Great game! Although Alabama doesn’t look as good with the new young QB, it’s very impressive to beat them at home by double digits. Defense looks improved for the most part besides giving up some big plays in the 4th. Anthony Hill is going be a star. Wife is a little pissed we beat her alma mater but I loved it Hookem9 points -

View from the Cheap Seats-PreSeason

View from the Cheap Seats-Pre-season Edition Cash it in Year Embrace the Hate We are getting close to the very best time of the year. Not long and the temps will start to fall, the leaves will begin to change and we enter the greatest time and season of the year, COLLEGE FOOTBALL. Stop us if you have heard this before but this is the year TEXAS turns the page. Yep, it is Burnt Orange Kool Aid time, and it is hard not to ask for a double shot of the good stuff. Nor is it just the fans of Horn drinking the Kool Aid. The BigXII Media poll picked TEXAS to finish #1 in the Conference for the 1st time since the conference ended division play. One Vegas prognosticator picks TEXAS with the 4th best odds to make the playoffs (cue Jim Mora’s classic line: PLAYOFFS?????) Time to hop on the bandwagon. What a fitting way it would be to leave the current conference behind, last SWC title, 1st BigXII title and last BigXII title while we are members. Yes, the bar for the 2023 season is winning the BigXII. This is not to say reaching the BigXII title game but losing is a “failure” of a season as there are degrees of success but it certainly would be an example of leaving meat on the bone. . . and the cheap seats doesn’t like leaving meat on the bone. Nor are we alone. Sark has even coyly alluded to this being a special final BigXII season. Currently TEXAS has the 4th best odds of reaching the college football playoffs and a 1-2 loss TEXAS who wins the BigXII would make a strong case but our prime directive, win the Big XII. Even if Sark stumbles and finished 9-3, a BigXII title still "cashes in the year" Reasons for optimism: So why all the unbridled optimism? Well except for perinial Horn supporter Joel Klatt who is now taking the Missouri/Show Me approach. Pretty easy really. TEXAS returns 15 of 22 starters from the Baylor game (last game of the 2022 regular season) and has added some real talent with transfers and the new recruiting class. It starts with Quinn Ewers who is back at the QB spot along with the entire offensive line. They will be joined by TEXAS’ Top 4 pass catchers from 2022 and augmented by the return from injury of Isaiah Neyor as well as transfer from Georgia, AD Mitchell who is currently running 1st string. Let’s talk returning pass catchers for just a bit, Xaiver Worthy, #1 receiver in 2022, is back and he has a chance to leave TEXAS as our top WR in history. He is joined by Mr 1st Down, Jordan Whittingham and by arguably the #2 TE in the nation, Ja’Tavion Sanders who finished 2022 with the best season for a TE at TEXAS ever in passes caught, yards and TDs. Couple this with TEXAS returning 7 players who started games in 2022 along the offensive line. This should be TEXAS' best offenisve line sinc 2005, they are both talented and now at least 8 deep. We should say a word about Quinn Ewers. We love everything we have read about his off season. He got serious, cut his Duck Dynasty look, took his eating and weight training seriously but most important, he’s worked hard to learn the playbook and improve his footwork. Part of the optimism is Quinn taking that next step in his development. Not far behind QE on the optimism chart is a returning OL is lead by Pre Season All American pick (in only his 2nd year) Kelvin Banks which features returning starters at every spot. Some of his talented fellow 2022 recruits are pushing players ahead of them for playing time, lead by 5 star recruit DJ Campbell. This should be the best OL since the 2005 title group. Biggest news along the OL is DJ Campbell pushing his way onto the RG spot. One can have a really good debate as to whether the WRs group or our offensive line unit is the strongest unit on the team. Both now feature depth and talent. Should mention the very talented but only lightly untested RB room. Johnathan Brooks and his 6.6 ypc is back along with speedster Keilen Robinson. Joining them is true freshman CJ Baxter who is already getting some run with the 1s. On the other side of the ball is Coach K's defense which is both a reason for optimism and a cause for concern. Coach K's Ds generally show up in year 3. He has impressive talent at every position. Now some of that talent is young and unproven. Secondary should be outstanding with a nice mix of experiance and talented youth. 