beevomav
Greatness..Lot of meat on them bones. The Saban connection and big money guys in Austin is something I would have never thought of, but it makes sense on so many levels. Luck to the Longhorns. This may have been one of the worst kept secrets, but it does make me wonder.."why the search committee?" Why form a committee when you have your guy? will_hookem
If Saban is the guy, we are gonna pull quite the coo off, if we can get egos checked in that door, to fill coordinators and assistant coaches will all star candidates. Not saying it cant be done, and if anyone can do it, its us... Texas.

My best guess is some combination of PR, lowering the risk for the decision makers if it turns out to be a bad hire and/or keeping the decision making power away from Dodds (who would have tried to hire one of his buddies)

TheContractor
Luck/Saban would be a grand slam if it happens. There are twitter reports of Saban's best friend saying he will not leave Bama and other reports of Saban's wife already being in Austin to "look for homes." Does the information leaking out this early hurt or help the chances Saban would come to Texas? Not make a difference at all? Maybe this is a ploy to get Bama to give him more $ bc of the bad deals? Maybe Saban want out of Tuscoloosa? Is it true Luck interviewed for the Texas AD job at an Indiana airport to avoid being tracked to Austin? Does Luck and Saban have a real connection that would make them want to work together? If Saban were to say no, who would they look at next? I can't believe Briles would not be on the short list. Maybe after that offense puts up 60 on us they will notice(I love Texas but its a real possibility as I don't believe the team has turned any corner). I am glad to hear that even if Texas wins out, Mack will not be back but I have a hard time seeing Mack leave quietly. At the same time, u know from my view above, I don't think we will win out. Timeline for luck is anywhere from this week to Thanksgiving. Any idea on timeline to Mack to announce retirement or "stepping down" as ther is 0% chance of the word "fired" to ever be used? Anytime line for Saban if that we're to happen? I have hopes for Saban but just a long time from now till the end of the year. Thanks McPhaul, please continue with the updates! @TheContractor12 Edited October 23, 2013 by TheContractor
Fuddy
Is it true Luck interviewed for the Texas AD job at an Indiana airport to avoid being tracked to Austin? Does Luck and Saban have a real connection that would make them want to work together? They definitely know each other well, Saban was the DB coach at WVU while Luck was the QB there. As far as staying in contact with each other, people have said that but I have no idea whether that's true or not. Between possibly helping lure Saban to UT and being an advocate of realignment, I'm a fan of Luck being hired
Lord Vader
Luck is a solid, solid hire on multiple levels.
TheContractor
Luck is a solid, solid hire on multiple levels. Agreed, without Saban ties, Luck is at least B+ to A hire, maybe A+ but only time will tell.
HornNdriftwood
"The reason this is important is because the Texas BMD’s (Big Money Donors) are in a more favorable position to help Saban’s BMD’s subsidize his salary in outside business deals at the level that Alabama BMD’s are not capable of." The above dove-tails with what I've been thinking lately. Either Bama or Texas will be Saban's last gig. If he stays at Bama and wins another MNC he'll be a god in Alabama and never have to worry about where his next drink is coming from. But that's in Alabama, Big Fish in a Small Pond. If he comes to Texas and wins a MNC, then his retirement opportunities in Texas would be vastly superior, IMO.
TheContractor
im pretty sure after 3 titles and a statue he doesnt have to pay for a drink in the state now. Retiring in Bama vs Texas is a night and day difference. IF the Bama BMD dont help him get out of this deal/or into better options, they are idiots. Would paying him $4 million more per year help him get out of the $ problems? Its going be more than just $ that will bring Saban to Texas. HornNdriftwood
That was kind of my point. There are SO many more reasons Texas is more attractive as a retirement destination - financially, culturally, climatically, geographically (and every other damn way!). SanTexHorn
Luck is a solid, solid hire on multiple levels. When the talk of Dodds retiring first started, I had Jurich as 1A and Luck as 1B, either would be a great hire. Either will be a great hire. dragworm
If Steve Patterson comes to Texas I will light myself on fire. I would like to know why as well. Patterson has similar qualifications, and is maybe even better qualified that Luck to be the AD. What are his negatives?
