The Texas Longhorns (10-2, 0-0) didn’t fare as well as they hoped over the weekend, losing two of three to SEC teams in the Shriners Hospital for Children College Classic in Houston.

FRIDAY

On Friday night the #11 LSU Tigers got the best of starting pitcher Bryce Elder and Texas, defeating the Longhorns 4-3 and giving the team their first loss of the season.  Elder pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up three earned runs and one unearned run, striking out 10 in the losing effort.  Texas managed just four hits on the night, all against Tigers starting pitcher Cole Henry, one of which was a home run by catcher DJ Petrinski. Texas held a 3-2 lead headed into the bottom of the 6th inning, but LSU’s Daniel Cabrera connected for a two-run homer off Elder to give the Tigers the lead which they would hold for the remainder of the game.  LSU closer Jaden Hill relieved Henry in the 7th and shut down Texas, striking out 6 of the 10 batters he faced.

SATURDAY

Zach Zubia’s four-hit day at the plate on Saturday helped propel the Longhorns to a 8-7 win over #6 Arkansas.  Texas scored six runs in the second inning, including a deep shot by Zubia into the left-center field stands, which extended the Longhorns’ lead to 8-0 over the Razorbacks.  Arkansas tried to mount a comeback in the 5th, scoring in every inning except the 8th and cutting the lead to 8-7 in the 9th inning. Andre Duplantier II struck out the final two Razorback batters to end the game in favor of Texas 8-7.  Starting pitcher Ty Madden won his third straight game to improve to 3-0 on the season.  Patrick Wicklander took the loss for Arkansas.  Texas amassed 10 hits in the game, and used Cole Quintanilla, Peter Hansen and Andre Duplantier II in relief on the mound.

SUNDAY

Sophmore right-handed pitcher Coy Cobb got the starting nod for the Longhorns in their Sunday matinee against the Missouri Tigers and pitched five innings before being relieved by Kolby Kubichek.  The Longhorns held a 4-3 lead at that point, but Kubichek surrendered four runs in the top 6th allowing Missouri to take an 8-4 lead.  Texas cut the deficit to 8-7 after a Cam Williams RBI double in the seventh and a Zubia RBI followed by a Duke Ellis score on a wild pitch in the eighth inning. Donny Diaz relieved Kamron Fields in the Top 9th, but the Tigers were able to add an insurance run courtesy of a throwing error by the Longhorns. Down 9-7 in their final at-bat, Austin Todd delivered a two-out RBI single for Texas to cut the Missouri lead to 9-8. The game ended on a questionable called strikeout on Duke Ellis sealing 9-8 win for the Tigers.

The Longhorns will next host the Arizona Wildcats at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday, March 3rd at 6:30 PM and will be televised on Longhorn Network.

The 9-0 start is no indication of this how average  this team really is.  Just like tonight and this past weekend, against better competition they’ll be a .500 ball club.  I just don’t think this lineup is very good.  There are some good pieces, but not enough
