Actually, the 2022 class is kicking arse so far. You couldn't ask for a better start to a class.
I'm the kind of guy who, once his mind is made up, its very difficult to change it. I decided after OU that it was time for Herman to go. As you all know, I had not mentioned anything about it until that point. Today didn't move the needle for me.
The only real significance this game held was that had we lost it, Tom Herman would have been fired within the week. We were supposed to win that game. We should have won that game. A loss would have proven this program was even worse than thought.
IMO, this win only buys Tom Herman another week. There would be no shame in losing to OSU, they're a very good football team. But there is shame in being out of the conference race only halfway into the conference schedule. Of being in the lower tier of the conference. Your goals are really gone. At that point, we're Furniture Bowl bound. Yippee.
I know its a bad look to throw all that money during a time when half this country thinks we're in danger with every breath we breathe. But its also a bad look for Texas to score mediocrity, yet again. We haven't been relevant in years. And there's a boatload of BMDs who are sick of it.
I don't think anything has changed except the date of termination.

If Texas brings Herman back for the 2021 season the current recruiting class is not getting better. The 2022 class will probably be the worst in program history.  Baylor is a 3 win team. Today changes nothing.

One of them, the play at the plate, was a bad call by home blue.  Nonetheless, first live game of the season, and first series of the season for the most part, there is going to be some rust that needs to be knocked off.  As this team progresses, (esp the younger guys,) I expect to see overall cleaner game play.
A few things I'll be watching today:
Ardoin behind the dish Faltine both at the plate and at SS Hodo at the plate-does he make adjustments Stehly at the plate-can he keep up the momentum. Madden on the hill-how will he look in his first start

I agree. Last night's game was very bad.

IMO the overriding issue with this team is the lack of a true point guard or someone that understands how to distribute the basketball within the offensive framework.

College basketball is a PG dominated game and the best teams have that PG or individual that can distribute the ball and run the offense. This might be the hardest and most demanding position on the court and you can't ask players who have never been that true PG learn on the fly at this level.

The lack of a PG on this year's team is on Smart for not recruiting one and this team will continue to struggle all year unless someone miraculously steps up to take that role.

That being said, I do believe Smart was a good hire and will have a PG or two in next years class, so I think we will have to be a little patient with this process.

Herman will not get "total control." The value of the UT brand is too great to entrust in the hands of any one person, especially one who has no real experience in many aspects of the program. They won't let him do things like cancel the Nike contract and switch to UA. They won't allow him to have players arrested and not discipline them. They won't allow him approval of his staff's contracts. They won't let him do a whole lot of things.
Herman may get a lot of discretion, but total control isn't happening. No public university will allow an employee to be unaccountable and to act without oversight, or without proper checks and balances.

They can tell Herman he will have "total control of the football program" but that will never happen, not sure it's ever happened at Texas. His camp tried to force (at least expedite) Texas hand yesterday and that won't go over well and the Memphis game won't do much positive for his negotiations. Our brain trust may be dim witted but they are prideful (great combination) so he might want to tap the brakes with the limited options available at this time. The BMD's fall in and out of love fairly often.

It may be his choice not to coach the TCU game, otherwise I don't understand it.  The guy is a class act.  If he wants to coach the game, and the players want him to coach the game, why not?

I respect Coach Strong, and believe he really cares about the team.  I also believe he gave this job his very best, but for some reason, it just didn't work.  I was concerned about the stress and his health toward the end.  You could see the toll it was taking on him.

If he chose to say goodbye to the team this way, and thinks it is for the best, I understand.  I don't think the administration would deny him the opportunity to coach the team against TCU.

I agree with you on Bruce Weber. Left up to his own devices he will run a program into the ground. He caught lightning in a bottle his last two years at SIU and parlayed that into the Ilini HC position where he had three good years almost entirely on the back of Bill Self's recruiting classes.
