And then there was one. One Texas commit remains in the hunt for a state championship crown – Cuero’s Jordan Whittington. QB commit for 2020 Hudson Card and his Lake Travis team were eliminated by Galena Park North Shore.

In other state final games of interest . . . . 

Texas 2020 prospect Landon Jackson (DE, Pleasant Grove) will be in action when the defending state champs take on #5 Cuero and Jordan Whittington. Game time Friday is 11 am.

Class 3A Div 2 #1 Newton had a mild scare last week with East Bernard coming within 7 points of Newton. This week, the pride of the Panhandle, #4 Canadian is the only thing left standing between the Eagles and a state title. Expect Canadian to give Newton a good game.

Grandview vs Malakoff may be the most underrated state final this week. They face off Thursday night at 7 p.m.

#3 Liberty Hill takes on #4 La Vega, a match up that has been anticipated for weeks. Could be one of the most exciting class 4A finals ever.

Class 5A #1 Aledo has mowed down competition all season. This week, however, Fort Bend Marshall might present a more evenly matched game. 

History and tradition meet up against the modern and new when Highland Park takes on #6 Shadow Creek, a school that only recently began varsity football.

CAN #4 Longview break the curse? No state title in Longview since 1937. They’ll have to make it through an upstart West Brook squad to get it done. Next to Lufkin and Rockwall, this will be Longview’s toughest test to date.

In what may be a game for the ages, #5 Duncanville will take on #2 Galena Park North Shore in the Saturday night cap at AT&T. There will be so much D1 talent on the field at the same time, it will be a better game than many of the bowl games set to be played.

JORDAN WHITTINGTON, WR, CUERO – Cuero defeated Silsbee 29-24. Whittington caught five passes for 60 yards. He was also 2 out of 2 passing for 90 yards and had 34 yards rushing. On defense, Whittington had an INT, then had an INT on a 2-pt conversion that he returned for a score.

Mart has a huge advantage with regard to team speed and size. Gruver looked really small standing next to Mart players.

I thought the Newton offensive game plan, especially for the second half with a surprising 21-0 lead due to turnovers, was not wise and almost cost them the game.

Should have been a complete run game, no 4th down attempts; punt, play defense, run clock, rely on defense and field position -- run zero risks of giving any advantage.

So the pass when backed up inside the 10 risked the safety -- did happen and led to giving up 10 points. Momentum Canadian. Newton was not used to playing an NFL-type game of low-risk possession. Give nothing; make the other team earn everything.

They missed #8 Brown and the lanky receiver they had a year ago. I saw an on-screen stat that I can't remember entirely... Canadian has a 47-man roster, and a large number are over 6' and a good number over 200 lbs. The production crew made that point.

Hence Newton could not hold blocks for sweeps, wide angle runs, and so forth. Canadian had strength and length. So if Canadian shadowed Barlow and committed more than one to at least see what he was doing and able to get there in a hurry -- Newton should have had no offense that took time behind the line of scrimmage, meaning wide running lanes. Within 2 seconds it was too late move toward the line of scrimmage.

Canadian was a manly group to deal with and needed no help in crawling back in that game. Which they did.
