from home doesn’t necessarily mean fewer hours on the job, it does offer flexibility. Home-based businesses help improve work-life balance. You can spend more time with your family and create a schedule that works with your kids’ activities and home-improvement chores. WHY NOW? Why has this market segment expanded so greatly? The recession between 2008 and 2010 certainly helped. According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 8.7- million jobs were lost from 2007 to 2010. This mass exodus of employment created a push for entrepreneurship, partly out of necessity and partly because professionals were feeling that the corporate world had become just as risky as venturing out on your own. During this time, employers who were hiring were preparing for another economic turndown and thus, paying far more conservatively than they were before the recession. “Small business is a good thing for the economy, and home-based businesses are playing a huge role in that.” NEW ENTREPENEURS The U.S. saw fewer high-paying employee positions and more unemployment and underemployment. Many of these recently unemployed folks had never owned businesses or been entrepreneurs, for which the franchise value proposition is strongest. Coming from professional office settings, these new entrepreneurs could easily transition to home office locations and were more comfortable with lower capital investments. Remember at the time, capital was difficult to come by as banks had tightened their lending and Small Business Administration (SBA) loans were extremely difficult, if not impossible, to obtain. This perfect economic storm pushed people towards home-based franchises and created a market for work from-home business owners. The increased interest led to new, innovative, forward-thinking franchises that offered everything from home handyman work like The Patch Boys® to professional event planning like EventPrep.® Accounting, financial planning, import/export businesses, and others launched franchise models, and the home-based franchise industry took off. SUSTAINABLE GROWTH Since then, the home-based franchise market has continued to see sustainable growth putting more and more people on the road to business ownership. According to the SBA, from 1996 to 2014, the number of small businesses in the U.S. had declined year over year, but in 2014, that trend reversed and more small businesses opened between 2014 and 2015. Perhaps this is due to what the SBA describes as “Micro Companies,” which are firms with 10 employees or less. One thing is for sure, though: Small business is a very good thing for the economy, and home-based businesses are playing a huge role in that. “HORN†In On Franchise / Business Ownership …a monthly post with blurbs, links, and other words-of-wisdom regarding self-employment; career transition; and franchise / business ownership; as well as information for business owners who may be interested in franchising their business. APRIL 2016 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- If You’re Not Happy, You’re Not Successful—So Enjoy the Journey! By Steve Rizzo March 23, 2016 Here’s something to consider. Let’s say your goal is to become a vice president of a big company. After many years of intense stress, worry and an avalanche of emotional, mental and physical overload, you finally achieve your goal, along with all the wealth and prestige that comes with it. Is this success? If you consult a dictionary, the answer would be yes. Webster’s Dictionary defines success like this: 1. The favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors. 2. The attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like. I think it’s amazing that the words “happy†or “happiness†or “joy†are not included in the definition of the word “success.†Unfortunately, our conventional definition of success is simply achieving the goal. Not enough emphasis is placed on the value of experiencing and enjoying the journey, building character and learning life lessons along the way. Here is a hypothetical question. What if someone were to show you a video of yourself as you climbed the ladder to great success? In this video, you see yourself achieving all of your goals and obtaining wealth. During this entire process, however, you also witness how you subjected your body, mind and spirit to intense negative energy along the way. Not only were you unhappy most of the time, but you were able to see how your outright refusal to allow for joy during the process affected your family, friends, associates and your overall well-being. Talk about a downer of a movie. I’ll ask you the question again. Is this success? Here’s the answer: No! I really want you to get this…. If the process of fulfilling your goal is polluted with negative energy and lack of enjoyment, it can only create more unhappiness, even if the outcome is positive in the short term. The happiness that you feel in the moment of reaching “success†is a temporary state dictated by its conventional definition. After the initial euphoria wears off, you are back in the same old negative place, because you’ve carried that same old negative mindset with you. The truth is, it really doesn’t matter how much money you have, or how famous you are, or how many goals you’ve achieved. It makes no difference how big your house is or what industry accolades you’ve racked up in your career. The entire world can view your life as the ultimate success story, but the bottom line is this: If you are not happy, you are not successful! If you are not enjoying yourself on your journey toward your goal, you’re ripping yourself off. Trust me. There are enough people willing to do that for you. The adventure toward any goal is what brings value to it. The path toward the goal is where your life unfolds and happiness is truly meaningful. When you are in the process of working to achieve something, you are experiencing who you are and what you’re made of. Your character is being tested and molded. When you become aware of the importance of every step in the process, you are sending a message to yourself, as well as the entire universe, that you are not only here, but qualified and ready to overcome obstacles along the way. All of which are essential ingredients for success and happiness. There is absolutely no reason why you can’t make a conscious choice to experience and enjoy yourself on the journey toward the goal. If you do, you will no doubt have a profound appreciation of how you earned it. In my view, that’s the ultimate success. If you make this “common-sense success strategy†a habit, it will transform your life. ***************************************************** If you aren’t happy with your job; career; or professional direction, perhaps you aren’t doing what you were meant to do.
