Arlington, TX -- Texas and Oklahoma State kicked off the Big 12 tournament Wednesday morning at Globe Life Field. Texas weathered a long-lasting pitcher's duel to advance in the double elimination tournament with a 4-0 win over the Cowboys.
Texas' ace, Pete Hansen, put together a phenomenal pitching performance, throwing 7.2 scoreless innings. Hansen allowed only three singles and did not allow a runner to reach second base. The lefty finished the morning with 12 strikeouts and only 2 walks.
Tristan Stevens entered in relief of Hansen, quickly finishing the eighth and working around a 1-out baserunner in the 9th to secure the victory for Texas.
Oklahoma State starting pitcher Victor Mederos matched Hansen for much of the morning, as offense for the Longhorns was few and far between through the first five innings. Eventually, the Longhorns found some momentum in the sixth, starting with a single into LF from Trey Faltine. Douglas Hodo III then laid down a perfect bunt followed by an errant throw to first that allowed Faltine to score and give the Texas a 1-0 lead.
The Longhorns momentum remained steady in the seventh, scoring two more runs. Austin Todd led-off with a solo blast to left field, followed by an RBI single up the middle from Faltine to extend the Texas lead to 3-0.
Silas Ardoin gave the 'Horns some insurance in the ninth with a solo homer through left field to conclude the scoring.
The Longhorns will play the winner of Baylor and TCU on Thursday at 4 PM on ESPNU.
