  1. Photo courtesy TexasSports.com A few notes for the opening weekend of baseball. UNLV UNLV was forced to change head coaches in mid-December, as their former skipper, Tim Chambers, stepped away from his five-year stint as Head Coach due to health issues. Former pitching coach Stan Stolte takes over the helm for the 2016 season. This is a rebuild year for UNLV, with most projecting them to finish near the bottom of the Mountain West Conference this season. UNLV will be a fairly young team, (similar to Texas.) They will likely see freshmen contributions at 1B, 3B and they have

  3. Article by Taylor Smith, HornSports Contributor Expect to see new faces on the field for the Longhorns this season. The defending Big 12 champions loss many starters because of graduation or the MLB draft. Notable Longhorns who left the Texas baseball program include Parker French, Chad Hollingsworth, Ben Johnson, Collin Shaw, C.J. Hinojosa and Brooks Marlow. Pitching French pitched 91 innings last season, posting a 5-3 record and was drafted in the fifth round by the Colorado Rockies. Hollingsworth, who was injured much of 2015 and decided to retire from baseball due to injury

  7. He had been rehabbing his shoulder but it looks like he will not be on the roster this season. I don't know the details just yet, but I'd imagine Augie will speak to this subject in his next press conference as official practices get started. Best of luck to Chad. He's a good kid and he pitched a whale of a game against a&m in the Regional a couple of years ago. Hook Em!
  8. LHP Thomas Burbank from Monsignor Kelly High School was in town last week at the Pitching Camp where he told me that his focus was to attend the University of Texas. Well today that dream comes true. Burbank is rated as the #1 rank LHP in the State of Texas, #10 Nationally. This is a young man that has really worked hard in the last year to attain his goal. He also, plays for Ray Deleon and the Houston Banditos. My Two videos on the young man.
  9. Had the pleasure of being out at UFCU Disch Falk Field for the last two days. Had the opportunity to sit and watched Skip Johnson teach his class. That was hard for me to sit and listen as I am restricted to not shoot any videos.. I digress.. Skip can flat out teach and teach he does and the pitchers are all eyes and ears on him.

  11. Longhorn Baseball coaches made the trip to Tomball Texas to host a satellite camp at the Texas Prospect Baseball Academy, home to the Houston Banditos. When Professor Skip Johnson takes the floor, people listen. Listening him speak about his profession you can hear the passion that he has for the game. I made a technical error in recording these. Best to listen to with head phone or actual speakers.
  12. In more recruiting news.. Texas was holding a baseball camp yesterday. The coaches were looking at some of the kids in '17 and '18 class. During this camp, I saw a kid who is a Senior at Carroll High School in Corpus Christi. Outfielder Trace Bucey held an offer from Texas A&M and was committed to A&M, when A&M pulled their offer. A&M then offered RHP Landon Minor out of Bryan Texas. This left Bucey very little opportunity to obtain an offer since it was very close to signing day. Bucey comes from a great family and is a great kid. I reached out to his coach, waiting on a re

  20. One of the top outfielders in the class of 2016-2017 pulled the trigger earlier today. Tristen Lutz a corner outfielder from Arlington Martin High School committed to Tommy Nicholson while on his unofficial visit today. Lutz is entering his Junior year at Martin where he has been a starter since his Freshman year. Arlington Martin is known for producing great baseball talent and Lutz fits the bill. He is a 6-3 207lb player that swings it from the right hand side. Lutz is rated as the 175th best prospect in the class of '16-'17. His commitment has been in the works for awhile as Nicholson h
  21. RHP Blake Goins has opted to transfer to a Junior College. Likely landing spot will be San Jacinto Jr College. There is a ton of back ground info on this that led to his decision. This was his decision, not the coaches. Best of luck Blake!
  22. HornSports has been informed via a source that Andy McGuire, who transferred from the Texas baseball program to the University of South Carolina Aiken in late July has decided to transfer back to the University of Texas and finish up his degree in Austin. We were told that things were going well for Andy at Aiken in his short time on-campus and on the field in South Carolina. He was playing shortstop and even came to the realization that he would likely get drafted (again). During his time at Aiken, McGuire did some fairly deep introspection relative to his future and the role baseball w
