Assessment of Dismissals/2 deep

Recommended Posts

Agree or disagree?

Looking at WR. The three starters are probably Shipley, Daje and Marcus Johnson. The backups will be Warrick, Foreman, John Harris, and Jake Oliver. Saunders was probably a starter at WR, but Meander was a backup. Sucks losing Saunders but replacing him with Daje isn't a horrible thing. Hurts our depth a little. Based on reports Warrick has been one of the better receivers in practice so don't be surprised if he's in a starting role.

Looking at RB. Gray, Bergeron, and Brown were ahead of Overstreet. Daje will probably get some touches in the backfield based on the reports from spring practices. So in Overstreet we lost a 4th/5th string RB. Talented player but not all that worked up about that loss.

Looking at safety. Starters were going to be Thompson and Turner. Backups were probably going to be Colbert and Collins/Vaccaro. Based on spring practice reports though it sounds like walk-on Dakota Haines has actually been one of the better players at safety.

IMO the only loss that really hurts is Collins just because of depth at safety. I don't think Collins was going to be a starter but still depth at that position would have been nice.

Don't forget that we've got stud-bubba freshman Edwin Freeman that may be able to step in right away for us.  http://www.texassports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5420&path=football

Not sure why I always spell it as Saunders instead of Sanders.

I could see Freeman potentially seeing time at safety. Really all Texas needs at that position is somebody that can stay in position. Texas doesn't need a playmaker just someone that's intelligent enough to be in the right position. That's why I think there's a real possibility that walk-on Dakota Haines could start at safety. The reason Haines got so much time in the spring game is because he's intelligent and put himself in the right position. IMO the top 3 safeties even before the Collins dismissal were Thompson, Turner and Haines (based on reports of who Strong liked). Everyone else was vying for the 4th safety spot on the two deep out of Colbert, Collins, Freeman and Vaccaro. The d-line is going to get pressure on QBs, our safeties just need to be intelligent and be in the right position. I prefer we redshirt Freeman this year though. I personally think out of Colbert, Vaccaro, Thompson, Haines, and Turner we will be fine. I don't think we will have anything special at safety, but at least players that aren't getting burned.

gents, as i have stated upon another thread, two of the four banned players were supposed to be undergoing a special workout program as per coach pat moorer.  as i recall, coach strong indicated that two of the four would indeed return in time for fall practice.  that is, unless otherwise stated.

Those players were banned from Moncrief, not the team. It sounds like these two players have been completely kicked off the team. I think these two players were probably 2 of the players banned from Moncrief and didn't get their act together so they were kicked off the team.

The other thing I've noticed is we still have entirely too many receivers on this roster. 16 receivers even after losing Meander/Sanders is too many with the offense we will be running. I watched some Louisville film a couple days ago and Strong/Watson run just as many 2 receiver sets as they do 3 receiver sets. If we are going to be splitting only two wide for a good portion of the game we do not need 16 WR on the roster. Burt and Newsome is all we really need in this recruiting cycle even after the recent dismissals.

Let's be real regarding the impact of the 2 suspended and 4 dismissed players. There will be no negative impact performance wise.

I would go further than that and call it an actual positive

Addition by subtraction

(although I must admit I did like Joe)

i think that we are mainly concerned as per recruitment.  prospective recruits, are hereby very young vs impressionable.  you may never really know just how such haphazard events may affect them and their decisions.

Charlie Strong went 23-3 over his last two seasons AND produced a perfect APR. That is damned impressive on the field and off. I'm not expecting many people to ask a lot of questions or question his methods. At least not yet.

There is a certain group of parents of recruits who will find this extremely positive.

Not all of them, but the serious ones.

Which will be enough for us.
