bcherry168 reacted to java in Can Texas Exceed Pre-Season Expectations? (By Taylor Smith)
I am going to call you on this one. I agree with a few points but not many.
- OU may win the conference, but I will wait and see.
- TCU ? New qb + other new critical pieces will make it interesting.
- OSU, "I'm a Man", 3rd. Maybe, but the officiating certainly went their way last year, and it was way over the top. Don't see that happening again.
- Baylor fourth? Playing with 70 scholarship players? Bwahahaha. I will believe that when I see it.
- Texas 5th behind OU and Baylor, who we beat last year. So, that means they are improving, but we aren't. Oh-K. And, our improved sophomores won't beat our sophomores who were freshmen last year. Really?
Those are just 5 of the problems I have. Guess y'all can call me Polyanna. Oh, our qb situation. Boo will be on the field for most of the ND game. I hope. If not, please don't call me Polyanna. K?

I don't know where you have that it's a toss up between Heard and Buechele. Every report I've seen before Heard got hurt was Buechele was out performing Heard in the passing game. Heard's injury and Buechele's performance in the spring game has made it even more in Buechele's favor.

I would be OVERJOYED to get this guy in Austin.

IMO, Singletary matches the criteria for what Baylor needs in their next head coach. He's a disciplinarian, instills dedication and the other things that Baylor's program has been missing. No funny business would happen under his watch, thats for sure. And his players will love him.
He's a defensive mind, so he'll need to have what would ideally be a Briles disciple at OC.
He's also OF Baylor. For a while, he was the face of Baylor. There is no candidate with more connection to the school than him.

If you were a coach with any kind of a future in mind would you walk into a situation like what is current at baylor? You will have to deal with attrition, decommits, guys wanting releases from their LOI, transfers and all the recruiting problems you will face in light of the scandal. Besides all that you will be measured against Briles' record, however tainted it will be. I think they will be lucky to even get a guy like Larry Coker.

Agree for the players already enrolled at BU, but I'd take a couple of the 2016 kids if they're released.

JB, do you remember how the Ags and Bears laughed at Charlie's core values when he was hired? I'm not hearing their laughter now. Are you?

In honor of the manner in which Coach Strong runs our program versus the way Briles shirked his responsibility to run the Baylor program, I am rewatching our victory over the Bears this year. Sweet Justice.
Hook 'em, Charlie!

Maybe they should fire Briles and hire Mike Leach. I am sure Leach would love to play Tech every year. LOL

Mack had a MNC here, but should have had more given the resources and quality of athletes he would get until the later years. Mack did some things that we've never seen here, . . at least not repeatedly. And frankly, I'm glad thats gone.
I think CFS is exactly what this program needed. We were soft. We were lazy. We were entitled. And we were not very talented.
As much as I enjoyed what Mack did for the program, I think he left a lot of touchdowns on the field, so to speak.
Times have changed. IMO, Charlie's core values is very timely with the generation at hand. The kids respond to it and the hard work they're put through. Charlie has also amassed some serious talent and IMO, the coming recruiting season will leave a lot of jaws on the floor.
Or maybe I'm just a hopeless optimistic homer. lol

I have spent many years in the justice system, so let me tell you that the big problem is not the lack of convictions, but the lack of support for the young women who may have been assaulted on the part of school officials. Young women who have been assaulted are emotionally weakened and embarrassed. If they complain to someone and it is blown off, they frequently won't pursue it further.
The shame of Baylor appears to be that they did not create an environment where a fair hearing of the allegations could be had. It was strictly cover up all the way.
If that is the case, the whole bunch of involved individuals should be fired. That includes Starr, Briles, and everyone else involved.

JB, I don't think it's as unbalanced as you might think. There is an "extra" component to this story that is not part of the Tennessee-Bama-OleMiss type of story.
Baylor is a Baptist University. The shining beacon of the Southern Baptist Church. It's whole existence is to teach and graduate young adults with a Christian-based education and atmosphere.
You send your kid to State U., a secular institution, and you might expect some pretty crazy stuff to go on. And it does.
But private, Christian-based institutions are held to a different standard. And that is by their own making and doing. Supposedly.
Myself and others have made a statement that, when you think about it, is so profound it amazes me it gets lost in all this. You can no longer feel good about sending your daughter to Baylor University. Being raised a Southern Baptist myself, that sentence is unthinkable.
I have seen a healthy amount of coverage on the Tennessee and Ole Miss thing. Not so much on Bama. Maybe you're right about them being a sacred cow.
Also – someone above was critical of ESPN about this and being a 17-yr ex-journalist, let me explain. If you will notice, Baylor (Ken Starr) has the entire situation (on Baylor's end) set up to blow over in the most harmless way possible. They hired a law firm whose reputation is specific to this purpose. As the DMN (ex-Baylor, no less) editorial member said in Doc's posted video, EVERYTHING was either being mislabeled as too sensitive to release or being quietly set out to pasture.
Ok, if this is my story (as a journalist), there is no way in hell I'm going to take my jaws off their neck. When a cover up is going on, its blood in the water for a journalist. And it should be. If anything, it gives me hope for my ex-profession to see such dogged reporting. Do. Not. Let. Go.
There's probably leg work going on with regard to the Ole Miss fiasco and the varsity will arrive as soon as the Baylor situation will allow. But for now, you see it through.

What is wrong with just getting behind whoever the coaches think the best player is? Is having faith in the coaches such an outdated concept? Is believing in the idea that each person can get better than they were before such an impossible concept?
