ShakaSmart and the Texas Longhorns are back in action tonight at the Frank Erwin Center as they begin the 2018-2019 Basketball season against the Eastern Illinois Panthers. The Panthers, coached by Jay Spoonhour, finished last season 12-19 overall and 4-12 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Sophmore guard Mack Smith was the leading scorer for Eastern Illinois last season, averaging 12.4 points per game. As a freshman,  he set the Panther freshman single game scoring record with 31 points against Tennessee Tech. Junior guard Shareef Smith, Junior forward Rade Kukobat, Sophmore guard Josiah Wallace and Junior forward JaQualis Matlock round out the starters for the Eastern Illinois.

Off the bench, Senior guard Terrell Lewis returns for a 5th season after suffering  a foot injury in early December. Lewis is Eastern Illinois' all-time leader in assists and ranks fourth in career 3-pointers with 20.

Projected starters for the Longhorns:

Sophmore guard Matt Coleman
Junior Guard (transfer) Elijah Long
Sophmore Guard Jase Febres
Senior Forward Dylan Osetkowski
Sophmore Forward Jericho Sims

A note that Senior guard Kerwin Roach will not play tonight as part of a violation of team rules that took place at the end of last season. Roach also sat out for both of the Longhorns' preseason scrimmages.

I'm glad the game turned around. I still don't have much faith in Smart, but I will start the season with guarded optimism. After the last 20 plus years of mediocrity with the Cowboys and the last decade of futility with the football program my fuse is short.

    • Yeah, Sopsher was just a name to throw out and get this train rolling.  I figure he is LSU or Bama bound.  I'm good with the staff turning their attention to 2020.  It just feels slow these days.  I like the early signing period, but it sucks in mid-January.
    • JB, I'm afraid he's right. Football is becoming less popular and has less participation than its had in years. Along the eastern seaboard and even midwest, public schools are cancelling their football programs due to cost and lack of interest. Its alarming. I know its hard to imagine being from Texas, but elsewhere, its reality. This past season I watched a ton of clips from our California recruits. Even the big Mater Dei vs Westlake game was a half-filled stadium, so public interest seems to dropping as well.
    • Point to PD for the clever and humorous GIF. I guess we'll see in time.
    • Daniel is more informed on these things than I, so I defer final word to him. But from what I know, we're not in the ballpark for Sopsher. I think if we even had a foot in the door – it would be dominating this page right now. I wish I were wrong, he's a top player at a need position. From what I've heard, staff is focused on 2020 now and are probably going to wrap up 2019 with the Ira recruitment, a DL recruitment and later grad transfer market (college free agency). But TH is determined not to let eggy get the jump this year. Its working.
    • Ok, getting back on track, are there other 19 prospects the Horns are pursuing besides Ira and Shep?  Another RB perhaps or another Dlineman.  Speaking of Dline, are the Horns actively talking to Sopsher at all or is that a non-starter?
