Tom Herman

Colorado Buff fan here.  Things have not gone well since leaving the Big XII, to say the least.

Tom Herman has become one of the front runners to be the next head coach.  His last game at Texas was a rout of the Buffs.  What is everyone's opinion of him?

I have heard he can be a jerk. Rumors that he burned recruiting bridges in Texas.  His politics rubbed some the wrong way in Texas?  (He is Conservative or Liberal?) Rumors he has some health concerns?

But he can coach, and is an offensive mind.

Should CU hire him?  Recently some of the CU football staff have started following him, which has started some speculation.

Thanks for any input.

BTW - Buffs tried to get Sark 3 years ago.  Saban gave him a raise to stay as OC.  I believe you got a good one.

Welcome to our board, Bosco.

The feelings toward Tom Herman here range from criminal to ugly. He's not well thought of.

However, if he's learned some things from that experience here, he CAN be a fine HC.

Yes, he can be a jerk. His primary problem was his arrogance, which hopefully is no longer an issue.

We have no idea what his politics were because I don't think I ever heard him speak on it. I also don't know anything about health concerns.

I think CU would be a great place for him to re-emerge and start over. You certainly can and have done worse with that hire. There was a reason Texas went after Tom Herman. He was successful. I think the same traits exist in him that made Texas go so hard after him. Its just a matter of eliminating some of the bad things that affected him, such as that arrogance. I would imagine it would be a few years before that would come into play again, if it did.

Herman was the media darling as the hot coach , must have, and of course he had been a grad assistant here under Mack Brown so most of us ( me included) bought in hook line and sinker because it seemed on the surface that Texas had finally landed the "prom queen"..

I think Tom Herman is kind of an odd bird. He doesn't read the room very well and is kind of socially inept. His public displays of mocking an opposing team on the field and shooting a double bird at a camera man on national signing day didn't help.

I think not insisting that players stay on the field to sing the Eyes Of Texas school song rubbed a lot of the people, including his boss the AD, the wrong way. Again, he doesn't read the room well. He had few on his side when it came down to keeping his job.

He wins more games than he loses (32-18 at Texas) and I think he won every bowl game he coached here, but he couldn't win the conference and had trouble with OU (1-3?), which cost him some much needed support. His "winning is hard" mantra after every loss got old after a while. Also he sometimes annoys recruits' families which doesn't help his cause and started costing the team toward the end of his career here.

I think he is overall a winning coach and could be good for a program that is really struggling.

As for recruiting, he missed on Ewers and Brockemeyer's. Both have turned out shitty, so there's that.

He didn't have big enough balls to fight politics at UT. They tell you who your players are going to be before you get the job.

He got stuck in the middle of the Eyes of Texas song controversy when BLM had the whole world on fire.

We were trying to hire Urban Meyer behind his back, and almost did until he told us he wasn't letting the Big Cigars call the shots and walked away. By then we had burned Tom's bridge with a poorly kept secret.

We screwed up running him off.

Welcome.

I have followed Texas football closely since the 1970s.  There were worse head coaches at Texas during that time, but CTH is the last one I’d like to have back here.  His antics were childish and embarrassing at times.  Moreover, he was extremely divisive.  He was divisive with the press, the players and the alumni.

I don’t know what politics has to do with coaching football…. And as mentioned he didn’t take political stances…. But did offer woke lectures in the form of open letters.

Herman improved the program over his predecessor…. and I agree there may be some gold there to mine - if he learned some lessons.  He recruited amazing well - as a “non-player’s coach.”  Team generally played hard and hit hard… while making incredibly stupid mistakes.

It’s a mixed bag - what he did at UH was really impressive and we outbid LSU for his services.   My answer to your question is a hesitant “no,” all things considered.   But CTH seems to have a pretty high ceiling.  That’s my honest take.

I didnt want to bring up the Eyes of Texas subject, because it was/is a hot button topic, but in all fairness to TH he got thrust into s situation that was lose/lose. IMO he want to be the hip cool coach  and the BMD and the old time Longhorn faithful wanted no part of the "woke" mentality that seemed to be sweeping the nation, and made UT a less that desirable place for recruits to come play

In a nutshell, if Tom Herman can get out of his own way, he would/will be a really, really good head coach.

I mean, getting out of his own way is generally his biggest problem and he still has compiled a 54-22 record as a head coach in 6 seasons and has never had a losing season.

I would take him right now if I knew he has his shit together.

Herman made the situation unnecessarily difficult for himself.  When we try to play a middle ground and appease, then we lose respect from everyone.

Thanks for all the input.  Not making feel confident about this possible hire.  I don't have confidence the Colorado AD will vet out some of these concerns

Perhaps, but you might have to take whoever is willing to come to Colorado for the money you're offering. I think Herman can make you a better team. If all your looking at is wins and losses, then he will be an improvement.

Off the top of my head I can only think of two people that believe they are ALWAYS the smartest person in the room.
They make ridiculous statements with  such conviction in hopes that people will “buy it”.

They can never admit they might have been mistaken even when every shred of evidence proves they are wrong.

They talk and talk and talk to simply hear themselves.

They alienate everyone who has the misfortune to cross their path and can single handily ruin any environment with their presence.

One of those people is Tom Herman and this other one makes him seem like a great guy.