2022's star Jaylen "I was screwed out of the BigXII DPOY honors" Ford is an outstanding LB but DeMo has moved onto the show. True Freshman Anthony "Ant" Hill has made serious noise but again, young and unproven. We think the DL will be good and the ends/edges/buck spots are loaded with talent, do they emerge? Sark is not only a GREAT recruiter but he has built an amazing staff. The offseason addition of WR coach Chris Jackson has largely been hailed as an excellent upgrade. Additionally, Sark added Paul Chryst to his offensive analyst staff. Add this to what is easily the most talented team in the conference. Causes for concern: Let’s start by setting the record. The Cheap Seats are major fans of Sark and we’d like to see him coach here for the next 15 years, win a couple National Titles and have a statue built next to DKR’s and Mack Brown’s. Not only is he a GREAT recruiter who has built an impressive staff (have we mentioned that?) but he seems to relate very well to his players on a genuine level. The Cheap Seats prides itself on not being fanboys and of being as objective as we can. Time to pull back the curtain and be candid about some issues. Let’s begin with what we see as the biggest question mark for the team in 2023. Can Sark take the next step as a head coach and lead this team from “great recruiting/hype” to championship? There is no question that Sark has a great offensive mind along with being the best recruiter TEXAS has seen since the days of Mack Brown selling ice cubes to eskimoes. The question remains, can Sark excel as the Head Coach? He enters his 10th year as a HC at 3 different stops. In those 3 stops, he has yet to achieve 10 wins in a season. After his initial 2 season at TEXAS he is an under achieving 13-12, one of the worst opening 2 year records in TEXAS football history. 7 of TEXAS’ conference games + Bama in 2022 came down to 1 score games, Sark was 2-5 in those 7 games. As DKR said, potential means you ain’t done it yet. 2 of those losses occurred in the 2nd half of games following double digit leads. And on the road at K-State, TEXAS seemed ready to give up another 2nd half lead only to have Jaylen Ford save the day with another timely turnover. Flip either loss and TEXAS plays for the BigXII title in 2022. By Sark’s own admission, too often he got away from his All Gas No Brakes approach to play calling.Contributing to those problems was a pedestrian 62% Red Zone TD scoring. Championship level is 70%+. We will be tracking Red Zone TD scoring % all year. In the 4th quarter of the 7 games referenced above, TEXAS has been outscored 51-72. Can Sark fix the problems, and can he have TEXAS ready to play week in and week out? We shall see. Our 2nd most pressing concern is the Defense which has gotten better each year under Sark/Coach K but this is not yet a championship D and still lacks a dominant pass rusher. TEXAS simply cannot get off the field on 3rd and 4th downs, see the stats below. The expectations are high. Now coupled with our #2 concern is a lack of pass rush since Joseph Ossai left the 40. This is not for a lack of young talent, it’s there. Just no one has stepped up and seized that role. . . ..YET. And for all the bright spots on the offense, TEXAS rushed for 2700 yards last year behind one of the Top 5 RBs to ever step onto the 40 Acers. The bad news, BiJan Robinson and Roshon Johnson have departed for the NFL taking 2200 of those rushing yards with them. While there is great talent at the RB spot, it is unproven as of today. Good news, RB is the position where it is the easiest to transition from one level to the next. Significant Arrivals AD Mitchell-WR-Transfer from Geogia where he scored twice in the playoffs. He’s a big talented target who will make it hard for teams to double Worthy. Jontay Cook-WR-True freshman recruit who has already pushed his way into the 2 deep. Sark landed 3 REALLY good WR recruits in addition to AD, so far Cook has taken the lead. Jalen Catalon-S-Transfer from Arkansas. Comes with the dreaded “if he can stay healthy” caveat. But if he can. . . NFL quality S. CJ Baxter-RB-pushing for the lead role but even at RB2, he’ll log plenty of carries. Galvin Holmes-CB-Transfer from Wake Forest where he was a 2 year starter. Not making huge off-season noise but at a minimum, will provide quality depth. And update, he has been getting more notice lately. Isaiah Neyor-WR-Transfer from Wyoming. Added this year as he missed last year due to injury but seems to be back 100% now. Sark has added some significant talent at WR this year. Ant Hill-True Freshman. Likely in a situational role at LB/pass rusher Look for a bunch of the 2023 recruiting class to push their way onto the 2 deep including a surprise from this years clearly under rated OL class, Trevor Goolsby running 2nd team OT. Though we suspect Cam Williams 1st off the bench at OT. Our way too early prediction: 10-2 BigXII title. Dark horse shot at the CFB playoffs. Yes, we think Sark takes the next step as a Head Coach. Yes, we are drinking Tito’s