A FEW THOUGHTS AS SUMMER APPROACHES

The spring game is just over a week away and the dog days of summer will be upon us soon and I have to admit I have never more excited for a football season to start. Now Don’t get me wrong I don’t expect us to be world beaters from the start but I do anticipate seeing a much more physical team and one that plays with passion. With that said here are a few thoughts as we sit and wait for it all to begin.

1. I think we all know now what kind of coach we got in Charlie Strong. He demands 100% commitment from his players not only on the football field but also in life.

2. Charlie Strong works at his pace and does it his way. This approach in my opinion has upset many message board experts especially in regard to the way Strong has made offers to recruits. Many feel he has offered some recruits way too slow and question why some have not received offers at all.

3.I have to admit I am concerned about what we will get with Watson as a play caller. (I will be watching this closely the first few games)

4. The QB position: What a mess this position has been the past 4 yrs. I know injuries are part of the game but never should a program like Texas not have a backup QB who is capable of completing a 30 yd out pattern. By all accounts David Ash is having a good spring and I expect him to be the game one starter however if he goes down again it might be a bit much to expect Jerrod Heard to come in a lead this team as a true freshmen.

5. RECRUITING RECRUITING RECRUITING : I love all the offers we have made especially to all of the out of state prospects however we have yet to see that one big splash commit happen. Now don’t get me wrong I think Strong & his staff have done a good job of selling what the new UT program is all about but I think the recruits are now in it’s “time to show me modeâ€.  The upcoming season is not only big for Coach Strong but it very well could define our recruiting classes for years to come. We need to win and win now.

as long as "watson" is an upgrade over our last carnival barker "major applewhite" i am all for it!

no way no how!   am i about to just give up upon the "superlatives" that are indeed "tyrone swoopes".  mbhornsfan, you my great pal, are not the only one that is "excited" as per this forthcoming gridiron season.  for, i simply cannot wait upon just what decision (s) that coach strong has in store for us regarding "tyrone swoopes".  i have a sense that "swoopes" shall indeed be prepared, for when his name is called upon.

I think on the surface most will be disappointed that the play calling will be "closer to the vest" with an eye to moving the chains and sustaining drives with big shots only mixed in to keep the D off balance. . .

Even at UL with a Heisman level QB, Charlie Strong likes ball control and he has just the RBs to pull it off this year .. .

Frankly I'm not that concerned with Watson . . . but this time a year ago I thought Major was going to light the world on fire. . . .BYU cured that fantasy ..

PS, not many starters in D 1 football who can complete a 30 yard out.. . that's a whale of a throw. . .

i too had hopes for major, but he isn't the coordinator i remember most from the byu game.

Do this, play good defense, and you'll win most of the games. They might be of the 21-17 variety, but a win is a win is a win.

As much as I love to see exciting down the field offense fast scoring offense, I would love to see them pound it down the other teams throats time after time and put points on the board and then let a rested defense do it's thing. Maybe I'm just a little old school in that regards.

3. Not convinced Watson will be the "play caller." I'm sure he will call some plays. So, will Wickline and even Koenning.

4. 30 yr. out pattern is a tough throw. Most out patterns in college are 10-20 yds.

We need a play where, if we get off-schedule, we can pick up a 3 and 8. That's killed us the last couple of years.

Yes,

Am basing this on the assumption that Joe B realizes he has one year left and with J Gray questionable at least early (he might be ready by Oct but I'm thinking he shirts). . . .he seizes the opportunity to show the NFL he's a valid option.

But you forget Donald Catalon and the "other" Forman brother. . .both quality HS RBs. . . and RB is a position that transitions well from one level to the next.

Yes, Manny got the notice as the worst CO in the BYU game but lost in that was a very odd offensive game plan. . .
