  1. I've watched a good amount of football in my day and no RB has made me drop my jaw like Bijan. I make my wife watch replays and she (of not football knowledge or interest) is even able to realize how freaky some of his moves are. Is he the most freakishly athletic RB we have ever had? I know this is a bold question to ask. Ricky and Earl were obviously great but their style was more prototypical down hill runner, run you over and occasional make a guy miss (Benson in this category too). Jamaal was speed, one cut and he's gone. Bijan has enough power and a really good stiff arm. He can run away from the defense if there is a hole. I think his greatest attribute is the ability to make guys miss with a juke, spin or change in running speed - probably one notch below Reggie Bush in that regard. He is also a great receiver, better than the aforementioned RBs. Old heads, don't jump down my throat on this one, just an interesting question and comparison. Either way, make sure to enjoy the show this fall, likely the last time we see Bijan in burnt orange.

  2. Good to have Johnny (aka Card's pr dept.) back with us.

  4. If that's true, its wrong. Just wrong. Whoever Sark puts out there should get our full support.

  5. Because we haven't had nearly enough discussion on this topic, i figured I would weigh in on it. I'm not a Ewers or Card guy either, I'm 100% whoever will run the offense the way Sark wants and needs it to be ran and can win games. I saw some really good things from Card towards the end of last year, but I do believe he is somewhat limited. I don't think he goes through his progressions quickly and gets happy feet too fast (coachable). He is really good at 1, 2 go. I also don't think, which has been discussed ad nauseum, he can take the top off the defense with downfield throws on a consistent basis. This will limit the playbook and allow a defense to play closer to the LOS. One major plus is I think he is crafty and agile which might come in very handy with a young OL. Ewers is a gunslinger and can make every throw in the book. Having him back there completely opens up the playbook and could make things easier for Bijan. Not 100% sure about his mobility, but I don't believe he is as mobile as Card, but I also don't think he is a statue. The big negative on him (and it's a huge one) is that he is a gunslinger and will turn the ball over. Those turnovers will cost the Longhorns valuable possessions and could cost them games. Big risk, big reward type of QB. So, I have no idea what Sark is going to do. Playing Card is going with the somewhat safer pick and will put the offense on Bijan's back (as well as the opposing defense). Going with Ewers makes things wide open for the offense, but is a HUGE gamble that could completely backfire. If it was me, 20 years ago I would go with the safer pick and go with Card. Today, now that I'm older I'm much more the gambler type and would say F it, lets role. Thank god I'm not the head coach and have to make that choice. I have the luxury of sitting here giving my opinion behind a keyboard with no consequences.

  6. That's what he says. IF they strung the Longhorns along like that and even lied to them the night before then I'm not losing any sleep over him. I'm not at all disappointed in Jordan for flipping (he has every right to make his best decision), I'm very disappointed in his parents for doing it that way. Just be an adult and tell Texas (and other schools) what you're going to do and be done with it. Golden opportunity missed to teach your child the proper way to deal with decisions. Maybe I'm wrong, but I certainly wouldn't let either of my kids do that. Guess what, both of my kids had to adult up recently and tell a couple of companies that they decided to go in another direction. I was proud. Okay, i'll get off my soap box.

  7. as long as he maintains a 2-1 ratio of TDs/INTs per game So if he throws 3 ints then he better throw 6 TDs

  8. Notes . . . – Tempo was good. The ball was 'alive." – Texans scout at practice today – Argye Hall back on team "when time is right." – Hates losing Angilau, but is confident in Hutson, Roberson and Parr as back up centers. (This confirms to me that Hutson was awarded the G spot and thus moved Angilau to backup center). – Two players who could play any spot on the offense – J Whitt and Worthy. – QBs played fine but missed opportunities. Looks forward to film review with them. – Fumbles were fixable things. – Team ran 100 plays in 100 degree weather and ran gassers afterward. – Consistency is big for Savion Red and Brennan Thompson. All notes are from TFB.

  9. Disagree. It is some times said that God's blessing to us is sometimes NOT answering our prayers. I don't know about Saban, but if we had gone the Meyer route we'd probably be in a mess by now.

  11. This evening's practice notes from TFB Starting OL LT Kelvin Banks LG Hayden Conner C Jake Majors RG DJ Campbell RT Christian Jones Second group LT Andrej Karic LG Malik Agbo C Connor Robertson RG Neto Umeozulu RT Cam Williams First DL today Sorrell Broughton Murphy Oghoufo Casey Cain in non-contact jersey. Troy Omeire and Jaden Alexis held out today. Omeire was given "rest" Jonathan Brooks was out sick. Both QBs looked sharp in routes on air. Both had their moments in 7 x 7 but Card probably looked better. Ewers had his struggles at times. Card threw a pick 6 to Jerrin Thompson. He then threw a TD pass to Jwhitt. Terrance Brooks had a great day at CB. He locked down Thompson and snagged an INT from Card. Keilan Robinson and Jaydon Blue are not good at all in pass pro.