laced Burnt Orange Kool Aid from the Big Gulp. After being screwed in 2022, Jaylen Ford earns BigXII Defensive Player of the Year honors. Not to be outdone, Xavier Worthy picks up the BigXII Offensive Player of the Year and is a Biletnikoff Finalist. Sadly he won't win simply because there are too many talented pass catchers taking the field with him. TEXAS to the Cotton Bowl (as the Sugar is a CFP site this year) vs USC, who is making a return trip from last year when they were beaten by Tulane. Back-to-back Cotton Bowl losses for USC is our prediction. As the title says, this is Sark’s “cash it in” year. Color us buyers 2022 Stats that Matter: #88 TEXAS’ 3rd down conversion success rate on D. Not good enough #80 TEXAS’ 4th down conversion rate on D. Not good enough. 62% Red Zone TD scoring %, needs to be closer to 70% 0-10 Sark has been a Head Coach now for 10 years, ZERO 10 win seasons 2-5 TEXAS record in 1 score games Could not find a 2022 season highlight but never hurts to go back and re-visit that magnificent beat down in the Red River War. Really looking forward to 14 (15????) write ups this year.9 points -

View from the Cheap Seats-Wyoming Sore backs Sark quoted Mack from 2005 during his post game presser. "We went into the game with sore backs from people slapping our backs and telling us how great we are". On a weekend where it seemed most of the top teams started slow, TEXAS was no different. Did you really think there wouldn’t be a hangover after Bama? Facing a well coached, highly experienced team, the Longhorns came out of the gates stumbling bumbling and not doing much rumbling for 3 quarters. It has been said that TEXAS is the game everyone circles on their schedule pre-season. Wyoming certainly treated this like TEXAS treated Bama the week before. They came in with nothing to lose, played well but by the end of the night, simply did not have the Jimmy’s and Joe’s to get it done. They started their back up QB who did his best Josh Allen, big kid big arm, impersonation. Ewers and the offense came back to earth after the great performance vs Bama in the 1st 3 quarters. Between dropped passes, mistimed throws and false start penalties, TEXAS’ offense was stuck in low gear to open the game. Shades of the Rice game though instead of sleep walking for 2 quarters, TEXAS sleepwalked for 3 quarters on offense vs the Cowboys. Then Xaiver Worthy said. . .ENOUGH. . .and he took a WR screen 44 yards to the house. Simple quick pass where X used his toughness quickness and speed to break an arm tackle, juke the safety covering over the top and take that 0 yard pass and add 44 yards of YAC (yards after catch 4th quarter was owned by TEXAS as they pulled away for the win. And credit Sark with the play design. X was wide right with an overload to the left leaving Wyoming with only 2 defenders on that side of the field. For all the grousing and grumbling, let’s talk about what went really well for the Horns. To kick off the walk on the positive side, we have to start with Coach PK and his defense. Don’t look now but TEXAS seems to have built a championship D. We’d hate to jinx things but through 3 games, TEXAS D has been suffocating. Yes, Wyoming gashed them on a 60 yard run on their 1st drive to take a 7-0 lead and connected with a FG on their 1st drive of the 2nd half. Other than that, nothing. After the opening drive TD, TEXAS forced 5 straight punts to close out the 1st half. You can win a great many games behind a D like this. We have long been fans of Sark but also critics. He’s a 1st rate recruiter, a great schemer of the plays but he hasn’t always been great on game day. TEXAS is 3-0 and in all 3 games, have clearly won the 2nd half of games. This is an area where Sark has dramatically improved in our eyes from his prior 2 years. We liked the play calling, which hasn’t always been the case, there was clearly a lack of execution in the game early. And guess what, that happens. There was no wavering from the plan on the part of the team or the staff. And like good teams do on bad nights, we closed out the game and won the 2nd half. Team win and this is the kind of win teams can build upon. Two offensive tweaks worth mentioning. Byron Murphy in as an HBack to block on the goal line, slips out into the flat for a touchdown to the big man. Love this. And Savion Red on 4th down as the wildcat QB not once but twice. Picked it up both times. Something else for teams to worry about. Did we mention Coach PK and his defensive charges? So far this is our biggest take away from our young season. TEXAS has a defense that the team can lean on to win games/keep us in games. And it starts upfront with the pass rush. Pass rush leads to jumping routes and for the 2nd week in a row, Jerrin Thompson with a 4th quarter interception, this time taking it to the house, to put a nail in the coffin to seal the win. Offensive player of the game Johnathan Brooks Announced his presence with authority. 