Sirhornsalot 14,192
Newton soars past Daingerfield https://www.beaumontenterprise.com/sports/hs/article/Newton-soars-past-Daingerfield-13448850.php Newton dismantled Daingerfield 79-12 behind their explosive offense and an opportunistic defense in the Class 3A Region 3 Division II UIL Regional Finals at Abe Martin Stadium in Lufkin on Thursday night. "They played Newton football," Newton head coach W.T. Johnston said. "They played hard, but they played with a lot of class." Newton had a firm grip on the game soon after the game kicked off because of the Eagles' defense forcing six turnovers. WHAT HAPPENED Newton drove the ball down the field with the ground game on its first possession, but Valdorion Fowler fumbled at Daingerfield's five-yard line. Three plays later, Newton caused a fumble and recovered. Two plays later, Tasmania Brown scored on an end around from eight yards out. Daingerfield had no issue answering back as Jacobe Craver burst through Newton's defense for a 57-yard touchdown. Newton's Josh Foster intercepted a pass and returned it to Daingerfield's three-yard line. Two plays later, Darwin Barlow found the end zone from one-yard out. On Newton's next offensive possession, Brown connected with Dominique Seastrunk on a 48-yard catch and run. Newton's defense forced another Daingerfield fumble, and recovered the ball at the Tigers' 32-yard line. Newton's offense would then score on a Josh Foster quarterback keeper from seven-yards out. Barlow added his second touchdown of the half with another one-yard rush. "He's a different guy," Johnston said about Barlow. "His best days are to come, he hasn't even scratched the surface." Right before the half, Barlow found the end zone for the third time, but this one was on a reception from 39-yards out. Daingerfield muffed the punt on the ensuing kickoff and Newton recovered at Daingerfield's 15-yard line. Three plays later, Barlow found paydirt from 12-yards out. TURNING POINT Newton dominated this game from the opening kickoff. It never looked as if Daingerfield had a chance besides the long touchdown on their first possession. Newton kept their foot on the gas to begin the third quarter. Foster and Brown connected for a 21-yard touchdown. On Newton's second drive of the third quarter, Foster connected with a Barlow on a slant and he did the rest going 53 yards to the end zone. Newton put in their backups, but they continued scoring points. Deanthony Gatson had a three-yard touchdown rush. However, Daingerfield didn't give up and Jacobe Craver broke for a 75-yard touchdown. WHAT STOOD OUT Newton's ability to force turnovers stood out in this game. The Eagles' defensive backs knew where the ball was going, and when they got their hands on the ball it was going the other way. Newton's entire defense brought the pain when they hit their opposition, which caused multiple fumbles. "Tonight our kids were amped up, and it was the readiest that I've seen them all season," Johnston said. BY THE NUMBERS Barlow had 128 rushing on 16 carries. He also had 115 receiving yards and five total touchdowns. Newton' quarterback Foster threw for 162 yards with four total touchdowns. UP NEXT Newton (13-0, 5-0) will face East Bernard (12-1, 6-0) in the State Semifinals next week. Epictetus

Epictetus 845
Fodder for Reading. Off Newton Sports FB Page. And this is a special town. About the time our family moved there, heard about the local barber stopping in middle of a customer to conduct a wedding. He was justice of the peace as well. The Newton County Herald was as fine a weekly wipe as you could hope to obtain. When I moved there it was printed in cold-set type. Lots of memories. Thru the 50s, with just under a thousand population, had 3 car dealerships, a movie theater, hospital, county court house and two drugstores. One with a fountain. So.. now this: People say "Boy, those Newton Eagles are something!" and this is true. They also are fueled like no others. On any given day the Eagle team consumes 5 plus loaves of bread and jars of peanut butter and grape jelly, grape not only is their favorite, IT'S PURPLE, what else would do? Now they have standards that include mixing the peanut butter and jelly together in a huge mixer in the culinary arts class and then spread it onto their preferred brand name bread by class members. On game days each player gets a bag prepared by the culinary arts class that include 2 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches plus other goodies. This requires an increase to around 7 loaves of bread on these days. So, in a normal week there could be as many as 30 loaves of bread with peanut butter and jelly smeared on used to feed the Eagle players. Not all peanut butter and jelly sandwich eaters are equal as some of the lineman might consume upwards of 10 of these energy laced combinations in a day. So next time someone ask what is Newton's secret to winning? Simply answer "Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, baby! Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!" Purple (as in grape jelly) Pride Never Dies!! NOTE: After sending that to my sister, a retired HS teacher at Newton, she sent me this: Now for the real story from several years ago. The cafeteria is allowed to serve certain size servings of food no matter what. …..govt. guidelines. The kids were never full and certainly hungry on game day. Due to that, the coaches sent W. T.'s wife, Debbie, to the store for bread, peanut butter, jelly for sandwiches. The homemaking class that teaches cooking makes the sandwiches. They used to sell for 25 cents apiece. Kids could have however many they could buy. They may be free for now…who knows. As Paul Harvey would say, “Now for the rest of the story." And there you have it. No place but Texas!! I think this is Darwin Barlow. Running on Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches. Sirhornsalot
