AUSTIN – There are times Tom Herman has to go talk some sense back into Roschon Johnson.

The quarterback-turned-tailback tends to beat himself up for even the most minuscule mistakes. And that would be fine were Johnson still operating in his original position.

But, in the midst of a sudden and unexpected transition, Herman doesn’t want Johnson brooding.

“He's a really competitive guy, too, so when he makes a mistake he's hard on himself,” the Longhorns’ third-year coach said. “It's like, Ro, you've been playing this position for ten days, we kinda understand you're not going to be perfect.

“But he’s tough. I have no doubt that he will play well, regardless of the competition, just because he's that fierce of a competitor.”

Johnson is suddenly the top backup to sophomore running back Keaontay Ingram. It’s something absolutely no one could have foreseen when Texas opened up fall camp on Aug. 2, but this is the hand Texas has been dealt.

Jordan Whittington will miss four-to-six weeks following surgery to repair a torn adductor muscle. Daniel Young (ankle) and Kirk Johnson (clavicle) remain out.

But Herman said the team won’t change its offensive strategy heading into Saturday’s meeting with sixth-ranked LSU (1-0) at Royal-Memorial Stadium. Adjustments will come only if some injury fells Ingram or Johnson in the midst of the game.

“If both those guys get hurt, it will change the game plan significantly,” Herman said. “They're really good against the run, too, so let's not think they're not. But It will not change the game plan. We're confident in Keaontay, we're confident in Roschon. If something were to go awry in the middle of the game, we would have to change courses midstream.”
