MySanAntonio.com Texas loses another safety, but gets back RB Daniel Young for Rice

AUSTIN – Texas’ banged-up running back corps is finally getting some relief.

Junior tailback Daniel Young made an unexpectedly speedy recovery from a high ankle sprained suffered in late August. Coach Tom Herman on Thursday said he expects Young to take the field against Rice, though he’s unsure how much work the team will dole out.

Young’s swift return should allow converted freshman linebacker David Gbenda to move back to his natural position. Sophomore Keaontay Ingram and freshman Roschon Johnson will still handle the bulk of the work against the Owls.

“He practiced limited yesterday and went out there today, ran around and looked good,” Herman said. “Obviously he’s a bit rusty so I don’t know how much he’ll play, but we’re assuming he’ll get some reps.

“David Gbenda’s probably really happy about it, I can tell you that. And he had a really good week, did really good. But it is comforting to know at least we’ve got another experienced body back there.”

Herman also delivered some more sobering injury news Thursday night.

Sophomore safety DeMarvion Overshown is dealing with a “stress reaction in a vertebrae in his back” and is considered week-to-week. Overshown was expected to step up and handle more reps in the absence of safety B.J. Foster (hamstring).

“I know that sounds really bad but from what I’ve been told he’s week-to-week,” Herman said. “What that means is it’s inflamed. We’re glad we caught it early.”

Senior wideout Collin Johnson (hamstring) is also considered a game-time decision. He will travel with the team to Houston.
