Texas came through against the Baylor Bears today with a much-needed 6-1 victory today on day 2 of the Big XII Tournament in Oklahoma City. Taylor Jungmann pitched a complete game one-hitter to keep the Longhorns alive. The "Horns desperately needed a win to remain viable in the loser's bracket and live to play another day in Oklahoma City. Texas may get another shot at the Mizzouri Tigers as the team plays the loser of the Mizzou/Oklahoma State which begins at 4:00 pm today.Â

Nathan Thornhill started on the mound for the Longhorns on Wednesday as they opened up Big XII Tournament play today in Oklahoma City. He was pinged for two runs by the fourth inning and was then replaced by Hoby Milner, then Kendall Carillo who combined gave up 4 more runs. The Longhorns scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and eighth innings. Texas, the favorite to win this game, will have an uphill battle if they are to make it to the Big XII Championship game.  The 'Horns will play Baylor at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, who lost to the Oklahoma State Cowboys today by the score of 6-2. If Texas is to advance in tourney play they must move baserunners better and convert when runners are in scoring position.

Desperately needing a win to stay alive and have an opportunity to play in the championship game from the loser's bracket, the Longhorn softball team lost 5-3 to UL-Lafayette Saturday evening in Austin eliminating the Longhorns from post-season play. Rachel Fox lasted two innings and gave up 3 runs before Longhorn Ace Blaire Luna replaced her and gave up two runs of her own. The Longhorns had a great regular season in which many folks had high hopes of this team pushing deep into postseason play. The University of Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns will face the University of Houston Cougars in the Championship game of the Austin Regional.

The Longhorn Women's Softball team, ranked #3 nationally, lost to the University of Houston Cougars on Saturday in the Austin Softball Regional. This means the Longhorns will play again tonight in the Loser's Bracket hoping to stay alive with a win against the Ragin' Cajuns of the University of Louisiana--Lafayette. The loss came as a bit of surprise since the Cougar Softball team is unranked, but not a huge shocker. UH has beatnen several quality (ranked) opponents throughout the year including Oklahoma State, LSU (twice) and Oklahoma State. The Longhorn team could not get the bats going therefore giving starting pitcher and LOnghorn Ace Blaire Luna no run support. Hopefully the team takes a breather and finds the bats again before facing ULL tonight to stay alive in the hometown regional.

I am a big fan of Rick Barnes. I am a big fan of his ability to bring Texas from a mediocre basketball program under Tom Penders to a perennial college basketball contender that recruits McDonald's All-Americans. Texas, under the Barnes regime has put out a good to great product on an annual basis and has advanced to the NCAA Tournament for 12 consecutive seasons. Top that off with 12 consecutive 20-win seasons and an overall winning percentage .725 (in and out of conference) and you have a damn good program.
With that being said the Texas teams have not performed as expected, come tournament time. The Longhorns reached the Elite 8 in the 2007-2008 season and since then have been ousted in the first or second rounds. Sure, I am a realist and understand that it takes both luck and skill to advance in the tournament and also think it is an amazing achievement to reach the tourney 12 straight years, but a raise now just doesn't seem to be right. The state's public eduction budget is in severe crisis and it doesn't look like our Governor is going to use the 9 billion in Rainy Day funds to assist with the budget shortfall.
I guess what I am saying is that sure, Barnes is GREAT AND the Texas Athletic Program continues to make money every year - but the state budget is in terrible shape and it sends a bad message to live like a king when the state is living like a pauper. Make the Sweet 16 next year and give him his raise then....
The #6 ranked Longhorn baseball team lost a close game at Disch-Faulk today as they fell 2-1 to the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Tech scored both of the team runs in the second inning while Texas managed to put together a bit of a rally in the ninth inning as they scored one run while loading the bases several times. Short Stop Brandon Loy grounded out to end the game with the bases loaded. Cole Green, who is 2-3 on the season, gets the loss for the Horns.   Texas plays the rubber match with the Red Raiders tomorrow at 1:00 pm. For box score and additional information on the game, please visit http://www.texassports.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/041611aaa.html.

With Garrett Gilbert's mediocre play at the QB position last year expect the storyline from here to the season opener to be exciting... Maybe even racy.... No pun intended.... From the rumbings on the Forty Acres Chase McCoy, brother of former standout Longhorn QB Colt McCoy, has made spring ball interesting. McCoy connecting with Patrick McNamara on an 11 yard touchdown pass in the spring game (immediately after a Gilbert turnover) seemed to ignite a debate over who will fall under center in September. With all this being said, Gilbert is still the more experienced guy. Taking over for an injured Colt McCoy against Alabama in the 2009 National Championship game and then being the #1 guy last season, the job is more than likely still Garrett's to lose.
No matter which player is named the starter, the offense should have a revamped look with Harsin and Applewhite as Co-Offensive Coordinators. Young guns they are, but they will definitely keep it real. With a name like McCoy the possibilities are certainly endless, but for now we can sit back and root for all of the guys wearing burnt orange to make us proud next season. Bring on the AIR ASSAULT!

The Longhorns took the court tonight in the quarterfinals of the Big XII tournament in Kansas City and looked like a team on a mission. Taking a 23 point lead into halftime, Texas came out in the second half and never let the Sooners get any closer than 13 points. The defense looked great and the team shooting percentage was around 50% from the field.
The 'Horns get the winner of the Texas A&M/Mizzouri game in tomorrow's semifinal matchup at 8:30 p.m. Texas has beaten Texas A&M twice this season and Mizzou once in Austin midway through the season. Everything points to a showdown in the championship game with Big XII North powerhouse Kansas, whom the Longhorns beat by 11 points in Lawrence back in January.Â
Hold on the your hats.... It's gonna be a wild ride.
