Longhorns Headed to 34th College World Series Appearance After Beating Arizona State 4-2

Question:  How many times could the Texas Longhorns come back to win a best of three series after losing game 1?  Answer:  As many times as they have to.   The Longhorns, after dropping game one to Arizona State and tying the series at one a piece yesterday, worked up more magic on Sunday as they beat the Sun Devils to advance to their 34th College World Series Appearance.  Texas, which had to play from behind in the Austin Regional after losing game one to Kent State, managed to win out to advance to the Super Regional.  No stranger to Omaha, Texas holds 6 national baseball titles and 82 CWS wins (most of any school).  Arizona State, boasting 5 CWS Championships proved to be a formidable opponent in Austin's Super Regional.

Texas starter Sam Stafford was dinged in the first inning for two runs after ASU's Riccio Torrez hit a two run shot over the right field fence.   The Longhorns scored one in the bottom of the first to cut the ASU lead to 2-1.  The Longhorns tied it up in the 5th at 2-2 after a bizzare balk call which sent Brandon Loy to home plate.  The balk run was much needed after the Longhorns left the bases loaded in the 4th with no outs.  The Longhorns then went on the score 2 more runs in the bottom of the 6th and held that lead for the rest of the game.  Hoby Milner, the lightning lefthander went on to get the win for the Longhorns and Corey Knebel earned his 19th save.

Texas will play the Florida Gators in round one of the College World Series which begins on June 18th.  Hook 'em.

Etier and the 'Horns Even the Series With Arizona State

In a "win or go home" situation for the Texas Longhorns, the bats came alive in game two of the Austin Super Regional.  Cole Green got the start for the 'Horns and pitched well giving up only one earned run.  Texas took a 2-1 lead into the 9th inning as the visiting team.  Jordan Etier, who has had a less than stellar postseason at the plate, stepped up to the plate with runners on the corners and ripped a breaking ball over the left field fence.  The Longhorns took a commanding 5-1 lead and Corey Knebel stepped in as the closer and finished off the game in the bottom of the 9th.

Sun Devils Take Game One in Austin from Jungmann, Longhorns

With Taylor Jungmann starting game one of the Austin Super Regional most Longhorn fans through the team had a better than average chance of  beating Arizona State.  On a nationally televised game by ESPN, Jungmann pitched pretty darn good - giving up one earned run in 7 1/3 innings pitched.  The demise of the Longhorns were the errors that resulted in 2 unearned runs Arizona State added in the third inning.  A hard hit grounder that bounced off of Tant Shepard's glove at first base and a mound-grounder that Jungmann easily grabbed and threw to second base (only to find nobody there to catch it) resulted in Arizona State taking a 2-0 lead.  Texas cut the lead in half by scoring one run in the bottom of the third but Arizona State added to its lead by scoring an insurance run in the 8th.  The Sun Devils won by a score of 3-1 and force the Longhorns to play from behind in the series, much like the regional series forced them to do.

If fans in the stand and elsewhere heard the chants of "Rudy, Rudy, Rudy" from Sun Devil fans in the stands, it wasn't because they were watching the Golden Domer movie Rudy.  Instead they were cheering for ASU's freshman outfielder Johnny Ruettiger (nephew of Dan "Rudy" Ruettiger, walk-on football player at Notre Dame and basis for the movie Rudy).  While Arizona State did win game one, Tempe Arizona is a long way from Touchdown Jesus and Southbend, Indiana.  The Longhorns present Cole Green on the mound tonight in hopes of tying the Super Regional Series at one a piece.

Colt McCoy's Wife Knows Something Mack Brown Doesn't?

