The point on a brisket is typically the fattiest cut. Pitmasters often trim the point and select edges off a whole brisket and return them to the smoker.

Are burnt ends tough, chewy worthless cuts of meat, or are they a heavenly bites of smoky goodness? I suppose it depends on who you ask...

Rather than discard trimmings and fat, we chose to savor all the information that flows through the site. So, sit down and help yourself to some burnt ends.

***DO NOT FORWARD***

A 2016 QB, Dwayne Haskins, has told the coaches that he intends to visit this Fall. Haskins is rated as a 4* prospect and is one of Maryland’s Top 3 players.

Most have Haskins locked in at Ohio State, but he told a source close to the team that he’s intrigued by UT’s depth chart at quarterback.

File this one away as a longshot, but there’s still a ton of time before Haskins will sign anything. If the Texas coaches get him to Austin, consider that a significant first step in the right direction.

It’s no secret that Texas needs some game breakers on offense. There are three well-known, in-state receivers that the Horns are telling that they have a chance to jump straight into the mix and help immediately – Ryan Newsome, DeMarkus Lodge, and Reggie Hemphill (2016).

  • Even though most analysts have him as a heavy Texas lean, the SEC is turning up the heat on wide receiver Ryan Newsome. The Vols were at Aledo HS last week and Ole Miss pulled Newsome and Lodge both in for an official visit over the weekend.

Newsome has already been to multiple Texas games and is planning on being in Austin for the Baylor game this weekend. It’s not time to panic according to a solid source connected to Newsome’s recruitment, but anytime the SEC is sniffin’ around the hen house…

  • Since DeMarkus Lodge’s decommitment from A&M, the list of schools that have been by Cedar Hill HS is a veritable Who’s Who of college football powers. Not only did Ole Miss pull him in for a visit with Newsome, but LSU is showing lots of love too. Again, the SEC is sneaking around.

What we’re told is that Lodge is liking OU at the moment. He’s got an eye on the DGB case because that may hold the key to early playing time for him. Obviously Baylor is an attraction with the way they spread the ball to so many receivers, but the same questions that Lodge had about A&M apply to the Bears.

As for Texas, right now the Horns are on the outside looking in. A second hand source told us that, although the depth chart is attractive, that Lodge needs to see more from the Texas offense before considering them as a legitimate option. (Note: We’ve never gotten info from this guy before, so we can’t attest to how solid it is or isn’t.)

  • Don’t sleep on Reggie Hemphill – he may be a 2016 recruit, but a Texas team source says he’s “wowed” every time he sees more film. Hemphill is part of the Manvel posse, so there are going to be lots of twists and turns in this recruitment.

Hemphill’s recruitment is shaping up to be a Texas/Baylor/A&M battle. 2 of those teams are playing in Austin this weekend, so keep an eye on wideout play and remember that recruits are watching too.

We got some really solid scoop from a family member of Kendall Sheffield. For those of you that don’t follow recruiting closely, Sheffield is a 4-star cornerback from Missouri City, TX and is widely considered one of the five best players in-state for the class of 2015.

Sheffield’s family member told us that Texas and Strong have made a late push recently at Kendall and are trying to “hang in there” but he unless something drastic changes he will be an Aggie or play for Nick Saban. In fact, the way it was described to us was that Sheffield has narrowed it down to Alabama and Texas A&M.

There are loads of talented DB’s in-state in 2016, so long term this isn’t a loss to lose sleep over. But this is a defensive recruit in the current class…just the type of kid that the coaches need to help elevate their profile this Fall.

*****

Cam Townsend is another name that’s surfaced as having plans to be at the Baylor vs Texas game. Townsend plays linebacker at Ridge Point in Missouri City and is rated as a 4* prospect that is solidly in the Top 50 prospects in Texas.

Townsend has been a heavy lean to Texas for months, so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him leave Austin as a commitment. We checked in with a plugged in guy down in Houston and asked whether he thought a commitment was likely. The response: “I don’t believe in sure things – especially in recruiting, but all the signs point to Townsend leaving Austin as a Horn.”

Deandre McNeal (Mesquite Poteet) has scheduled three visits for Oklahoma State, UCLA, and Miami. As we told you in Burnt Ends a few weeks ago, McNeal is keyed on playing offense (WR) in college and it looks like his visit list is limited to schools that are talking to him about that side of the ball.

The Horns are in a small group competing for those final two visits, but so is Alabama…and Nick Saban was one of the first coaches that talked to McNeal about playing offense. In fact, Saban went as far as saying that McNeal had a scholarship offer on offense or defense, and told him that he could decide.

One of the names that you see analysts frequently projecting as the “next kid that will commit to Texas” is Tyler Moore. He’s already been to multiple Texas games and is making another trip to

Austin for the game against Baylor this weekend.

As we reported, Joe Wickline was at Moore’s school last week to review his transcript and watch his game in person. Knowing that, we caught up with someone very connected in Moore’s

recruitment and asked if a commitment might finally be close…

“Wickline and Tyler spoke again recently and Moore told him he’d be in Austin for the game. Texas is his top school without a doubt.”