21 carries, 164 yards including a 61 yard run to set up TEXAS’ last offensive Touchdown in the game. Take that run out, he still averaged 5 yards per carry. Defensive player of the game Jahdea Barron 6 solo tackles including 2 on 3rd down that stopped WRs short of the chains and 9 total tackles. Playing his way into the Thorpe award mix Special teams player of the game Ryan Sanborn in a defensive struggle, field position is key and he made sure TEXAS won the field position battle. 48 yard average on 4 punts, 2 over 50 yards and the biggest, pinning Wyoming inside their 5. He might be TEXAS’ most valuable transfer of the off season. Stats that Matter · 30 TEXAS has not been 3-0 to open a season since 2012 · 0-5 TEXAS on 3rd down in the 1st half. Not good · 4-12 TEXAS on 3rd down overall · 1 TEXAS lost it’s 1st offensive turnover of the season on a J Blue fumble in the 4th · 6 straight games where TEXAS recorded an interception · 5 Punts force by the TEXAS D in a row in the 1st half after Wyoming’s 1st drive On Deck TEXAS opens BigXII play on the road at Baylor. Baylor is not a great team this year though they feature 2 good RBs. Be ready for it every week, every team in the conference knows this is their last shot at TEXAS for some time and the Horns will see teams get up for us as their biggest game of the year. Embrace the hate. The goal is still to win the conference, leaving the BigXII in our rear-view mirror with a big caca sandwich. The best way to assure a ticket to Dallas in December is to win all the games in front of them. We’d welcome a fast start by the Horns. Fighting Mack Brown’s Behind 2 Drake Maye interceptions, a pesky Minnesota pushed UNC for 3 quarters before the Tarheels finally put them away. Maye still threw for 400+ and 2 TDs. Around College Football TEXAS wasn’t the only team to start slow this weekend, in fact it seemed to be the story of the weekend. #1 Georgia had to come from behind vs the Gamecocks #3 Florida State hung on late to defeat Boston College #11 Bama was 3-3 at half in a monsoon before a 17-3 win. WE BROKE THEM Florida knocked off #11 Tenn #15 Kansas State fell to Mizzu Okahoma State was run by South Alabama for the ugly loss of the week ISU lost to a good MAC program in Ohio 10-7 before their coach went after a fan post game. Wonder how much he regrets turning down Detroit and NFL millions now? Washington turned in a dominating performance on the road vs Michigan State (a team TEXAS has never played). Our dark horse pick to secure a playoff spot opposite (dare we say it) TEXAS. And in more blasphemy, they may have the best corps of WRs in the nation. We’ll start ranking the BIgXII after the 1st week of conference play. Game highlights Jimmy Buffet Tribute8 points -

Spot was really bad. I actually thought it was closer to the 11 or 12 yard line. I think the deal is that where the ball is spotted is not reviewable unless it for a first down or something like that. Not sure. Equally bad though was the LHN announcing crew had no clue whatsoever what was going on. Really glad we don't have to watch any more football games on the LHN. View from the Cheap Seats-Roll Tide like they’re toilet paper Signature win of the Sark Era HOW SWEET IT IS Great Googly Moogly. Sark records the landmark win of his short time so far at TEXAS. Frankly, it might be his landmark win as a Head Coach. Payback for last year. This is not the same TEXAS team as last year either. Only sorry Bill Little could not hang on a few more weeks to see it. And let’s start with the biggest coaching job of the night. As good as Sark and the offense was, credit Coach Pete Kwiatkawski and his charges with their biggest effort which included 2 big Interceptions, each leading to points to go with 5 sacks. More importantly, they largely shut down the Bama rushing attack and forced Milroe to beat us with his arm. While he did hit some huge passes, he was not consistent enough with said passes and the Horns largely kept his rushing contained. Last year the offense could not sustain 2nd half drives nor could the D stop opponents. In their biggest test of the year, both sides of the ball acquitted themselves well. There was no panic from the Horns, unlike their opponents who recorded 10 penalties, many unforced errors. From early in the game, Bama seemed to be pressing and TEXAS played like they were the higher ranked team. Even when Bama took a small lead in the 4th, the Horns took care of business, marched downfield and countered with a touchdown. In fact in the 4th quarter, TEXAS would score 21 points to put the game out of reach. And as we will mention below, TEXAS left an easy 11 points on the field. Just the kind of nagging concern that would sap TEXAS’ will power in years