badboy783
There's not a single "look at me" type coach. You have a staff full of knowledge concerning the spread offense and power spread offense. When these guys all sit down and start putting a plan together, you don't have to worry about inexperience being a factor in the game plan. I know everyone wants to freak out regarding the lack of a splash hire but if we are really being honest, Texas doesn't need a splash. It needs X's and O's, mental and physical development, and a group of guys who are more concerned about building student athletes than they are in building their own careers. Wickline was the splash hire of the staff for me. He's been the best coach on the OSU staff for a long time and helped a couple of good OC's land head coaching jobs. He's a king maker, not a king. And when you are talking about a program full off laziness and entitlement, you need king makers, and that IMO is what this entire staff is. Fire away shots at me if you want but this isn't a youth or geriatric movement... it's a football movement that Texas has desperately needed for a long time. DizzG
im interested to see how it turns out. This is nothing like we have been used too for 16 years. Its a whole new experience and Texas seems to have a honest to God football coach who will hit on all the areas people have been screaming needed fixed for years. time will tell how it works out on the field, but just cant believe we dont see good results from hard work, players in top shape to really push their max talent, huge increase in toughness and decrease in entitlement, and teams that are prepared to play each Sat to the max of their ability. I cant wait.

Who is the boss on offense or is it a committee. Why did Strong demote Watson and wait 10 days to hire a WR coach that he could have hired on day one. Why did Strong hire an unproven OC in Wickline after demoting Watson. What system will we run, who decides. Opposing recruiters are going to make it hard to,keep some of our 2013 commits. This was handled poorly and I am afraid we will pay for it. Hope I am wrong. It would have been helpful if we hired good recruiters to try and sell whatever it is that we are selling. But we kept Chambers who was our worst coach and recruiter and replaced the rest with average recruiters except for Wickline. It is the tip of the ice berg of a stream of consciousness I could get into My thinking is in harmony with the content and tone of what is said here. Well put. I also believe Strong has had a vision all along of something even more he can contribute to the game, if and when he got to a truly elite program. He's in position to define an image of college football. We're seeing a vision unfold. To be actualized (realized), and that will be the joy of it. Who is to say that in the not too distant future he will be the guy representing a coaching tree and coaching philosophy others quote and look up to

Um you have no ties to Texas, and Sumlin and Briles are all over you. What does this offensive staff have to offer you that tells you this is the best offense for you? I don't see it. Sirhornsalot
Wickline is the star of the offensive staff. I'm not getting why some seem disappointed that he'll have some real control of this offense. Wick is a very smart man, look at the offense he's been deeply involved with for a long time. He knows it inside out. Watson, IMO, is still an up and comer but has made some noise with LV. Having him at WR coach is on the plus side for that position, IMO. Wick on the OL, we got the best. Koenig is a position coach with OC experience. Another plus for that position hire. The only move here on O that I question was the non-move of Chambers. IMO, he was not the best we could do there. TE has been MIA at Texas. Now to defense, where there is no hire that I don't totally love. Love Vance Bedford as DC. His work speaks for itself and his best days are still in front of him. Chris Rumph's hiring might be the ace in the hole on the D side. Kids love this guy, recruits like a crazed dog, and churns out NFL'ers on a regular basis. Big hire. Brian Jean-Mary has an excellent reputation. I fully expect a huge improvement in our LB play under this guy's watch. Chris Vaughn is fully capable of stepping in and improving on what Akina built. This guy will be a DC one day. Thoughts?
CoachBobbyFinstock
Sorry I don't agree at all. At the end of the day, can these guys recruit the type of skill kids to come to Texas and sell their offense. Koennig nor Watson are spread guys. Wickline is a prolific Oline coach but hasnt been an OC or play caller in over 25 years. If he were able to do the things many are hoping why didnt Gundy just make him the guy? Its a legit question. This staff will be recruiting against some of the best spread offenses in the country. Baylor, Tech, Aggy, OSU and OU do it better then just about anyone in the country. Texas isn't in the ACC, SEC or Big 10. He hired guys that aren't familar with this type of fire power week in week out outside of Wickline. The uptempo spread offense is the king of Texas and it is perfected in this state by our great coaches and I am proud to be in the fraternity. I can promise you that these rival coaches are breathing a sigh of relief after this.

While I don't dispute your disagreement with Gundy, I don't think Gundy's moves dictate whether our moves are successful or not. He's a 40-something yr old man, but he's just a man. We can fill an entire blog with questions for why Gundy does what he does. What he did with Wickline and the OSU offense apparently worked. I don't think recruits will come to Texas to be coached by Koenig. But again, they didn't come to Texas to be coached by Chambers, either. If Strong can take a program like Louisville and have success, I'm pretty confident that when given the resources of UT he'll have success and Big 12 coaches know that very well, IMO. For a league that produces offenses that generally falter when met with a good defenses, I don't think there's much relief to be found in the Big 12 right now. What does this offensive staff have to offer you that tells you this is the best offense for you? I don't see it. Kind of hard to see when we haven't even been able to see a press conference where questions are asked at the very least. Kids flocked to play for Greg Davis and he's everyone's favorite whipping boy of the Mack Brown era. Turns out the old fart cranked out offenses that Texas hasn't seen since he left. While I get the desire to go out and hire a young spread offensive mind, I keep getting drawn back to the fact that most of their offenses bog down against physical defenses because they lack the ability to be able to run the ball. I won't be worried unless we come out in double TE's and 2 backs. The knowledge is there.. Wickline has worked with Gundy, Holgerson, Fedora, and Yurich. Koenning has put in many years, is loved by the HS coaches in the state, and has been under Mullen, an Urban diciple, setting school records at MSU, with MSU type talent. Watson, due in large part to TB, helped elevate Charlie to the level of being able to get a job like Texas. We don't know if he's coming in to his own as an offensive mind or if Louisville was an anomoly but I have my doubts on him. Robinson's track record speaks for itself, however USC rushed for 170+ a game this year and that hasn't been done since 2010. The only head scratcher for me is Chambers and I'm willing to give the rest the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise. Our defense is finally going to get right and IMO one of the most exciting things about Strong coming to Texas is that the "invisible freshman" phenomenon under Mack Brown is no more.
