Texas opens season with 59-3 blowout win over UTEP

Recommended Posts

Following months of uncertainty, Saturday night marked the return of Texas football for the 2020 season. The Longhorns welcomed UTEP to Austin looking to build on an offseason where Tom Herman retooled his coaching staff and looked to build on a resounding bowl victory to end the 2019 season. Texas fans did not have to wait long to see the new look Longhorn offense. Sam Ehlinger opened the game by hitting Josh Moore on a 78 yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage, and the senior added 4 more touchdowns through the air in the first half to pace Texas in a 59-3 victory in the season opener.

It was a big night for the Texas offense, which finished the evening with 690 yards. Ehlinger led the way with 426 yards through the air and Keaontay Ingram led all running backs with 44 yards on 9 carries. Josh Moore was Ehlinger’s favorite target, finishing with 6 catches for 127 yards, but it was a team effort for the Longhorns receivers and tight ends. 7 different pass catchers found the endzone, including walk on Kai Money and graduate transfer Brenden Schooler.

The Longhorns revamped defense under Chris Ash forced three 3-and-outs in the first four UTEP possessions. The Miners 5th possession ended with Josh Thompson picking off Gavin Hardison. Hardison had a rough evening, finishing 12 for 27 for 141 yards and no touchdowns. The Miners lone points of the game came on field goal late in the first half, but the Longhorns responded with a quick 75-yard drive capped by Ehlinger’s final TD of the evening, a 6 yard pass to Money, allowing the Longhorns to take a 45-3 lead into halftime.

The second half featured many of the Longhorns backups and underclassmen. Casey Thompson tossed his first two touchdown passes of his career to Brennan Eagles and Marcus Washington. Freshman QB Hudson Card made his collegiate debut in the 4th quarter, rushing for 7 yards. Highly touted freshman RB Bijan Robinson saw steady action throughout the evening, finishing with 5 carries for 38 yards and 2 receptions for 9 yards.

The win gives Texas a 1-0 record heading into Big 12 play. The Longhorns will travel to Lubbock on September 26th to take on Texas Tech, who squeaked out a 35-33 victory over Houston Baptist to open the season.

Rewatching game. Not considering the opponent, I really like what I am seeing.

The receivers are doing a great job of catching the ball-it’s not passive, it’s aggressive & I like it.

I will be surprised if Whittington’s injury is more than a sprain.  He needs to be running in gooey clay, barefooted to strengthen those tendons and ligaments.  I don’t think he was able to get the heavy lower body conditioning other guys were follow the surgery, but I may be very wrong.

UTEP players, some of them, are acting like punks.  It ticked me off when Prince smashed (Moore or Black) head in the turf after the play-jackass.  What is he, a gangster?  Bad look for the school.

I take back everything negative that I ever said about Thompson.  He was playing out of position, why?

RJ still looks like a monster at running back.  Love that kid.  ROSHON’sBIGBRO, if you are out there in cyberspace, your brother is without a doubt one of my favorites.  He exhibits all of the traits of a winner:  character, determination, courage, perseverance, personality, and a positive attitude.

i think the number 0 means more than a jersey number.  I don’t know what & don’t want to speculate.

Ossai will get his against stronger teams. Right now, I am glad to see the defensive line cleaning it up.

How in the world did Thompson get his ear badly lacerated?  Sounds like his helmet doesn’t fit!  That’s a major issue.  New helmet time!

I just love our all grown up or almost grown up Bevo!  Proud, stately mascot.

i didn’t think anything about the players not gathering for the Eyes  The Eyes began playing quite a bit before it usually does.  What do some of you want them to do, run to the designated spot, after playing an entire game?  Sam didn’t even get there, but he was walking to the normal area, horns up, singing The Eyes.

Tackling looked good.  The rugby style or whatever, appears to work  Talent doesn’t hurt.

That’s it for now  I have hours & hours of work to do today.  Honestly, with the plan that TEA came up with, the amount of work required from teachers to make it work is unsustainable over the long term, in most teachers opinions

When they decide to do crap like this, they need to go out and physically do all of the work in a classroom for 2 weeks.  They wouldn’t make it through the first one.  The last I heard they were still working from home!  Really.  They can’t work around the same adults every day  BS!

Hook ‘em!  All the way, Horns!

Great message!

Sad to hear about BJ. That said, I remember all the talk of the 3 safeties from that class and so far, their production has bot equaled the hype.

Additionally, I realize the quality of opponent has something to do with it but as a DBs coach, it seemed we had more discipline and technique in that group last night than we have in a while. Also seemed like we have a really good amount of depth there too.
