The FSU & Clemson to the Big XII rumor

True or not, I am intoxicated by this rumor because: A.) I would like to see the Big XII go to 12 and have a conf title game again & B.) It would make the aggie fans look even more ridiculous that said the Big XII was toast and no decent programs would ever want to join.

@GSwaim on twitter is a radio guy who claims to have league sources telling him that the Big XII is talking to FSU and Clemson so he is worth a follow. Also, for the sake of posterity, here is the link which I think gave birth to the rumor (from a WVU blogger):

I agree we need to get the no. of teams up to 12 in the conference however Clemson is not appealing to me. The 'Noles would be welcomed with open arms but I would rather see an old Southwest Conference member like UH get in before Clemson.

Conference realignment is all about $ and the money comes from eyeballs watching TVs. UofH has a small fanbase in a region the Big XII already owns. Clemson has a huge fanbase throughout the Carolinas and into Florida and Atlanta. Also, Clemson and FSU are said to be pissed at the "basketball first" orientation of the ACC and are looking to get out.

The guys at eerinsider.com are good with WVU info so I would think they are for the most part on track with the "rumor." If we could add Clemson and FSU the conference would have some serious breadth in terms of geography. The ACC is basically a bunch of garbage teams other than a few but I would take Boston College to the Big XII also. I have heard Maryland mentioned as a candidate too.

The 'Noles cover all of Clemson's fanbase and beyond I would think. Just don't think we want those two ACC teams. Louisville would be better than Clemson.

Maryland and GaTech are rumored to have a hard-on for the Big10 if they were to ever leave the ACC. Still, the TV markets they would deliver would be insane. If we were to become the Big 16 by adding FSU, Miami, GaTech, Clemson, and Maryland I would be surprised if ND didn't want to come on board then. ND could have its own tier 3 network and would have mega-recruiting-exposure in Texas, Florida and the Atlanta area. If no ND, add VaTech or Boston College.

Landing Notre Dame in the Big XII would be a "BOOM" heard around the country. BYU was close to joining last year but I believe the West Coast additions are not ideal for a variety of reasons. Eastern time zone teams would be our best bet for travel and game start purposes.

Regarding the article at EERinsider - I agree that Texas is committed to the Big XII which means in a Cartesian sorta way that the Big XII "is." So goes Texas, so goes the nation.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just saw a tweet from Chuck Carlton that didn't sound like this is a real possibility.

DeLoss Dodds on Big 12 expansion rumors: "I don't think the Florida State-Clemson thing has any basis at all."

Things are heating up. Florida State is still a very viable contender to end up in the Big 12. Miami is in the mix now as well, at least in rumor. I think we will have new conference members within a few weeks. Florida State and Miami would be awesome.

IT ain't happening guys. FSU is using the press as bargaining power within the ACC. Bring on Notre Dame and BYU. Chief Osceola can stay his happy self in Tallahassee.

I couldn't disagree with you more.

The ACC TV deals are already signed. They can't get any more $ to give to fsu.

The 'Noles will be Big XII members in my opinion. The ACC Spring Meetings started yesterday and both head coach Jimbo Fisher and Board of Trustees Chair Andy Haggard made reference to a move.

Fisher:

"There have been no official talks, but I think you always have to look out there to see what's best for Florida State," Fisher said. "If that (jumping to the Big 12) is what's best for Florida State, then that's what we need to do."

Aggies everywhere are chiming in on Florida State's potential Big XII move. They have to feel like shit knowing they might be replaced by a better team in FSU.

I will second the aggy sentiments. Talked to two ag buds today and they are both poo-poo-ing the FSU move. The excuse - "FSU has sucked for a while." They are overrated they say.

2 national championships and 12 ACC titles... This man says hello too:

Here is my personal opinion - coming from a combination of sources and common sense.

Our eerinsider.com site originally broke the FSU?Clemson story back in January. Even then we had sources giving indication both parties were interested. I would pay no attention, either in favor or against, to comments made from "higher ups" regarding discussions.

I keep reverting back to Missouri/Texas A&M saying they weren't interested in the SEC ....

And Texas was all but headed to the PAC-Whatever last year and they ended up staying put. There is a great article on the eerinsider.com site about how these conference deals are done in the middle of the night and behind closed doors (I think Honus "The Dude" wrote it). It is fun speculating though.