prior. Not this year. Even when Bama took a late lead, TEXAS just kept coming. This team believes in themselves and in their coaches. We at the Cheap Seats love Sark but we are also one of his loudest critics when it comes to 2nd half schemes, adjustments and play calling. What was so impressive in the heart of the deep south is how Sark called an All Gas No Brakes offense for 4 quarters. He outcoached his mentor while he and his staff did an outstanding job. One thing we found odd, Rice gave the TEXAS OL fits with their stunts last week. Bama lined up and never seemed to stunt. Fine with us, the only grass stains Quinn recorded were when he slid on runs. He was not sacked and rarely pressured. TEXAS went into Tuscaloosa with question marks. They would leave as clearly the superior team on both sides of the ball. TEXAS was superior over the course of 4 quarters, again on both sides of the ball. TEXAS did have a couple coverage busts where Bama/Milroe beat them over the top with passes but all in, a great scheme and game plan on both sides of the ball. Offensive Player of the Week Quinn Ewers is the easy call, finishing with 349 yards on 24 of 38 passing and 3 TDs. Should have been 5 TDs but he had 2 easy TD passes dropped. Again, he was never phased, keep his cool and just kept making plays. The ice water in Ewers veins play came half way through the 3rd when a Bama punt pinned TEXAS at their 6. Ewers hits Adonia Mitchell with a 32 yard pass down the sideline to get the Horns our of a deep hole. One of three deep shots he completed on the night. Oh and can we STFU on the kid not completing the deep balls? Ja’Tavion Sanders needs some love here. Finished as Ewers top pass catcher on the night while flashing his athletic ability. His highlight play was turning a short pass into a 50 yard run down to the Bama 7 leading to a TEXAS TD on the next play. This TD came on the heels of Bama taking a 3 point lead in the game. Bama would never retake the lead. Defensive Player of the Week Anthony Hill. The true freshman showed why he has received so much attention and hype this offseason. He is FAST and relentless. He would record 2 of the sacks on Jalen MIlroe, who is not an easy QB to sack as he flew around the field. Stats that Matter · 21 Bama’s home game win streak. BUSTED · 1st Saban’s 1st loss by double digits at home · 5-0 TEXAS recorded 5 sacks to none against · 2-0 TEXAS recorded 2 INTs to Zero turnovers for Bama · 7-18 TEXAS on 3rd down. · 2-11 In 11 drives, TEXAS would only punt twice, impressive · 2-4 TEXAS Red zone TDs vs chances. 4-4, 2 FGs overall · 11 Points TEXAS left on the field with 2 dropped TD passes and 1 missed FG from the 24. · 3-6 Ewers on “bombs away” deep shots (20 yards+ in the air). 2 TDs, one 32 yard completion and a Pass Interference call. So 4 plus plays · 3/2 Mr 1st Down Jordan Whittington with 3 catches 2 for 1st downs · 8-2-1 TEXAS all time record vs Bama Where the Horns go from here Sark has faced several coaching challenges since he arrived. Now he has a new one. He/TEXAS has largely always been the underdog. Now he is the leader of the pack with an even bigger target on his back. 1st time since 2009 TEXAS was picked to win the BigXII and now they have pulled off the biggest win of the new season. Can Sark keep his young charges from “eating the cheese” at the Tuna would say (reading their press clippings)? And make no mistake, the playoff talk will only get louder as TEXAS moves from a dark horse playoff team to favorite status. Basically, 1 loss to give, win the BigXII and TEXAS should secure one of the coveted playoff tickets. But there are still 10 games to play. Look for TEXAS to climb into the #6-#8 area of the polls this week as they prep for a home date against Wyoming. Fighting Mack Browns/UTSA Déjà vu all over again. Just like last year, Mack and the Tarheels needed multiple overtimes to knock off pesky Appalachian State. Down south, Jeff Traylor and the Roadrunners beat Texas State. Around College Football Now a perfect weekend is TEXAS winning with OU and ACES both losing. Well we got one. Aggies went down to South Beach only to get whipped. Colorado remains the darling of the new season as they beat rather soundly their old Big8/BigXII rival Nebraska. Doesn’t look good for Matt Rhule. Baylor pulled defeat from the jaws of victory as they let ranked Utah come back and beat them behind former TEXAS QB turned RB JQJ. Utah really misses another former TEXAS QB in Cam Rising still out with a knee injury. Oregon found out that Lubbock is a weird place to play and they struggled to put away Coach High School and the Red Raiders. In the only other meeting of ranked teams, Ole Miss overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Tulane. It was a quiet week in College football. . ..well for anyone but fans of Burnt Orange in Tuscaloosa.
