Morgantown, WV -- The Texas Longhorns (33-16, 10-9) faced the West Virginia Mountaineers (27-17, 9-7) at Monongalia County Ballpark in Morgantown, West Virginia for a weekend road series. Rainy weather in Morgantown postponed the first game and forced a doubleheader on Saturday. An outstanding performance from Ace Pete Hansen led the 'Horns to a series openening win.
A pitcher's duel dominated the majority of the game. Pete Hansen allowed only three hits through the first six innings while Mountaineer starter, Jacob Watters, struck out a West Virignia season high 15 batters through six.
A struggling start for both offenses showed only one run scored within the first four frames. A full count solo homer from Murphy Stehly sailed through center field to put the 'Horns on the board, 1-0.
Pitching continued to be the story until Ivan Melendez added to the Texas lead with a sixth inning solo homer to bring the lead to 2-0. Continuing into the seventh, a base hit and a series of walks loaded the bases for the 'Horns. A struggling Mountaineers' bullpen walked Austin Todd with the bases loaded, scoring Mitchell Daly. Melendez followed with a sacrifice flyout to right that drove in Faltine, bringing the Longhorns' lead to 4-0.
West Virignia responded with a 2-run homer from DH Dayne Leonard in which would be their only runs of the game.
Texas added some insurance in the eighth. A single from Ardoin followed by a sacrifice bunt from Messinger put Silas Ardoin in scoring position. Dylan Campbell then drove in Ardoin with an RBI double into the left center gap to give the Longhorns a final 5-2 lead.
