Texas Baseball right handed pitcher Ty Madden finished the season with a 7-5 record, a 2.45 ERA and 137 strikeouts as the Longhorns' ace.  On Sunday evening he was drafted with the 32nd pick by the Detroit Tigers, becoming the highest MLB draft pick from the Longhorns since 2011 (Taylor Jungman - Milwaukee Brewers #12 overall).

Madden was a force on the mound, holding opposing hitters to a .188 batting average.  He ended his career with Texas by pitching 13 innings in Omaha in the College World Series, striking out 18 and allowing four runs.  In his time wearing burnt orange, he went 14-6, pitched 181 innings and struck out 200 batters while totaling an ERA of 2.59.

I don't know really anything regarding the MLB draft but it was weird to me.  Ty was rated #12 and the 3rd best pitcher in the draft and he fell to #32.  There was also a kid rated #6 and he fell to #16.  There were a lot of high school pitchers taken which surprised me.  I just find it hard to believe that a 17 year old kid is better than a 21 year old.  Even if just from a body maturity aspect.  Oh well.  Interesting draft to say the least.  Congratulations Ty!!!

A couple things: 1. I've seen him ranked anywhere from 9th to 24th in rankings so there wasn't a consensus of where he should be ranked.

2. MLB draft isn't about all about talent, money and signability play big roles where players get picked. The Tigers took a HS pitcher at #3 who will get an under slot deal that will allow the Tigers to pay Madden closer to $500K over the $2.25 million slot value. Congrats Ty on becoming a millionaire over night! lol

3. Eric Longenhagen mentioned in his draft recap at Fangraphs that some teams had medical red flags causing him to fall a few picks. He didn't explain what those red flags were. I know Madden has dealt with blisters in the past and I remember Craig Way mentioning Madden pitching through some stuff during the season but don't know what it was. That could be another reason for the fall and may cause him to not get as much of a bonus.

Interesting...thanks for the insight.  Yeah, I have no clue how the money works and how their slotted.  But this helps a lot.  Thanks again!
