AUSTIN – Texas held its second fall scrimmage Saturday morning. The offense won for a second straight week as second- and third-stringers took on a larger role with scorching temperatures and several key players recovering from injury.

“It was close,” Herman said. “We had too many penalties. We’ve got to get some stuff cleaned up, play the ball better in the air. I think we had two pass interference calls and two or three offsides. But the good news is we have two weeks to do it.”

Some notes and takeaways from Saturday’s battle between Longhorns:

Cornerbacks still battling it out.

Redshirt sophomore Kobe Boyce and sophomore Jalen Green started at cornerback Saturday. Those two, along with sophomores Anthony Cook and D’Shawn Jamison, remain locked in battle for two starting spots.

“You can’t jog four of ‘em out there,” Herman said. “It’s still a battle, probably going to be a battle through next week, I’d imagine.”

Junior quarterback Sam Ehlinger praised Green as a “guy who has a chance to be extremely elite,” a sentiment others have agreed with since spring.

“It’s hard to put guys in that elite level because of who they’re going against, like Collin (Johnson),” Ehlinger said. “But Jalen’s done a great job holding his own. It hasn’t been complete dominance at all.”

No problems with the Kicker and Punter.

Herman still refuses to call the specialists by name, but kicker Cameron Dicker and punter Ryan Bujcevski have both fared well this month.

Dicker especially seems to be locked-in after a freshman campaign in which he hit on 18-of-25 field goals, including a game-winner over Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl.