  12. A few more practice notes from OB - Defense was very active. Had three interceptions and the offense also put the ball on the ground four times with fumbles. Said the line of scrimmage was very physical. - No separation with the quarterbacks coming out of the scrimmage. He described the race for the starting spot as being very close. - Despite the injuries on Saturday, Sark said the team psyche is great. They had one of their most energized practices on Monday.

  15. He had a catch that was very impressive in the video from yesterday, and then this... Glad that it seems to be something as mild as parking boot removal. We don't know details about other issues he has been having on campus. Having a bit more information this morning, I'm more inclined to believe he isn't done for at Texas but it sounds like he really needs to turn it around to capitalize on his athletic opportunities.

    2023 Recruiting Board/Thread

You are comparing us to the best team in the country and saying we aren't ready for the SEC. You are arguing apples and oranges. Nobody except Georgia recruits like Alabama. So maybe we aren't ready for a SEC championship but that doesn't mean we aren't ready for the move. We had a top 5 class last year and will probably have a top 5 class next year. We may not be able to compete with Alabama in 2 years but we could be if we get another class like that and we build the trenches and the coaches develop the players they recruit. Turnarounds can be fast once they start. Ask Alabama. They had a missing decade then hired Saban went 7-6 in first year and then... I'm not saying Sark is going to turn it around. Just that a turnaround can happen fast.

  17. I saw it posted after Baxter that Texas has the most players in the top 70 for 2023 class. Now, between 70 and 200 we only have 1 more player, so depending on your cut-off you can make it look good or bad. We do have a lot of guys in the 200s for a total of 14 in the top 300 (Tre Wisner just outside at 314). Compared to Bama who also has 14 in the top 300. Bama is a tough school to be compared to and I do agree that they have more quality across the board but Texas is not far off at this point.

  18. But this is TEXAS, dont you know the fan base always knows better than the HC. If I guess correctly it really won't matter who is at QB, because I think we are going to see an offense that hasn't ever been seen in these parts, I think we are going to feed #5 the rock, and when defenses load the box receivers are going to get single coverage and get the ball in space, and 10 yd slants are going to be taken to the house....OK I will take off the burnt orange glasses for now

  19. TFB reporting this evening that their sources are split on who the starting QB will be. CJ Vogel posted the story, thinks Card will be named the starter. Doesn't think Ewers has played up to his hype thus far. He also thinks Sark will name the starter after the weekend scrimmage.

  21. I don’t have the privilege of seeing live practices so I guess I’m stuck with the press reports perpetuating the lies of the HC press conferences about a close qb battle that doesn’t exist. That and the Card family members on this board. Just win baby is all that really matters.

  22. After reading that news and knowing these are old Nike execs and LeBron's childhood friend, it makes me wonder if this effectively rules out any chance of Nelson flipping to A&M. Admittedly I have no idea if his visit to College Station was strategic on his part or if his interest is/was real, but the Ags are an Adidas school and the exact opposite of anything Los Angeles.

  25. Some practice observations: Cain was the star of the night, although he did have the no contact jersey on. They would hold his jersey and he still got open deep, a few times the QB's didn't find him, but he was in the corners of the end zone in space a bunch. Bijan looked like an alien, he runs so low, with his pads always forward, and effortlessly makes multiple direction changes with instant speed bursts to stay outside the pile in the green space. We could be in for a real show. He hung around the stands and signed autographs and was living happily in the moment. Bijan's "brother" Keilan looked like the next best runner, and he got a lot of carries. There was a ton of drops, Brennen did some pushups after one TD drop, and the crowd loved it. It was a tough night for him, he dropped a bunch. He's fast as hell, and we were happy to see him get 2 TD's to redeem himself a bit. Worthy also did some pushups on a TD drop, again the crowd loved it. There were a few bum rushes from the D, and I had visions of Arky. It could be a long year again. Ewers looks for the deep ball and attempts it a lot, with some success. He led int's, with 3 in a row at one time, mostly in the midfield. The D had advantage it appeared in these situations. Perhaps they have seen these routes so much? He had a few sacks, I'm curious to see him run and scramble, which he didn't. Card threw less deep balls, and connected on a few. He looked superior in the short to mid game. He didn't force the long ball. Card also did kick holding duty for the right footed kicker. I didn't see a kickoff make the end zone, not sure if that was the plan? We may miss Dicker a lot. In the sprints at the end, Card and Ewers were having it out, with Card winning every time, usually from the 1st step. There seemed like a bunch of time wasted running so many QB's while everyone else waited. 5 of them. Malik looks like the biggest guy on the field, he only played a little, with a noticeable limp.

