Bear19
Sitting at home here in Huntsville. Ice is covering the streets and we’re supposed to get five or 6 inches of snow on top of that. More snow on Wednesday. Not going to be leaving the house for quite some time. Headed toward 15° tonight and I think about 8° tomorrow night.I have spent the last two days covering every pipe faucet valve I can find. my best friend and two siblings live in the Dallas area. Another brother lives in Abilene. They’re gonna get it even worse. I’m extremely concerned about our electric grid with all the ice that’s going to form on the transmission and distribution lines. We have a natural gas generator so should be OK there. Of course as long as the gas pressure doesn’t drop too low. But thank God for natural gas. Thought this thread might help pass the time and generate some interest/camaraderie. UTfish
Coot
I went outside about 5 to cover a vent that goes under the house. I won't do that again. I almost fell on the ice and my fingers got numb in about 3 minutes. Seems like it got down below 10 once when I lived in Kerrville in the 80's but I haven't seen it this cold in these parts since then. City of Austin Utilities just sent out an email asking everybody to reduce electricity use where possible. I may have to move farther south. Sirhornsalot
This is probably the only time in all of our lives where we have a winter storm warning in all 254 counties. I'm 57 and have never seen that before. Here north of DFW Airport, we have about 4-5 inches of snow. There is no ice at all and we're fortunate for that. The temperature was so cold that we never had rain or sleet, it started as snow. Its the light, fluffy, powdery stuff you see on the slopes in Colorado. The stiff wind has kept it from collecting on power lines and tree limbs. Still, not a lot of people on the road right now and thats good. We're supposed to get down to 1 or 0 tonight and tomorrow night. Supposed to get 5-8 inches of snow on Tuesday night through Wednesday. My crews haven't worked since Wednesday of last week. UTfish
It's supposed to be around 7 degrees here at Toledo Bend. Will be at freezing and mostly below for 5 or 6 straight days. I drained all water pipes and filled containers with enough drinking water and wash water to last a couple of weeks or longer, if necessary. Can dip water from the lake for flushing. Plenty of fuel for the generator. All our power lines are above ground, so we lose power at the drop of a hat. Boats are under cover and tractor's in the garage. (Priorities) Haven't had to face cold like this since hunting in Idaho when it was 26 below. Different kind of cold there, though. Feels colder here. Warm wishes to you all, good luck and no broken pipes. Sirhornsalot and Bear19

Snow tonight and tomorrow and maybe Wednesday. My bet is we will be without power sometime tonight and our house is all electric. texbound
It was pretty chilly here this morning; It got down to 65. It warmed up to about 81 while I was playing golf. Might play golf again tomorrow In all seriousness, stay safe and warm everyone and don't get on the road unless you have to. Warm wishes to you all. sporty, UTfish and Sirhornsalot 2

Sirhornsalot
It got down to 0 here last night. My first floor heater gave up. It was 48 down there this morning. My fire had gone out in the fireplace. Also had a water pipe freeze in the downstairs bathroom. Got the heater working downstairs and also thawed the water pipe. All is well again. Forecasted low is 20 tonight, which is 20 degrees warmer than it was last night. 20 never looked so good. lol dillohorn and Bear19

We didn't lose power so we were lucky, too. Hope all the rest of our friends were so fortunate. Sirhornsalot and Bear19
Bear19
I am also very fortunate to have never lost power. My natural gas generator has sat silent. There is a prison unit right across the freeway and a fire station about a mile away. I assume I am on the same grid as one of them or both of them. I have had a flock of robins underneath my patio awning. When I go out there they will flitter away and then come right back. dillohorn and UTfish

Moderator joeywa Posted February 17, 2021 Moderator Report Share Posted February 17, 2021 We had about 2 feet of snow here in SW WA over the weekend. Cold as all get out. Ice storm on top of that on Sunday night. Today was upper 40s and it’s mostly melted away, at least on the roads. I say this because this was extremely abnormal for here. This was something like the second largest snowfall in this area on record. What y’all are experiencing in Texas is equally as odd. Hang in there and stay warm. Sirhornsalot
I have a couple of employees staying the night at my place this evening. Their apartments lost power and never got it back. There are millions in Texas without power. This is really shocking to me as we've always had the power here. Mother Nature's ice storms were the only thing that usually cut us off. But this is a supply thing. The State Senate is going to have hearings on how this happened and how to keep it from happening again. I know of a few coal plants that would have been handy had they not been shut down 7 -8 years ago. Bear19