When I read the articles about Colt McCoy's wife, Rachel, saying that UT Football players were offered meals and other benefits I just about spit my Sierra Nevada out of my mouth!  First of all she is telling us something we already know.  These players eat out at restaurants and yes, even visit bars, and folks are always trying to buy them meals and drinks.  As a fan, that is the most honest, genuine gesture one can make to show appreciation for the things these guys do for our team.  I remember I was in a bar on 6th Street back in the mid 90's and Kris Clack and Brandon Nava were in the bar also.  My friends and I were fortunate enough to have them sit at our table for a few minutes.  We chatted about the basketball and football seasons and the waitress rolled around (actually I think one of us went up to the bar) and we ordered drinks for everyone.  I do not remember whether or not either of them drank what we bought, but it did not cross our minds that this would be an NCAA violation.  So yes, Rachel McCoy is probably correct - players are most likely offered meals quite frequently.  This is common sense.  Happens in Southbend, Norman, Los Angeles, State College and every other football town in America.  Doesn't mean players are soliciting freebies... they are just living their lives.  Being an athlete inherently brings that kind of stuff.

Secondly, what in the heck is Colt MCcoy's wife doing calling Colin Cowherd and discussing this kind of stuff?  I know the NFL season is in jeopardy, but isn't she a nurse or something like that?   The University and the athletic program staff know how to do their jobs quite well.  Additionally, we all know that the Texas Athletic Program is like a family and any concerns from the McCoy family can easily be handled internally like a family.

Longhorns to Host Arizona State in Super Regional

After losing on day two of the regionals, the Texas Longhorns had to win 3 straight games to advance to the Super Regionals which begin on Friday.  The Horns draw Arizona State, a school that has a storied baseball program, much like the University of Texas.   The Longhorns have had a slew of players taken in the MLB Draft which began yesterday, including Taylor Jungmann who went 12th overall to the Milwaukee Brewers.  Arizona State is waiting on an appeals ruling which is essentially the only reason the Sun Devils are involved in post season play.  Accused of NCAA violations and banned from 2011 post-season play, ASU filed an appeal and is waiting on the NCAA to render a judgment.  Until then, the Sun Devils are playing baseball.  GOOD BASEBALL, as evidenced by their cruising through the Tempe, Arizona Regional with a 3-0 record.

It should be an exciting time in Austin on Friday and Saturday (and Sunday if necessary).  Texas is looking to get tback to the College World Series, where they have made 33 appearances, amassed 82 wins and won 6 national championships.  The Super Regional games will be televised on ESPN and ESPN2.  Hook 'em.

Horns Take Down Texas State, Kent State on Sunday to Advance to Regional Final Game

The Texas Longhorns are as "scrappy" as "scrappy" gets - today.  Playing a 1:00 pm game against Texas State and needing to win that game to earn a chance to play undefeated Kent State at 6:30 pm.  The Longhorns did just that.  Texas threw it all on the table and managed to beat Texas State by the score of 4-3 after trailing 2-0 early in the game.  The star of the game was Kevin Lusson who hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th inning with the bases loaded.   Corey Knebel ended up with the win but Cole Green pitched well as the starter for the game.

Kent State hits Grand Slam, Beats Texas 7-5

ALL pitchers have bad days.  Koufax, Cy Young, Bob Gibson, Bob Feller, Lefty Grove, Nolan Ryan, Taylor Jungmann.  Taylor Jungmann??  No, Taylor Jungmann is not in the league of these folks quite yet but the Junior Longhorn pitcher is one of the hottest names in college baseball.  Unfortunately he was roughed up in his first start in the Austin Regionals yesterday giving up 7 runs on 8 hits and was replaced by Andrew McKirihan.  After the 6th inning, Texas found themselves in a 7-2 hole and did not score any more runs until the 9th inning when the rally fell short and they scored only 3 more runs.

The Kent State Golden Flashes are undefeated in regional play and face the winner of the Texas vs. Texas State game which begins at 1:00 pm central time on Sunday.  The Longhorns must win 2 games today if they are to make it to the Austin NCAA Regional Championship game on Monday against Kent State.  Put the rally caps on and Hook 'Em Horns!!!