We had an interesting conversation with a parent of a high profile 2015 recruit. From what we were told, it sounds as though Kevin Sumlin is doing some pretty heavy negative recruiting on the Longhorns.

In this conversation, were were told that Sumlin is specifically calling into question Charlie Strong’s attitude toward his own players. Evidently Sumlin is mentioning things like “Texas doesn’t care about kids”, and even going so far as saying things like Strong isn’t meeting face-to-face with the players he has kicked off and instead sends them text messages.

Whether Sumlin is recruiting aggressively or if he’s worried about Texas being seen as the anti-A&M – either way it doesn’t much matter. According to this source, Sumlin has told multiple recruits similar stories.

Rick Barnes is hoping his hot recruiting hand can extend out to Georgia and into 2016…Kobi Simmons the top player in Georgia (Alpharetta – St. Francis HS) was offered last week. Simmons is a true point guard and is considered to be a Top 20 national player.

Even though Simmons is thought to be a KU/UK battle, his scholarship offer is an interesting look into Barnes’ recruiting strategy. With the recent commitment of SG Eric Davis and a possible likely commitment from combo guard Kerwin Roach, the fact that Barnes is sticking at guard with the offer to Simmons might be a way-too-early clue towards his expected needs.

The Michigan Wolverines and Brady Hoke are a mess. Not only are they not winning, now Hoke’s handling of an injury in Saturday’s loss to Minnesota has his seat even hotter.

The situation is tumultuous enough that current Wolverine tight end commitment Chris Clark has already publicly said that he’ll visit UT if Hoke is fired.

Clark is one of the top three players in Connecticut and a 4* prospect. At 6’6”, 247, Clark is regarded as one of the Top 5 tight ends nationally. Since it’s an obvious position of need for the Longhorns and the media circus around Hoke isn’t going away soon, this is a side show to keep an eye on.

Last, but not least, we caught up with current commitment Charles Omenihu (Rowlett HS). Last week, Omenihu caused a commotion when he tweeted about the impression a rival school was making in recruiting. The tweet caused quite a firestorm and Omenihu ended up deleting it and was quoted by other sites as saying he’s still committed.

We caught up with Omenihu to follow up on the turmoil and asked him where his commitment stands.

“It’s pretty good. What I like is just the coaching staff and schemes.”

That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement, so we pushed for more information. Omenihu said he remains firmly committed and intends to play for Coach Rumph and the Horns.

now see, this is ultimately part of the god damn reason that i was so very adamant regarding bellmont / SID vs charlie strong, taking the roger goodell NFL meeting to the PR MAX!  welcome to the great state of texas charlie strong!  kevin sumlin, has hereby coached in the fourth largest city in america... HOUSTON, TEXAS!  this man is hereby highly abreast of texas.  he knows the in's, the outs, the ups, the downs... and the in-betweens, as per our great state.  he has no problem instigating vs manipulating to get what he wants.

there is simply nothing wrong with playing the quiet game.  there is nothing wrong with taking the high road, complete with all the necessary aesthetics available in tow.  and  there is certainly nothing wrong with wanting to represent the UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS with an ounce of class.  however, charlie strong began his tenure at TEXAS, by stressing to everyone, that he wanted to place the "T" back in TEXAS... well, sorry charlie, for all i am currently seeing is an X.  i need to see the other four accompanying letters.  you need to get tough charlie strong!  trust me, these outside recruits that are hereby hanging upon threads, are begging you to get tough!  you should have grabbed hold of roger goodell, and took every photo op available.  you should have allowed for roger goodell to make you the coaching envy of the great state.  should you not begin to fight back charlie... the kevin sumlins, bob stoops, art briles, mike gundys, and so forth.... are going to make you the biggest fool known to coaching mankind!  BoxingGlovesRed_rt.gif

EDITED. DO NOT BASH A RECRUIT. - Admin.

i have become damn sick and disgusted as per the silly season gridiron wannabe diva's.  TEXAS, has now had to endure the likes of four plus season's of paper mache, bobblehead players.  enough, is indeed enough!  stay with your clown show at michigan  Michigan-Wolverines-Logo-Small.jpg

sumlin news no surprise, or really even a big deal imo. all's fair in love and recruiting. it's up to CS and staff to get the story out there.

the Michigan deal defines clown-show. Have y'all heard the ABC announcer going nuts when the kid was going back in? apparently everybody could tell he was messed up...but the UM staff. then the UM AD issues a 1am press release on the subject.  texas may not be clicking on all cylinders right now, but at least we aren't michigan. so there's that.

Negative recruiting is a signal of fear and a response to a recruit saying they like Texas.

A good recruiter promotes his own school and doesn't even mention an opposing school.  If an opposing school should be brought up, he simply says "They are a fine school, but let me tell you about what Texas has to offer".