  26. I have never seen talk of Texas pursuing Matthews at safety. Coach Joseph handles corners, and he's Matthews' recruiter.

  27. I would think without a credible deep ball the defense has a smaller field to defend, which could make "ball control" more challenging.

  31. Follow up to previous post. Just a quick review of how I went about this. Basically, I wanted to see when it came to HS recruiting, how Texas compared to the 6 teams that were contending for playoffs and national championships over the past 5 years. We may end up being ranked #3 or #4 or whatever, but I wanted a way to see how big the gap was between us and them. Now let's look at how Sark is doing in his 2 years so far 2022-2023. Again, these numbers represent what percent of the class that fell into these categories instead of raw numbers. My reasoning was that 5 out of 20 is better than 5 out of 25 and not equal. Top 50 - Alabama 31.8%, Georgia 20.8%, Ohio State 17.1%, Texas 12.0%, Clemson 10.0%, Notre Dame 8.9%, Oklahoma 4.9%. Top 100 - Alabama 56.8%, Georgia 37.5%, Ohio State 24.4%, Clemson 22.5%, Texas 22.0%, Notre Dame 20.0%, Oklahoma 17.1%. Top 200 - Alabama 75.0%, Georgia 60.4%, Ohio State 56.1%, Notre Dame 57.1%, Oklahoma 43.9%, Texas 38.0%, Clemson 22.5% Top 300 - Alabama 84.1%, Ohio State 80.5%, Notre Dame 73.3%, Oklahoma 68.3%, Georgia 60.4%, Texas 58.0%, Clemson 53.0%. Actual number of players signed in the top 50 - Alabama 14, Georgia 10, Ohio State 7, Texas 6, Clemson 4, Notre Dame 4, Oklahoma 2. Improvement signs for Texas - From 2018 to 2022, Alabama signed more than 3 times as many top 50 players as Texas did and for Sarks 2 years, that has dropped to about twice as many. Georgia had also signed over 3 times as many top 50 players and now that is less than twice as many and Ohio State had signed 2 1/2 times as many and now we are basically equal with them. A positive 2023 class tidbit - Only one team has signed a higher percentage of players ranked in the top 50 than Texas has. Of course, it's Alabama as 30% of their class currently ranks in the top 50. Texas's number has jumped to 18.2% putting them ahead of both Georgia and Ohio State. That 18.2% is more than double what Texas did from 2018-2022 when only 8.1% of our classes were in the top 50.

  32. Don't care about preseason polls. I care about the post season polls. If we win more than 6 games we will probably crack into a poll or two.

  33. Texas should not be ranked in any preseason top 25.

  35. Where have you seen reports on the scrimmage? I thought it wasn't open to media sources? *serious question. Not doubting you at all. I hate scrimmage reports. You never know what your getting. If the D dominates the O then you either take away that the D is awesome or the O is awful and vice versa. If reports say the D won some and the O won some then it's either both are really good or both are really bad. No win situation, imo.

    Baseball Purge

We have added a RHP from Baylor in Cody Howard. We didn't put an offer to Tulo like I guess Chip wants to claim. Secondly, Tulo put out a demand to USC to upgrade their baseball department and facilities of upto $100M and they refused and he declined. Not to mention that both Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton offered and he declined both of them. He wanted to stay closer to the Texas baseball department to help and work with the players. It's been out there for about a month, but if Chip feels like he is putting something out there as new news, as usual he is bad at it.

  39. IT wrote today that TE Duce Robinson of Phoenix, AZ continues to be intrigued by the additions to Texas' class. Sources telling them Texas and USC are his top two schools and he's eager to see Austin in a few weeks. The Texas baseball coaches are also interested, so my guess is they'll be involved with his upcoming official visit. https://247sports.com/player/duce-robinson-46086662/

  43. While I think Bijan is a more complete back with size, strength, agility and speed, one of my favorite RBs at Texas was Eric Metcalf. Ricky was great and Earl was a beast, but Metcalf was something else. He was a swiss army knife for Texas back in the day. I remember just being in awe of his ability back then. I could watch old footage of him for hours. As far as non-UT rbs, it still is hands down Barry Sanders. The things he did in college and the pros was just spectacular.

I’m not there and don’t know the young man but I hate to see people blow a second chance because there might not be another. And…. I don’t know many former or current students who haven’t had there run ins with UTPD. Especially parking police. Me included.
